I've never seen him ref a game in my life. just linesman for every game in every grade in dunedin.

nice enough guy, but a bit of a muppet linesman - recently in a phoenix game, he flagged for a penalty, everyone played on, he put his flag back down as if nothing happened. that's a common occurrence with besty. that kind of thing happens too often.

also, he's not as bad now, but a few years back, he would be hilarious to watch whenever a goalkeeper took a goal kick - besty would be squatting to check that the ball wasn't outside the six yard box, or moving when it was kicked, or something. as soon as the keeper connected with the ball, he'd bolt upright and sprint down to the half way line.

still, fricken awesome on his part if he's going to the world cup - slaves away for years as a linesman in southern league etc, copping abuse left right and centre (often by way of megaphone...) and now he can say "screw you, i'm going to the world cup!"

funny thing is, if NZ didn't surprise us all and make the Cup themselves, he would likely have been the only NZer getting paid to be at the WC2010...
