as bad as the shank was,  the offside from Higuain equals the pits

And Germany lucky to have 11 on the field.

Bloody good game for a final I thought. Could have been a goal-fest if the chances had been taken. Messi will remember his missed header for the next 4 years. And Higuain that first clear chance. Brill goal by Goetze to give Germans a deserved win. But the Argies will have regrets for sure.

I thought Argentina played slightly better and had better chances. But nothing in it really, so fair enough result.

Cracking final. I thought both teams played with positive intent and the winner was a good goal well taken.

Messi player of the tournament? Hmmm......

Grumpy old bastard alert

Messi scored a great goal and had a few asists but I thought he was anonymous for pretty much the whole tournament. I can't stand Robben but I admit that I thought he was far more stand out.

Happy for the Arsenal players so we now have three World Cup winners. Best team won in the end and I think safe to say the two best teams were in the final.

Ridiculous to give Messi that award because of his name though. No way was he the best player of the tournament and he looked embarrassed going up to get it. Any number of German players should have got it ahead of him. Guys like Schweinsteiger, Muller or Kroos deserved it more, but probably Neuer above all of them. And not to mention the likes of Robben and Rodriguez.

Other than that free kick, Messi had as good a tournament as Rooney. I was actually suprised how a lot of defences managed to keep him under wraps.

Mascherano had a far better tournament than Messi.

Congratulations to Germany ...Argentiina wasted at least 2 great scoring opportunities (another Rm 100 wasted!!).  I'm a Messi fan BUT giving him the Golden Ball award is ridiculous.  Maybe Rodriguez or Muller ...

Messi wasn't even Argenina's best player (Mascherano...)

I'd throw Rodgriquez and Robben higher as well.

When Robben wasn't diving, he played an important role in the Dutch style of play, even defending. I take my hat off to him for that. 100% effort every game. Messi seemed to spend a lot of his game time walking around. We only saw small glimpses of a player whom has an obvious gift but chose not to use it.

Messi is not as fit as Robben.

Enjoyed that, pretty good game for a final and my German mate was apprehensive all the way through, happy to win it but he recognised that Argentina could easily have taken the prize.  George Gregan's four more years rugby taunt would have had it's 24 more years equivalent for Germany if they'd not done it this time.  Consistent performers, close to the top for so many recent World Cups.

Hard to argue they weren't the best team over the tournament.  And also worth recognising they lost two midfielders - immediately before and fairly early during the final.  And the major restructuring of German football it took for them to get where they are.

Is anyone as fit as Robben? I heard he was an absolute beast when it comes to fitness.

Good final.

Argentina got their tactics bang on and had the Germans rattled on many occasions. The Argies closed down space and pressed well. They seemed happy to let the krauts have the wide areas and then defended on mass in the central channels. Mascharano was a beast on defense. He was my man of the match. The Argies screwed it up because they did everything right except take their chances. Higuin wasted that early chance, and later on their striker missed that lob. However the big big disappointment was Messi. He walked around most of the game and only gave a few flashes of his normal brilliance. He missed a clear chance when though on goal.....shot across the keeper but missed by a metre.....Messi circa 2010 would have buried that. He is a shadow of what he was a few years ago.

Ridiculous how Messi got man of the tournament. Robbin, Rodriguez, Mascharano or Neuer were all much much better

You could say the same for the German Team, they had their tactic bang on.
A better fighting spirit and wunderkind Götze made the difference.

One thing I love about football is that 7 of the last 8 World Cup Finalists have been different nations.

Perhaps Ricki Herbert can explain this choice since he was one of the 14 'Technical Study Group' experts who selected the winner.
