Was a disappointing showing by NZ. Yes there defending was poor.
The team started nervously, lots of hesitation, a bit overawed by the occasion by the looks. But the first two goals conceded were terrible defending by us. Ball watching and standing off. Then we never really recovered from that point.
Not sure what was involved in lead up to the tournament. Not having any proper games together as a team wouldn't have helped. And they did look a bit unfamiliar with each other.
In contrast the commentator reeled off a long list of pre tournament games the Chile team has played this year. Qualification tournaments in SA, Friendly tournaments in Europe and more. And that showed.
This is not an excuse. Just a fact. And I know its hard with kids in this age group at school. NZF budget, no OFC qualifying tournament for this group.

I guess that is one of the downfalls of NZ qualifying for every age group world cup, olympics etc. It seems NZF just don't have the budget to spread araound to be sending every age group team overseas for real game pre tournament experience?
