Just me, or is it a bit weird (sharke?) for one of the country's most visible football reporters (he gets some credit for that, although loses most of it for working for stuff) to be making such a broad and daft statement? Or maybe I just don't understand twitter?

Sometimes I think people forget that twitter can be viewed by anybody anywhere. If this was a personal message between friends or accomplices then that is ok. For instance I'm viewing this in the Philippines.

Sadly if we win the first match we’ll be facing yet another Japanese team in the quarter finals in Urawa Red Diamonds, bad luck us

To be honest though, Ive watched a lot of games last year and a few this and it has been shark! The standard is terrible. You'll see better football in the Northern premiership

Andrew is a reporter - not a promoter. He can say whatever the hell he wants.

Just my opinion, and one that I know is widely shared, including among people directly involved in the league. Maybe the language is a bit unpolished, but sometimes you need to say it in a way that cuts through.

I agree. The games I have watched are really fudgeing awful.

On his personal Twitter account or his personal Facebook account, a journalist can be taken to be giving personal opinions.

Completely different to something he writes for a professional publication which has to comply to journalistic standards of fair reporting, balance etc.

However, things like defamation laws apply to anything anyone, journalist or not, publishes on any platform.

But here Andrew is just expressing a strong opinion.

I enjoy reading his journalism and have done since he was the fresh-faced sole sports reporter for Christchurch free weekly publication the Star, where he started his career a few years ago. He always used his position there to promote football in a positive way. Although he was the general sports reporter, it was always evident that football was his real passion.

In my opinion, Auckland City, Team Wellington and Eastern Suburbs look to have some very good players and are playing some entertaining football this season. Southern and Tasman are much improved from last season which strengthens the league.

Waitakere are very average, Canterbury are improving after a bad start with new young signings Pendrigh and de Vries (Kiwis out of the US college soccer system) making a big difference. I haven't seen Hawkes Bay yet. Hamilton just replace the old Southern United as the runt of the litter.

But at least on a neutral venue.

Urawa Red Diamonds squad:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urawa_Red_Diamonds#Current_squad

Only three foreigners, which I guess shows the increasing strength of Japanese football.

Two Brazilians and a former Slovenian international striker.

None of the imports are big names.

Forward Zlatan Ljubijankić got 48 caps for Slovenia but has a modest goal scoring record for club and country.

Urawa have a couple of current and former Japan internationals.

yep, their strength stems mostly from their Japanese players, their only import that really excels is one of the Brazilians (Mauricio Antonio), he’s their best player. The other two are pretty bang average in terms of the squad.

They have a quality defence, watch out for guys like Makino, Endo and Antonio who are some of their best players. Up front they play two usually, Tadanari Lee (formerly of Southampton) and Shinzō Koroki who’s one of the best Asian born attackers in Asia. Needless to say they’re better than us all round, maybe Riera could get in as they have a relatively weak centre midfield, but that didn’t seem to stop us in 2014 :)

Of course it's your opinion, fully entitled to it, fair play... but I just don't understand your point, I don't see the logic in "It's close because its shark"?. Maybe it deserves an article.

Or maybe I just get tired of the cliched "back in the day the quality was so much better", mainly trotted out by ex-pros who take comfort in believing that. Ex-pros and fulltime cynics. Seems like most of twitter falls into one of those categories.

That is correct he can say whatever he likes but he wouldn't be allowed to say in the media that the standard is shark. It would be edited for a start and he would be told to say something like "the standard this year is poor" or some such line.

My point was that on twitter you can say whatever you like which makes it more like personal messages between friends, accomplices etc.

Yes, I wouldn't be allowed to use the word "shark" in print. I also would never try to use the word "shark," so it would never be there to be edited.

Be assured, I will expand on it.

I have watched Auckland City's last five games, and some of the efforts put in by their opponents have been bleak. I'm not sure Enaut Zubikarai (City's keeper) has had more than five saves to make across the 450 minutes.

These bad teams then go away and have 50-50 games against each other, but they're not close because they're both good, they're close because they're both bad.

Can’t wait until people give a shark about the Handy in this country so we can change that. Marketing was great last year but nothing came out of it and it seems like they’ve given up. Not a good look to have continental champions playing in a thousand seater either, but since crowds are dire i guess we have to

Lol. Alternatively you could go to Fiji for the weekend.

Everything looking good. Riera dominating the midfield, both fullbacks getting touches, keeper not tested at all. McCowatt looking a little shaky, probably the weak link so far. Tade and Tavano haven't got the ball much. Not out of our depth whatsoever, though Al Jazira certainly look more skilful we have that cohesion. 12 mins down

Fudge me what a goal. Al Jazira scores a first timer from 30 yards out, it was their first shot of the match too. 1-0

Auckland was playing fine, but they seem to have some trouble to create real chances

True. Still better than Al Jazira, we've had 5 shots (albeit only a few were clear chances) and they've only had one (a speculative long shot that they scored from)

Ten minutes into the second half and we're absolutely all over them. Chance after chance, some beautiful play, give Tribulietx the Halberg award and a knighthood

Edit: 20 minutes in and it's no different. Completely dominant and if we don't score I'll be so miffed but still proud

I think from those 14 shots, only 1 or 2 were actually good ones. ACFC have wasted tons of great chances with sharkty shots

Al Jazira won doing nothing. They took their only chance in the 1st half and then let Auckland do what ever they wanted, waiting at the back. What is the point of having 60% possesion and 20 shots when you can't make anything out of it?

Back to Balmoral for us. Completely dominant, we did everything but score the goal. Everything we did was brilliant except our finishing, and that ended up letting us down. Gotta love Berlanga's comments at the end there, saying he's focused on the next CWC now

Henk Ten Cate knows they got away with a robbery today.  On any other day it could've been 3-1 to Auckland.  Thought all round play and tactics were great, was just that final finish.

Surely Ramon needs to be given a chance with a national team, that was an excellent performance today.
