Waterside Karori, before amalgmation etc was Karori swifts and Wharfies... so yeah the final name are the dates you mention but the history goes way back. The history of the clubs in our community is seriously amazing. I am lucky to have a family who talks about the old days and I love it. This city and the clubs here have been melting pot of immigrant communities when it came to football. It's beautiful.whatever-11456-1 wrote:
Wellington Football has a proud history with most clubs established over 100 years ago. From memory the youngest Club is Tawa, formed in 1971.
correct on when Tawa were formed, but not on most recent clubs in Wellington.
1972 - North Wellington, BNU
1986 - Wellington United
1987 - Waterside Karori
2007 - Wellington Phoenix
2023 - Te Kotahitangi (originally Horowhenua Costal)
Adriatic weren't part of Wellington United at any time.
Wellington United came from Diamonds (1893), they merged with Zealandia (1954, changed name to Wellington United 1964) in 1968 to create Wellington Diamond United.
Hungaria were formed in 1962 and were in the first National League in 1970, after one season they realised they couldn't survive financially so with Miramar Rangers formed a composite club, Wellington City. Hungaria and Miramar stayed as clubs in their own right at lower levels. In 1976 when City got relegated, Miramar pulled out of the arrangement. Hungaria merged with Wellington City in 1979 before merging with Wellington Diamond United in 1985 to create Wellington United (initially called Wellington City Diamond United, but name was shortened).
