Round 1 unbiased team reviews

Mosgiel AFC
Easily the most attractive team to watch this season. Their ability to play out from the back and create chances is second to none. Eder Francini already a strong candidate for player of the season if he keeps up his current form. Supported well by his team-mates and wide array of talent around him. Also notable performances by Cody brook and Morgan Day who have been consistent with their hard work and ability to read the game. We have also seen glances of brilliance and composure from Rahan and Matt Kelly. The highlight for Mosgiel in round was surely the significant, and symbolic victory over Dunedin Tec. Commanding goalkeeping performances from Zane have also not gone un-noticed, and a draw in the last game against league leaders Cavy shows that Mosgiel really do mean business this season. A disappointing 2-2 draw with Green Island, however, has kept them below Cavy in the league. May the good quality of football continue. All the best in Round 2 lads.

Caversham AFC
A close to perfect round 1 for last years champions. Picking up from where they left off last season, Cavy have shown their ability to attain results "week-in week-out". Honorable mentions go to Andy Ridden for a dominating and creative presence in the middle of the park, and experienced defenders Jude and Fergie. You can't deny their quality with the results they are achieving, in game showing the ability to play a passing game like Mosgiel, but also kick it long at the right times as well. It will be a truly interesting battle for the tittle between Cavy and Mosgiel this season. Another big win against Tec showed the quality of young Louis who seems to love scoring against them!

Dunedin Technical
Much maligned with the "route 1" unattractive brand of football, Tec have nevertheless shown that, this perhaps out-dated style of play, can still achieve results. Losses to Cavy and Mosgiel though have been damaging to a side that strives to win the league each year and always has a large proportion of Southern United representatives. We have seen nothing new this year from the top performers of the club, with Joy, Taylor, Ross, and Mcllenan all advertising "the tec way". Will be interesting to see if Tec can get back in the tittle chase in Round 2, especially after a convincing 4-0 dismantling of Green Island in their last game, and a demolishing of Uni. Could this be Tec picking up form and ready to get back into the tittle charge in round 2?

Roslyn AFC
A mixed bag of results for Roslyn has placed Roslyn in joint 4th place with GI after a comprehensive Round 1 of football. Undoubtedly a talented side, Roslyn is yet to hit the ground running in terms of team unity and performances, with standout performances from Attwood and Rupert. Still a side that is taken very seriously and capable of causing an upset, Roslyn will look to climb up the table in Round 2 and beyond it. Tom Stevens also showing his quality between the sticks for Roslyn as their newest signing.

Green Island
"The young pups" of the Dunedin League showing us that they are very much capable of playing good football in patches and have some talented young players to look out for in the future. A 5-1 win over Northern, 4-0 win over Uni, and 2-2 draw with Mosgiel has them sitting joint 4th with Roslyn on 7 points, but slightly ahead of them by goal difference. Kiore has scored and shown his quality and pace, but perhaps also his inconsistency in the last game vs Tec with a missed penalty. Dikstra has made some terrific saves and good distribution. Kirkwood, Mcphail and mchglisnki also look solid, but the team needs to work on their cohesiveness if they wish to compete with the big boys: Cavy, Mosgiel and Tec.

Northern AFC
A dismal and disappointing Round 1 has made Northen a team against which teams have come to expect an easy game. A well fought out 3-2 loss against Cavy and 2-0 win against Uni, however, has placed Northern above Uni in the league. Taylor Quirck and Angus Milne upfront have played tirelessly to make up for their teams poor overall performances. Labelled by some as a "cheap mans Dunedin Tec", Northern will look to capitalize on poor performances by the likes of Uni, Roslyn and Green Island to pick up some more results in Round 2 and avoid relegation (is there relegation this year?).

Uni
Bottom of the league. 1 draw, 6 losses speaks for itself. A team lacking any real character, however with a few talented individuals - Truth, Clark, Webb, but unfortunately the loss of manager Luiz and Rae upfront have proven costly for Uni after a much more successful 2014 campaign. A clear goal-keeper crisis is also a present reality for Hart's men. An exciting 3-3 draw with Roslyn the only positive result for Uni in their first game, but exposed by Tec, Cavy, and GI in the later stages. Uni must surely display much more quality in Round 2 if they wish to climb up the ladder and not finish last.

Final thoughts
In regards to the constant lack of success for Southern United, do you guys think this is due to poor management/player selection or lack of quality in our league? Regards, a concerned citizen.

Can we get review for round two since you did such a good job of the first round?

I would like to see an update also because the first review was very well considered - so long as you don't get on your Tech bashing horse Tippy.  They are a good club with a fine history and they deserve a degree of respect at least.  Others teams in the league haven't done so much other than tippy-tappy-talk-talk.

Score predictions for this weekend? and why?

Mosgiel 4-1 Northern - although in a bit of a struggle mosgiel will undoubtedly still produce results against the bottom sides and will look to regain form with a somewhat comfortable victory.

Green Island 2-1 Roslyn - two close sides although roslyn has deservedly got the better of the islanders in the first two rounds, green island will look to produce a similar defensive effort (considering their position on the ladder) that they have done so this season and finishing scarce chances will be the key to winning this game.

Caversham 8-1 Varsity - although the scarfies got one up on the train in the chatham cup, history will not repeat itself. Coming off the back of a demolishing of mosgiel, look for caversham to be just as ruthless with little resistance from the struggling students.

Is the internet down on the plains or has brookside confiscated the whole of the first teams phones? It's really got boring on here in the last month. One thing this page can count on is that there will be a real spike in data use around April 2016.

Jackson off to Team Wellington for the National League.... Southern United could be in real trouble, where will the goals come from?

As for the weekend:

Mosgiel will creep by Northern 3-1, mainly because "tippy-tappy Northern are tippy-tappy terrible.

Caversham to have another field day against University and win by at least 6.

Green Island and Roslyn will share the spoils 2-2.

People are just worried TK. All the banter from your 6 alias's to being so serious now? From all the dancing and singing after game three to being " undefeated" after the end of the first round.  Now nothing? It's just a game, don't get your head down son.

Hang on JW. Simple stuff isn't it. Plainsmen have made a positive turn around from the last couple of years  and have shown that with a full squad they are as good as any other team. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to come up with a response to half the squad being in and out, starting from Tom Cairns leaving and Regan injured as that nullified any experience and made it difficult for a team with three players over 20. When you add a completely revamped back four, of course a youthful team playing full strength sides was going to battle. Expect them to return to competing ways with a return to Full strength this weekend

Didn't see any prattle on here from Plain Janes about Tech being under strength in the first encounter that Mossie won.

As soon as some teams have players that can't be bothered we get a squeal about them being short handed.

What happened to the post [on here] about the player gains Mossie had at the start of the season Seems when given a run against Cavy last weekend they found out not as good as they thought. Back to playing kids footie for some.

I think everyone just needs to calm the fudge down. At the very least other teams should be happy that teams are improving because it creates a better competition and harder teams to play against. We've only lost 3 games this season and kept 6 clean sheets. That is improvement but when we've failed we've been atrociously bad - for whatever reason - and there's no one to blame but ourselves. This league shouldn't be happy with the same two clubs battling it out each year as it shows a league that's going nowhere - which has ramifications on the standard of the ASB team. We'll see where we end up at the end of the season and judge Mosgiel from there.  But you've got to hope that teams improve or the standards will slip - it'll be like watching La Liga and hoping every now and then someone challenges the top dogs.

Brook, Ali, Kelly, Snell, Bu, Corkhill, Cotter, Anderton some great talent out on the plains, if Mosgiel were to put out an u19 side they would sweep away a combined otago club team with ease. Unfortunately though I have been talking to Riley Bungard (u19) and he told me Hamish Cotter has been getting a little too carried away with the praise being sent his way and is becoming increasingly arrogant, let's hope the old heads like Morgan, Regan and Zane sort him out before he becomes another Josh Dykstra- good player but unbelievably arrogant.

Welcome back Ross- Like you, or one of your Mosgiel friends mentioned earlier in the season, have got the best young talent in Dunedin at Mosgiel. Not to mention Otago's premier RB and CM, jesse and Edder? Mosgiel had 4 players over the age of  25 as well as the perfect mixture of youth. Id actually like to see and average age of the two teams from Saturday? Age is a weak excuse.

Sounds like Southern are up shark creek without a paddle now if Rab's reporting is on point. Eder, Attwood and McCormick joining Jackson on the way out.

Any one know the plans of Seamus? Regan? Morgan? Conner? Batty? Jude?

Players unavailable or absent are problems every squad has to worry about not just Mosgiel and the other riff raff who bring it up every week as an excuse for being humped.

Anyway according to Brookside the depth out on the plains was at an all time high only a month ago "It was a pleasing result,' said Brook,' It gave several fringe players a chance to show what they had, and confirmed my thoughts that we have some decent depth in our squad this year".

You can't have it both ways.

In fairness we have been decimated by injuries, suspension and holidays to a point I haven't seen before but it's no excuse for conceding 10. Great thing about footy is that there's always next week or as Rhys mentioned a fortnight ago, always next season.

Seamus won't, Reagan will if his body permits, Morgan will, and so will Tom, Jude is off to Oz maybe but he might stay - undecided.  I hear this from the Tech lads who I trust.

Franchini I believe.  But Green didn't come down here to play footy - he has a day job and a family.  I think his experience and energy would be good for Southern to tap into even if he's third choice behind Batty and....well let's hear it...young Stevens or young Dykstra?

I wish people would use their real name. Would make things a lot easier. Putting myself up for this one, but I will be disappointed if I don't get a call, (haven't yet). At this stage I'd be happy to play back up and bring what I can to the mix and push Batts hard. Number 3 though... I rate myself better than that. 3 awful games (yes a 10-1 too) doesn't reflect a good season with 7 clean sheets so far. And although I didn't come for football - it's still one of my priorities and want to give it a decent crack down here. So yes and no - will be fudgeed off if no call and we'll see what happens. And again, I'm happy to put myself out there and post with my name - please do the same.

ZG it's ohnoes here.  And on WOW I'm Staburface.  Don't take it personally but if you are not picked as Southern's #2 it doesn't mean you are not the regions #2 or even the #1 on your good days - which is defence dependant and I think there just might be a wee defensive problem there over the Saddle.  If I was Southern's coach I would have a young guy in there as the #2 for development.  Not like we are going to win the comp is it?  And I would have you there as well - not just making up numbers either.
