Next they play Bangladesh and Palestine in June, to complete 2nd Round AFC WC qualifying. Socceroos 4W from 4, are already through to the 3rd Round.
2nd placed Palestine (7 pts), most likely to join them ahead of Lebanon (3rd, 2 pts).

Head Coach Tony Vidmar has named his 23-man squad for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024™.

No Nestory Irankunda in the Olyroos squad.
That's ridiculous, he's only gone and missed out to someone like Nishan Velupillay. Jesus wept.
Hopefully they can qualify & end up in NZ's pool at the Olympics. Would add some nice spice.

The rationale behind Nestory Irankunda's omission from the squad
If they've mutually decided that's what's best in the interim/short term then fair play to them on working it out.
Nestory Irankunda had been informally sounded out in the last 24 hours over whether he would be prepared to join the Olyroos squad to replace Marco Tilio, but declined a late approach after deciding that he was better off staying put with Adelaide. [@smh]https://t.co/6MwqWS9Ny0

Guess we won't be seeing the Olyroos at the Olympics after all.
😆😆
Technically they can still get out of the group stages, but their destiny is now no longer in their hands.
Given the tiebreaker rules of the competition (see below) only an Australian win v Qatar, coupled with a Jordan victory against Indonesia will get them into 2nd place in the group behind Qatar, who have already qualified for the knockouts. In this scenario they'll also need to have a better goal difference than Jordan too (both -1 as it stands).
- Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
- Goal difference in all group matches;
- Goals scored in all group matches;
- Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are tied and they met in the last round of the group;
- Disciplinary points (yellow card = 1 point, red card as a result of two yellow cards = 3 points, direct red card = 3 points, yellow card followed by direct red card = 4 points);
- Drawing of lots.
Cue the outpouring on Vidmar

Cue the laughter after that.
Even New Zealand would be disappointed to lose a match against Indonesia at any level. So Australia will be smarting big time after that.
Mind you, it's also good for the AFC that a few other countries are emerging from the wilderness after pouring vast resources into their footballing programmes. Australia comparatively doesn't seem to be doing the same in terms of investment - despite the abundance of setups, talent and the facilities overall. They really could find themselves in a position where they're looking over their shoulders with envy at the competition emerging out of Asia in the next 5-10 years.
Matchday squad - senior caps for their respective National Teams.
🇮🇩 - 194
🇦🇺 - 5
Some of the Indonesian lads already with 20/30/40 senior caps for their country - from Asian and World Cup Qualifiers to the Asian Cup itself. So there is an incredible level of experience in that Indonesian camp. That kind of experience would give even the underdogs (which they were) the confidence to go in and get that result.
Fair play.
276 million people, and a football league that pulls in average crowds about same as the ALM. But their league apparently rife with corruption, as is their whole society.
Their Sth Korean coach Shin Tae-yong sounds like a top operator though, so he could help them finally sort their shark out. Sounds like a team on the improve. Beat Thailand at the Asian Cup, and then recently Vietnam twice in WC 2026 qualifying (incl 3-0 in Hanoi). Their first win over Thailand in 7 years, and their first win in Vietnam in 20 years.
Made the R16 at Asian Cup (lost 4-0 to Socceroos) their first time ever making Asian Cup knockout stages, so yeah a team on the up.

Don’t laugh too loud.
All Whites v Indonesia:
3 wins
5 draws
2 losses
Last game was 1997 when we were sparked 5-0. It was a friendly, but still…
Note sure about age group results.

If we haven't played in the last 5-10 years, then I fail to see the relevance.

Ends an abysmal Olyroos campaign. Unceremoniously dumped out at the group stage with that result.
Au revoir Olyroos. Maybe we'll see you in LA. 👋
Their youth sides scores like our senior mens side.
Their youth sides scores like our senior mens side.
According to a guy I follow on Twitter (I have not verified this number), they had 54 shots over the 3 matches. If that is true, not being able to convert at least one of them is absolutely dire.

Official stats have 53 shots, but only 13 of those were on target.
They made enough chances overall, but there was a lot of half chances and low percentage shots involved in that 53 as well, which probably reflects why only 25% of their shots were on target.
They did have the most shots on target in the group (13) but all other sides had a better percentage on target (and got goals to boot!)
Qatar 10/24 (42%)
Indonesia 11/38 (29%)
Jordan 12/36 (33%)
For reference most A-League teams sit in the 35-40% range on the same metric.
I mean if the Olywhites were at this tourney I doubt - Paulsen, Sims, Surman, LK-H, Sutton, Sheridan, OVH, Stamenic, Garbett, Herdman, Old & Waine would be released by their clubs at the moment. Not with big crucial games around relegation, promotion or (ALM) championships happening. Or players like Sims & Herdman so close to first team debuts (as happened for both on the weekend)
Bindon, Dibley-Dias & Henry Gray probably okay. But you'd end up with a very 2nd string OlyWhites like the team that won last years OFC Olympics qualifying tourney, at Mt Smart.
It hasn't been a good start for Australia in Asian competitions this year 🫤🇦🇺

Perhaps we are beginning to see the emergence of a sleeping giant in Asia. 👀
Unfortunately for Indonesia lose their semi to Uzbekistan 2-0. Japan beat Iraq 2-0 in the other semi. The finalists both qualify for Paris.

3rd/4th playoff between Indonesia & Iraq actually has some meaning. The winner automatically qualifies.
Whilst the loser will playoff against Guinea (CAF) side next week in France, to become the final team in the Olywhites's pool.
Basically 2 dead rubber WC qualifiers against Bangladesh (Dhaka) & Palestine (Perth). Socceroos are already through to the next round of AFC WC qualifying.

Subway Socceroos’ captain, Mat Ryan is one of several players who have been rested for this FIFA men’s international window following a grueling 18-months of both domestic and international football.
Also Arnie, Viking and Stensness may have decided, Gianni is best to stay in Norway. He's just made his first start for Viking, another milestone on the long road back from his ACL injury. Maybe it's just too early yet for an international callup in the rehab timeline. Thailand (training camp)-Dhaka-Perth sounds like a fair amount of travel
Socceroos win 2-0
Socceroos win 2-0
Or am I wrong?
Lasty night against Bangladesh was a qualifier for the 2026 WC.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_eligibility_rules
In September 2020, the 70th edition of the FIFA Congress approved a rule change that now allows players to switch if they have played no more than three competitive matches at senior level prior to them turning 21 including no appearances in FIFA World Cup finals matches or continental finals (e.g. the UEFA European Championship). However, appearing in a tournament qualifier would not prohibit a change of eligibility.[31][32][33][34] Furthermore, players who played for their home country but not at senior level, who were under 21 at the time and have since lived in a new country for five years or more can apply for the right to represent their new place of residence.[35] This also applies to players that began living on the territory before the age of 10 for at least three years.[36]

You would have to play more than 3 World cup qualifiers (or a mix between friendlies and qualifiers etc) to become cap tied.
I believe 1 World Cup match or continental finals (Euros, Copa America, OFC Nations Cup) appearance would cap tie you.
So from my interpretation of the rules, Irankunda would need another 3 friendlies or qualifiers to become cap tied.

Two goals from Kusini Yengi and one each from Adam Taggart, Martin Boyle and Nestory Irankunda sealed the three points in front of 18,261 fans in Perth.
In the 70th minute Nestory Irankunda came on to the pitch for his debut on Australian soil, replacing Boyle who finished on two assists and a goal.
