I liked Henderson in that game.
Will be interesting to see how England react when they get put under some sustained pressure from Croatia,France or Belgium.

Yep it's the world cup after all and they are good teams. I'm just pleased we got this far.
extra time coming up
First time in my living memory that England have had a decent goalkeeper.
Peter Shilton
Ray Clemence
David Seaman Gordon Banks.
Croatias problem know will be to try and restrict the number of yellows they get as they had a heap of players who only need one more card to miss the semi.Think England will fancy their chances against either of these two
UK looked ok, bet interesting to see how they go against Croatia on Thursday.

Yes Sweden were disappointing I agree
Great result for Brexit!
(shameless trolling alert)
It's interesting the difference in attitudes to England in New Zealand football vs other sports. Most rugby/cricket fans in NZ tend to not cheer on England vs other sides except Australia, regardless of whether they have been on an OE to the UK or not. Most people form who they support or not in sport before they are 18, though it can develop over time.
With football there is a lot of cheering on England, and also a lot of wanting England to lose, it's quite polarising, but certainly a lot more support for England than they get in New Zealand for other sports.
At the other world cups we generally have our own NZ teams to support. At the football one rarely so. Plus the EPLhas many fans in NZ, so English players often are well known.
Yep dead right... Like Aguero, Vertonghen, Hazard, Alderwereld, Dembele, Pogba, Lloris......

Naming a bunch of players from 30-40 years ago is proving my point. Oh, and David Seaman lol.
I went into the Croatia vs Russia match more wanting Croatia to win, but I was a bit disappointed by them, expected better and ended up being drawn into going for Russia. Heartbreakingly close to saving the Modric penalty.
Well played by Russia, and has been great having the tournament there. They've proved a lot of the negativity around them being hosts wrong.

You must be old. Good on you to learn the internet.

Totally agree. The hysteria in the media and on various football forums/social media outlets prior to this WC was out of control. The sky was falling down apparently/
For all the talk ranging from should countries boycott the WC due to the Salisbury poison incident (who did it anyhow?) through to the fear of Russian hooligans running riot and every other conspiracy theory inbetween, absolutely nothing has happened and it has in fact been a great tournament so far.
But hey they have to keep the 24/7 news cycle ticking over even if that means continually creating "news" and scandal where there is none

Russia are to destabilising western democracies, they got banned from the Olympics for state supported doping. This world cup is a smoke screen to show of how 'nice' they are. I would never trust them. We still can enjoy the football for what it is.
In the last two Russian games it seemed that the Russian players were firing on all cylinders for the whole 120 minutes whilst the opposition teams tired.
So yes a conspiracy theory, were they "Juiced" ?
I wonder who'll be getting a visit from a Mafia associate for losing the game or were they "encouraged" to??

The very same thing could be said for any NATO members holding sports events. How many democracies has the US destabilised for starters... they are currently destroying Venezuela as i type.
Don't even start me on China either.
People carry on as if Russia are the global "bad guys" but look around: who are "good guys"?
I'd love to explain further but this is not the thread for it
I honestly think the Russian players are juiced. The distance and average speed of these no-name players have been consistently better than the world greats. I'm not sure home advantage makes you that superior.
https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/world...
"Russia also have three players inside the top 10 for distance covered, with midfielder Aleksandr Golovin leading the way over the course of the first round of group games with an individual 12.7km covered. To put that into comparison with one of the fittest players at the tournament, Cristiano Ronaldo managed 8.72km in the frantic 3-3 draw with Spain, where Portugal clocked up a total team distance of 102.5km."
The article is from the group stages, but the trends have continued.
Yes, you could argue home advantage. But no way the difference is that stark between the world's best players and people you hadn't even heard of a few weeks ago.
Also, it's Russia and Fifa we're talking about. Why wouldn't Russia juice them if they had the capability? Of course they would.
Bit silly to compare a midfielder to a striker.

I was going to reply by drawing parallels with other superpowers not being any nicer than Russia, but I recall that when I said here that I would not want WPX to be bought by Chinese interests I was accused of anti-Chinese bias. I do not see this as any different.
The moment FIFA awarded the WC2018 to Russia and it went ahead the only sensible view is to say - they ran a pretty good tournament, by all accounts, and kudos to them. And football at this WC has been was good, despite Australia playing worse than ever, which saddened me..
To change the subject. I watched a replay of the England Sweden game last night (I know a sad tragic is me).
I could not help but think that the hype over the performance of Jordan Pickford was somewhat over the top.
Sure the lad did well with three or four good saves. But with one exception, they were saves that I would expect a goalkeeper to make at this level. Especially the one to his left off of a header. Was a comfortable height for a goalie. I reckon most of the keepers at this tournament would have stopped it.

Anything england does gets over hyped mate

Yeah, a bit stupid. But I think the point was "one of football's best athletes vs someone you've never heard of"

Again, I agree, but it's also not the main point of my post. Just a tiny excerpt from a single article.
You never hear of them because they tend to stay in Russia where quotas mean they can earn more money staying at home then going elsewhere.

He did pull off some great saves but on the other hand his distribution was poor: many times he kicked the ball upfield and managed to kick it straight out
A team that does not have the footballing talent will usually compete by trying to be fitter and working harder
I must say that England look very focused and that they are together as a unit.

Article was actually a bit of a nothing really.
CR7 doesn't do the hard yards, saves himself for the glory sprints, so not a good example. < 9km is pretty average. Every England outfielder except McGuire topped 9km v Sweden, with Kane an Trippier topping 10 and Lingard 12 - and that was in a game they comfortably won.
The Russian is just a fit midfielder; distances not too dissimilar to Lingaard, the 15km in his last outing was over 131 minutes on field in a game they were always chasing, not the 96 minutes Lingard did his 12 in.
And some Phoenix reserves do 10km pretty much every game in CentralLeague, so I would expect some A-League players to match that.
It's pretty much racism all of this 'Russians are all juiced' rubbish.
Ok, so New Zealand cricketers were in with the bookies, should we assume New Zealand footballers are in with the bookies???
If New Zealand athletics systematically drugged their athletes, would that mean the New Zealand football team were drugged, or should even be tarnished with that brush???
It's completely unfair.
There is not ONE shred of evidence apart from OMG HE RAN A LOT.
Please guys, just leave it. Accept that Russia performed well, they were a home side, home sides usually overperform, leave it at that.

The keyword here is "systematically". The Russians were running a state-sanctioned doping program. There's nothing racist believing the state could do it again given plenty of motives.
