That's so unfortunate as it looked so blatant.

I'm really surprised the ref cant double check goals, but Brazil didnt deserve to be knocked out by that.

How boring would that be though? Go to celebrate a goal, but have to wait 5mins to check it first. Takes away the pure immediate joy of a goal (ie probably the best thing about football) and turns it into a robotic process.

I'm happy with the odd wrong decision being made, so that we can keep that.

how would using video replays be any different to what actually happened, where the ref spent about 2mins consulting his assistants before awarding the goal? If they're going to take time to consult their officiating team,  they might as well get the right result at the end of it all

that isn't exactly the norm though. 99.999% of the time a goal is called straight away. So do you turn all goals into a boring, robotic process just because the referee took a little time and made wrong decision in 0.001% of goals?

I'd prefer sport to be fun and dramatic, not robotic and boring.

But it still happens. Surely from a refs point of view they would like to be 100% sure of these decisions, especially if they weren't in a position to see it.

I just hate seeing teams knocked out of cup competitions, or tournaments like this (3-6 group games where pretty much every goal makes a difference) because of officiating mistakes. I agree with what you're saying about it shouldn't be robotic and boring, but IMO the outcome football games should be determined by whoever legally puts the ball in the back of the net the most, and not by mistakes like this that could easily be avoided by a simple video replay.

I do always enjoy these debates with you. Because we have clearly differing points of view, but neither of us are wrong. We just place different importances on different aspects of the game.

You get your wish with the A league this season by the looks of it.

Jermaine Jones red card was so soft the referee let him stay on the field for a minute of play afterwards.

So America go through and will likely face Argentina in the semi-finals. Big moment for the history of the sport in America.

Peru face Colombia at midday, with the winner playing in the semi-final against Mexico or Chile. Some great matches coming up!

I was watching that game thinking - hmm, that could be us in about 16 months' time. Better get the lube ready.

Yeah...  might leave the country for those days.  Imagine our PNG side vs that.

Also.  Why have the US brought on one of the mascots at half time?

I find it bizarre with the stats in the Copa America, like the Colombia vs Chile game on at the moment, which is 2-0 to Chile at halftime, yet the stats say Chile have only had 1 shot on goal...this has happened constantly throughout he tournament....that's quite a skill scoring 2 goals with only 1 shot on goal!

Arsenal once lost 1-3 to Barca, no shots on goal. Own goal from corner IIRC

Sweden drew 1–1 with Ireland in the first match of their group without having a shot at goal.

Chile vs Argentina at 12pm on Sunday. Third place match tomorrow at the same time between the USA and Colombia. Not sure who to root for in the final. Who are you guys going for? I think I'll be going for Argentina just cause they face All Blacks-level of media and fan abuse when they don't win stuff that it would be good to shut up most of their media and pricks like Maradona for once. Messi is one of the most coveted players in club football, he really deserves something in international football. He gets so much undue criticism for his performances for Argentina, despite them being nearly always good, because scrubs like Higuain and Palacio (why was he called up again?) couldn't do shark at the 2014 Final. But we all know the criticism even if Argentina wins the Copa America... "Why has Messi not been able to win the World Cup? Not the best player at all"...

If Argentina  are on form then they should win easily, but being a final anything can happen.

Referee doing his best to ruin the final...he is far too emotional and looks out of his depth...needs subbing at halftime.

If Messi had played the ball earlier about 10 times Argentina might have done better.Too greedy.

Feel sorry for Argentina - three major finals lost in 3 consecutive years. You get the feeling that the World Cup 2018 is Messi's last chance to win something with the national team.

Impressive from Chile though - after not having won the Copa America until 2015, they've now won two in a row. Other than the Argies, I think they're the only non-European team with a genuine chance to win the next World Cup.

Chile to defend their crown. Experienced team, used to playing together, but not too old either. Sanchez will be fresh after missing a lot of this season and Vidal will boss the midfield

Messi and Mascherano both retired from international football after their loss

Permalink Permalink

Messi's only 29, it's just an emotional reaction after losing the third major final with the national team in the last three years. He won't miss one (possibly) last opportunity to win the World Cup.

Mascherano on the other hand will be 34 in 2018, he may have had enough.

Apparently Aguero, Higuain, Lavezzi and Biglia as well. Considering the history between Messi and the AFA I don't think it's *just* an emotional reaction

There is a long history of Argentinian players in dispute with the AFA. It's nothing new. Messi will be playing in the 2018 World Cup, unless he suffers a catastrophic injury between now and then.

Another great result for Chile and Sanchez, named player of the tournament.

it's not a dispute with them, right now AFA is a headless chicken. Is all about public opinion pressures.

I hope that Messi reconsiders but he may not.

He's very independently-minded and naturally aloof, apparently something of an enigma even to friends and family.

He's had a difficult relationship with the Argie FA and the Argie people for several years.

This article about Messi from 2011 is interesting:

http://espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=Lionel-...

'...friends and family admitting that Messi is unknowable even to the people closest to him. "When he's not doing so well," close friend Cintia Arellano told the writer, "Leo is a little bit solitary. He retreats. He withdraws into himself. He was like that even with me sometimes. It was like drawing blood from a stone trying to find out what was going on inside."

Having left Argentina aged only 13, it seems he doesn't identify with it, nor it with him.

Messi never sings the national anthem before games and has said it means nothing to him - which only angers many Argentinians.

He is not especially a hero in his home town Rosario - even in a bar owned by his family, there is nothing identified with him and they don't necessarily screen his Barcelona games. The locals have always been indifferent to him.
