So you believe spl players should be renumerated for their efforts also kennedy??

It could be as simple as if they didnt get paid Otago wouldnt have a team worth putting in.. They would have players such as horsehead playing for them and losing 8-0 every game instead of putting up a good fight every week,I dont see any reason these players shouldnt get paid for there hard work

If paid regardless of result there is no emphasis to preform well... players who sat on teh bench all season got the same amount of coin as far as im aware. A baseline sum is fine... but really the majority of the money should be performance based.

6 wins in 55 NZFC games.... honestly who should keep their job after that record?

Otago united had one good seaosn but even that produced only 4 wins from memory

why should this be the case for United and not all sporting team?IE Otago NPC who dont win alot of games either?Credit to Otago Vols because they are a good side but im sure they get a game fee and not a win bonus?

otago united were woeful in yesterdays game against hb united. they had about 5mins in the hole game were they played alright. surely there has to be better players out there in the bottom of the south island. they were lucky for the scoreline to only say 2-0 they looked like scoring twice.Ryzah132009-03-02 14:41:29

Doesn't take a lot of researh to put validity to your claims horsehead.
I was told HB only just beat them which is saying a lot about them Rhyzar. You sound as one-eyed and arrogant as Jonathan's interviews.

lack of roslyn players on the side probably has some correlation
Permalink Permalink
about 17 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
Yes from what I understand they were without 5 1st team players who were either suspended or injured.

Roslyn players - oh yes I think they had the Otago Player of the Year involved towards the start of the season however he chucked it in - maybe that is when the season went pear-shape.....actually no it was well before that.

Terry boylan in 2005/2006 season was best player in the otago team. I'd have Ant hancock over dugdale, easily.

I dont no if you have noticed but it's 09 now horsie..How many goals did Ant Hancock score in the Spl last year?No way i would say Dave Dugdale could go close to Otago United player of the year this year maybe with Tim Horner and Aaron Burgess

This years player of the year front runners are

1.  Sean Brand
2.  Mr. Soccer - the only non Roslyn man in the POY running due to the fact that he is Mr. Soccer.
3.  Ant Hancock
4.  Terry Boylan
5.  Mike Eisenhut (Even though he is in Australia he is a Roslyn man so stands a better chance than anyone else from any other club of getting the award)

Permalink Permalink

I think you will find that T Boylan didn't last the season in 05/06 pulling out half way through Horsiehead.

Brand was given far to much of a go from Phelan if you ask me. The two games I saw where he came on he was woeful.

Dunedin tech are the champions at putting away the sh*t sides but in the spl big games they fall over 2009; roslyn 1 tech 0, cavy 5 tech 2, roslyn 1 tech 1, tech 4 cavy 1.

im lovin this thread. Dont understand any of it or recognise any names but the passion is quality.

Does Barry White (cant remember if that was his real name or not) still play for Cavvie?
Does Tonga Park still ice over for training?
Does University's team van still run out of petrol and does someone (ie me) have to write out a cheque to an Invercargill petrol station to get us back to Dunedin?
Are you still allowed to ring the ground from a pub in the Catlands (bc your van driver took the wrong road to Invercargill) and ask ifthe opposition minds staring an hour late?
Does Bluebird still had out boxes of pasta, patato chips and oher pantry products to team of the month?

for a start, horseshead21 you're deluded, Brand is a terrible player, he had a few runs with Utd & was poor, end of story!
Otago Utd needs a total clear out of the board & coaching staff, its been a shambles for 3 seasons now & it wasn't that great before then. The board must be loving when they're handed their 3 year license, they can sit back & get their salary, i bet you if Marc Chidley was on a commission, things would be a tad better.

Phelo hasn't really adjusted to life in the amateur game & results have reflected this, not sure who would be better? maybe give Steve Fleming a crack, he's always done pretty well with any team he's coached.

Otago Football
Seems like we have a few Southern players in here having a good laugh. Good Rosyln, Tech, Cavy banter - always enjoyable. But also just goes to highlight why Otago United are rubbish season after season. Most of the players in Otago can play in the Southern Premier League thinking they are superstars, scoring hatricks for fun and talking about it at the Cook for 2yrs but ask them to string 10 passes together in an NZFC match and they don't know whether to go for a sh"t or a pi*s. Yes Otago football has a bit of passion and there is a better team spirit than any other team in the league - that is why we are competitive but no player in the otago squad would make the starting line up for Waitak, Auckland, Wellington or maybe even Waikato or Manawatu - maybe Burgess back in his 99 Northern Spirit prime or a young lean scoullar (yes hard to believe). As in most Otago teams no possession = chasing shadows = tired legs = mistakes being made when
technique is flawed. You can't put in what god left out.

Ross McKenzie went to Wellington yes - too get a bit of lunch money for his C+ uni studies but has a heart like a pea and would have a lot of players ahead of him on my team sheet.

I admit Dunedin tech did well to get to the Chatham Cup final - but once again looked like they were just happy to be in final and played awefully against a very average East Coast Bays side. No thanks to the muppet fridge but still didn't show up.

Last year was Tech's best chance since the Roger Brooks glory years to do something in the league and cup. Just didn't quite pull it off, mainly due to inept individual errors costing them at crucial times (similar to Otago must be said) and a inverness muppet on the side line.

In terms of payments at otago - there has always been payment of some sort in the form of travel money, "coaching" by imports etc. I believe it is better for team moral if everyone gets a slice say 100 a win and 50 a game or whatever. It must grate some players nuts when imports (that for the past 7 yrs) have not been any better than the players in the team. When they are picking up 500-700 a week and are of the standard of terry alvino, franco caruso (good lads probably) or a canadian schoolboy 50kg dripping wet with stones in his pockets  - then questions should be asked.  The only decent import Otago have had in recent times was the nutter Lutz Phannestiel (check him out on youtube - hilarious also has NZFC highlights)

Phelan hasn't brought in any decent imports for all his personal contacts and because he has Mark Chidley in his back pocket as well as the board he will be coach again next season for sure.  Steve Fleming seems like he has paid the price for all of Otago having a burning hatred towards his extended family. Rod easily the greatest fleming.

Bit of a rant with no real structure but a few points conveyed. Otago will never have a decent side that can consistently look superior to teams outside the Sth Island. Student player base, booze culture, throwing dave lamont pokey money down the toilet, crap imports etc.

At the end of the day it is not a professional league - the Otago lads train 4 times a week with phelan in their grill because they enjoy football and winning a game every now and again and the Mckenzies of this world should smartin up, get their C+ degree, enjoy their football and stop kidding themselves they are better than they are.

Who is this Mr soccer ?- if it is Cam Parkin- hope all is well picking the splinters out your a@se for the Bay - it must be horrific in your flat with blood everwhere. Although bet you gave shed 2 a good crack this summer.

I await your response  - superstars of the SPL. Mosgiel for the title.

Ryzah13 you sure do have a lot to say for someone who supports/plays for a franchise that has yet to make a play-off.......lets not forget you guys managed just 5 points in 2006....a record, yes....and your team were beaten 9 - 1 by Manuwatu...a record? yes definitely. These things come in swings and roundabouts so maybe you should start a thread yourself on how you guys are going to finally crack those play-offs - as it stands the mighty (self-proclaimed) Hawkes Bay are the only team of the 8 clubs not to make them. So Pot, let us rejoice in this unsuccessful season and remember if your not 1st your last. Kennedy2009-03-03 09:07:58
