Exciting! Should be cool. Looking at getting wins against Sweden and Brazil- hopefully nick a draw against the North Koreans  We're a tidy side.

He was being sarcastic about hoping to nick a point off the Koreans, after stating we would get wins over Sweden and Brazil.

Buffy... I think it's you who has missed this one.  EG was suggesting that not aiming for all 9 was pessimistic.

New Zealand Football: Junior Ferns start World Cup run-in with Swiss draw

July 6, 2010

AUCKLAND The Junior Football Ferns have shaken off the effects of a long haul flight to Europe and a two goal halftime deficit to draw 2-2 with fellow FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup finalists Switzerland in Zurich on Tuesday morning (NZT).

Renee Leota headed a 65th minute Anna Green free kick past the Swiss keeper to halve the deficit and a Rosie White header levelled the scores nine minutes later with Green again providing the final pass.

The Junior Football Ferns open their World Cup campaign against Sweden in the German city of Bielefeld in just eight days and while satisfied with aspects of the performance against the Swiss, New Zealand coach Tony Readings was demanding more consistency from his side.

For parts of the game we performed to our potential and were following the game plan, and at other times when were in the ascendency we took our foot of the gas and let the Swiss back in the game, Readings said.

Even in the first half there were parts where I think we would have caused Sweden or the other teams in our group, Brazil and North Korea, a lot of problems but the second half was more like the real us. We were on top for a large portion and on the balance of play we were good enough to win.

The Junior Ferns now move to Augsburg in Germany where they take on Japan in a training match on Friday morning (NZT) before shifting to Bielefeld.

ï¿½Im hoping that weve got the rust out of our system and in the training match against Japan we can put that second half performance out there for 90 minutes, Readings added.

Nice to have another World Cup starting straight after THE world cup.

Bit of a shame about our group I reckon - they are all top womens footballing nations. We've got a good team though, so hopefully can go well.

Just when I thought I might get my sleep pattens back to normal... A bit disappointed more games aren't on sky.

Realistically does anyone think we can advance from the group?  As far as I know Sweden would be our best bet for points so tonight is where we really could do with victory.

While it's hard to be sure with underage tournaments (well, even senior tournaments to be fair), we look like we're in by far the hardest group. I'd give us a really good chance if we were in any of the other groups.

I'll give a little rant

Sweden probably our best chance for a win - they do sometimes do well in senior wimmins, but dunno about in age-group stuff.

Democratic Korea are awesome in the underage stuff. They were sublime in the under-17s here a couple of years ago. I'd pick them to top the group.

Brazil we could have a chance against. They weren't that great here a couple of years ago at the under-17 level (we probably would have beat them) - but they had one or two fantastic players and a good record previously at the under-20 level.

Countries like Brazil may have a completely different nucleus of players to their under-17 team here. I dunno. We have quite a few good players from back then, and the last under-20 tournament at this one.

Longo is a great talent for us.

I wish we didn't get such a stinker of a group.

The Swedish defense has looked shaky on a number of those long balls into the box, ironic since that's the route 1 football that the All Whites got good mileage out of as well.

Enjoying the game so far, the Swedish striker looks dangerous but otherwise nothing we can't handle.

Wow.  I genuinely doubt I've ever seen a worse game of football in all my life and that includes the games I see at the local park.  That's not a slight on women's football either, plenty of games at the U-17 Women's World Cup were also better.
