GRAHAM POLL: William Gallas' challenge on Steven Gerrard WAS a penalty

Why Howard Webb did not award Steven Gerrard a penalty when William Gallas clearly brought him down with a foul tackle in the first half will remain a mystery due to match officials enforced silence.

Whether it was Gerrards previous record of going down a little too easily that sowed doubt in the mind of Englands top-rated referee, or just a poor viewing angle, the correct decision was not made and Liverpool lost a chance to take the lead.

Flashpoint: The ball has gone but Gallas clearly halts Gerrard in his tracks

The reason was certainly not that offered by Gallass colleague Thomas Vermaelen, who claimed it couldnt have been a foul as the ball had travelled too far away from the Liverpool skipper.

If the ball is in play anywhere on the field then a penalty can be given.
