Interesting view, especially considering the criticism the team and Klinsmann were under not so long ago.

The reality of this team is that the best players are 30 or over (Donovan, Dempsey, Howard, Beasley, Bocanegra, etc), and it's not exactly filled with young talent just waiting to take over.

To me they have a feel of Italy from 2010 (in terms of where the squad is at, not as a direct comparison between the two teams) - a bit too old and jaded to make a serious statement. And given the stiff competition they face in their group, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up with no points out of it all.

Good post, though not sure if i totally agree with all of it (but, i do agree, i also wouldn't be all that shocked to see them end up with no points from the group. Tough WC all the way around).

The criticism of Klinsmann and the team seems like a distant memory at this point, honestly. The WC qualifying campaign erased a lot of it, and Klinsmann had his contract extended through 2018 today.

The team's best player, IMO, is Michael Bradley (AS Roma). He's 26. The best attacker on the team is Jozy Altidore, who admittedly has had a rough go at Sunderland this season, but had a great year internationally. He's 24. Aron Johansson will also be an option up front, he's only 23, has been tearing it up at AZ, and will probably move to a bigger club fairly soon. Altidore and Johansson to go along with Dempsey as options up front could be solid.

Howard is older, sure, but he's in some of the best form of his life with Everton at the moment, so not too worried there. And, if he goes down, we've got Brad Guzan (29), who has been good for Aston Villa this year.

Bocanegra wasn't even really involved in the last bit of the WC qualifying campaign, i don't think. He's been out of the picture for awhile now. Not even mentioned anymore as a possible member of the WC squad.

Donovan will be in the team, but probably will be coming off the bench as a super-sub type, IMO. He'll be hard to replace, no doubt, probably the best USMNT player of all-time.

Beasley is a bit of a concern, but he had some solid performances in qualifying against good competition,  at least. Though, i don't think he'll be starting for the team in Brazil. Steve Cherundolo (captain of Hanover 96, though 34 years old) could be in that spot if his recovery from injury goes well, and he would be an upgrade. Or possibly Timothy Chandler (FC Nurnberg, only 23). Or Geoff Cameron (Stoke). I think the outside back spots will change a bit from what we saw in WC qualifying.

I mean, i absolutely think you're correct in pointing out that some of the old stalwarts will be moving on after this WC, but i think most will hopefully be ready for one more go in Brazil.

Our two best players in qualifying were 26 and 24 years old, which makes me feel a bit better about things. :D

Gonna be a hell of a task, but i'll maintain a bit of faith, i think. :)

Enjoying the discussion, cheers!

Came across this from a few weeks ago. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25134584

oh how England or Holland would want to be in Switerland's spot.

Hey, Blatter is Swiss !!! I don't usually buy into conspiracy theories ...still...
It's crap when an okay but average team like Switzerland end up ranked so high. I'd say the Netherlands would beat them in nine out of ten games if they played a series. (Disclosure - I'm half Dutch)
Really interesting points made in that article about how playing lowly ranked teams affects top ranked teams rankings to their detriment. Explains why the All Whites can't get friendly matches against decent sides - except after World Cup qualification has finished:
"But it is possible to get a much smaller number of points for a win. If the Netherlands were to play one of the teams outside the Fifa top 150 in a friendly match, like Indonesia, they would get only a tiny amount of points - just 139.5 for a win.

Of course it makes no sense for the Netherlands to play a game against a team like Indonesia, as whatever happens it will bring down their average number of Fifa points per game. You would have to be completely mad to do something like that in World Cup year, when the points have the most value.

Unfortunately for the orange hordes of Dutch fans, that is exactly what their team did in June 2013. If they hadn't played that game they would be one of the top seeds, not Switzerland, who played fewer friendlies than most teams in the final 12 months that counted towards World Cup qualifying ranking points.

But the Netherlands are not the only team to make this mistake - on 31 May, Italy played a friendly against San Marino, a team that has only won one game in its history. It earned Italy a paltry 150 Fifa points and of course it brought down their average number of points per game, possibly costing them a top seeding.

If you reassess Fifa's October rankings without using the points gained from friendly matches, then Netherlands leap from eighth to fifth and Italy from ninth to seventh, while Switzerland would fall from seventh to ninth and Uruguay from sixth to 10th."

Newly amended match schedule with seven kick-off times changed since the initial draw to allow for tropical heat:

England Score Already - (Own goals no. 371...)

"He (Roy Hodgson) had wanted to avoid the Amazonian capital altogether, something that infuriated the city's mayor, who initially said England would not be welcome there. ... "I want to meet Hodgson face to face," he said. "He might be uneducated but he is not necessarily a bad person." ... "Italy will have a crowd on their side they never expected, and that includes the mayor of Manaus."

- UK Daily Telegraph

Love the 'not necessarily.'

Hodgson 'heard' about the humid condition from someone. Meanwhile, Jogi Loew already scouted all possible locations last June. Will move into, currently build, vacation apartments, they still can make suggestion what they need for their WC campaign. They are close to airport to avoid travelling time. Professional.

Get building in the jungle EFA! Well, probably not...

Quoted in Private Eye's  "Dumb Britain" column - Quizmaster: "Of which famous British group was Syd Barrett a founder member?"

Contestant: "Ah... Barrett Homes?"

(Well, you gotta know the context.)

Except you had to go into a ballot for this early, or you'd miss out completely.

Arrogant would be if we bought semi and final tickets Leggy. It is realistic if a little optimistic to plan that far ahead but we'll go to those games regardless of whether we make it that far or not. It's a long way to go to just wing it and hope you get tickets/flights/accom.

Ps Leggy consider yourself lucky someone has put time into replying logically to another one of your stupid comments (I don't know why I have). Do us all a favour and think about what you're posting more often. Cheers

Apart from the football, let us know what you think about Brazil. I am interested as it is a place that has never really appealed to me.
