All I can say is we will defiantely win the OFC title but we will have no chance of beating the 5th place asian team going by that evidence! 1st game though plenty of time to go to those games. But yeah can you imagine what a Korean, Japan, Iraq team would do to Fiji it would be like 10-0 you can say that the Fijians would kick them but they wouldnt even get close to them and there technique and touch would kill Fiji. Thats were we need to improve we cant pass the ball around and dont look comfortable on the ball.

I know what you'r saying, and I agree that the performances need to improve, but I'd like to see Japan go to Luatoka and try and play football on that pitch!!  It looked like Alex Moore (Wembley)

Hey, did NZF actually produce match programmes for the non-event in Auckland (Graham Seatter?...anyone at the tower of power?). I recall purchasing some upsidedown stamps a few years ago which were turned into a tidy sum at a later date.
If there are match programmes then maybe they will have some value in later years.
The Claytons World Cup Game. There might be some value to programme collectors around the world. Maybe NZF should sit on them and then flog them off to the programme king dude from Suffolk, UK in 10 years time. Might cover the losses from the non-event.
I hope Winston Peters is going to fork out the compensation to NZF from his own pocket. These clowns in government should be more accountable for their decisions. Winston v FIFA....the foreign minister is in dream-world if he thinks he weilds more power that the crew in Zurich.

I had no idea we banged in 4 disallowed goals.  The radio commentator wasn't exactly forthcoming with that information...

It was probably Brendon Telfer moonlighting. I didn't hear the radio comentary tonight but I have heard first hand the commentator up at the U20's in Jan/Feb when he set up shop and broadcast live from the ground. I think he had one eye too.....

jeebers canary, you have had too much chocolate! you're posts are electric tonight!

my take on the performance.  rusty, but at least we won.  a fairer result would have been 4-0.  i was however concerned at the lack of pace in our side.  in the first half in particular, there was a real lack of movement in the midfield and only oughton was looking like getting forward beyond the strikers.

thanks to matty and the staff for tonight's fever lounge hospitality!

Yeah, you ask England in the rugger. They are happy to take the win anyway they can and its a lesson for the AB's....learn to pot a few dropgoals every now and then. They focus too much on trying to score tries and forget there are other ways to skin a cat....or get 3 more points:-p
I will have to watch  the replay to make further judgement as I could only get the TV1 website broadcast in a 48mm x 32 odd mm box on the 'puter which made viewing difficult.
I thought we won 1-0 as we had so many goals disallowed, so to win 2-0 was fine. Better than having the campaign buggered after one game.

I tell you what, I'm mighty chuffed with a 2-0 win, the commentator was making it sound (at least when I was listening) like the Fijians were all over us. From what I've heard it is imperative that we improve before we play the Asian team.

A wins a win but for f**k sake it is a sinking group of rugby loving islands. Once the team starts hitting their straps I would be hoping for something closer to 5 or 6 nil.

Unlikely to happen. We aren't playing Samoa or Tuvalu...although I am doing a disservice to the latter as they drew with Tahiti in the SPG, effectively arsing them from the WCQuals.
Take the win, have a beer and bring on the next opponent.

Fiji are piss poor. Its hurting my eyes to watch. Thank god for our lads who have some technical skill, Mulligan's long balls useful, Smeltzy causing problems, but commentator still thinks he plays for Halifax

The Fijian freekick at 1:14:35 (TVNZ website replay) is more than enough evidence for why NZ Football should demand a move into Asia...

Fiji boys obviously sank a bit too much kava before tying their shooting-boots on, lucky for us, but they certainly aren't 'piss poor'. A shame NZ are still relying on crappy long balls. What's the big hurry? And the defence! jeez louise, it's all over the shop. Early days though.

btw, I don't know what's going on but I'm almost certain the Fijian coach is a well known Croatian porn star from the 70s. I'd recognise that ponytail anywhere.

I will take the 2-0 win that is for sure.

But watching some of the game over the internet today, I jsut dont understand. Its like we are a bit nervous and panic on the ball a bit.

I didnt see much off the game, but some parts and wing backs were hoofing the ball out or down the park where they actually had about 2 passing opportunities and only one fijian in the picture.

I guess there was some nerves, but I would like to think that we could have put more passes together and got more shots on goal.

Hopefully we are more convincing against Vanuatu.

Good luck trying to figure out all the supposed offsides. They only had one camera covering the game, and the guy operating it wasn't particularly skilful, so it's impossible to say whether anything was off or not.
The officiating was pretty poor overall, though.

yes, Iraq away will bea tricky fixture.

FIFA and AFC don't allow Iraq to play at home - they play their official home games in Jordan.
Also, I think that Iraq's chances of getting into the top 5 in Asia (their Asian Cup win notwithstanding) are pretty remote.

Given the heat, the pitch (or was it a bobble ball?), and the lack of atmosphere, I think the boys should be satisfied with 2-0.  Like all teams (rugby teams too), nothing beats playing together to generate fluency so hopefully the rest of the qualifiers will see better performances.

Had to laugh as the commentator confidently concluded that Vicelich was offside for the first goal (and ditto for Smeltz's first offside goal).  How anyone could conclude that from the angle of a camera on half way is beyond me.  Perhaps it was based on the fact he was beyond the last defender when he received the ball?

But why would you want to? Average, very average, from us to Fiji to the coverage, the pitch (shocking) and the Officials (probably the pick of the whole game). FIFA and the OFC (and Football NZ) have got a lot of work to do here if they want to lift the profile of football in this part of the world. That wasn't good enough. Disappointed at the standard of play by the All Whites, they had everything going out there from woeful passes and poor options to shocking technique. Looked like they had all been on the piss for a week! I know they are better than this but some of those guys didn't deserve to be wearing our national shirts.

Nah. It was based on the fact the commentator was a pissed off Fijian supporter with no other excuse for poor defending. Vicelich was onside when the ball was knocked back over, although to the match officials it was probably not so obvious, however games are about goals and if there is any doubt they should let it go which they did. I'm surprised the commentator didn't find fault with Smells (of Halifax) cracker at the end!

Up to the individual. I didn't see it as all bad (Smeltz goal, Paston, Lochead etc) so I rated it as average. That perception covered the opposition, who I felt were quite good in patches and outplayed us football wise, the state of the pitch, lack of atmosphere etc. I've seen worse and I've seen better better, so I rated it as average (very average actually). Some others might see it as bad that's fine. I think the general gist of the thread is that the game and the All Whites were disappointing and that we all hope to see a marked improvement next time out. If we'd lost then I would have seen it as bad . And if I'd paid money to go and watch it I would have rated it as disappointing. And if I'd .........

"ordinary" that's what my nephew says.
he also says "book" instead of "cool" because that's the first word that shows up when you type "cool" into your text message.  Took me a while to figure out why all these teenagers were saying "yeah, book" watching Die Hard.
What a "spat", first word that shows up when I type "prat".

I thought Lochhead's play at left back was really encouraging for the weekend game against CCM in terms of tightening up at the back.  He continues to impress me both defensively and offensively.
