Terrible news mate. Luke Fleur was a highly regarded footballer and future national team players. It's true, South Africa does have a crime problem, but Adj has got a job to do and is well paid ( or he would be at Auckland fc). Football is such a short career. To be fair though mate, I think you should ask Boxie and all the Kiwis in the US to cancel their contract and leave the US first before Adj. US has a far, far bigger problem than SA statistically.

Rubbish.

I've travelled alot (about 65 countries), including 3 trips to South Africa. It's easily the country I've felt the most unsafe. Especially the last time, when travelling solo. Colombia maybe 2nd for danger feel.

Hearing gunshots in daytime Durban, turning around to see a black guy sprinting, whilst a white guy is swearing & frantically trying to reload his handgun. Back in Durbs a few years later, my French hostel doom mate, arriving all shaken after seeing a stabbing at an ATM, people trying desperately to keep the female tourist victim alive.

A mate in Cape Town talking about how his business was broken into by an armed gang. All the men including him hog tied, but the young female employees left with their legs untied (a visible statement) - then terrified for the next hour they were going to be raped, whilst the place was ransacked. Thankfully they weren't, in a country with an extremely high rate of HIV.

A woman I met here in Aus, who was the victim of a car jacking in Natal. Driven around for 2 terrifying hours at night, the 2 crims saying they were going to murder her & dump her body. She amazingly staying calm enough to talk them out of it, take them to some ATMs, withdraw some cash, and them eventually letting her go unharmed. They still took the car!

The wealthy/middle class all living behind barbed wire or glass embedded in their high fences. We all know a South African with a violent crime/murder horror story, their own or someone they know. The fact many white South Africans (even women) have a hand gun in their car, purse or home.

It's a beautiful country, with amazing scenery & wildlife. People are generally warm, and welcoming. But as soon as you leave your house in any major urban area, you can't fully relax (especially at night). Always need to be mindful of where you are, and who's around you. That's my experience as a tourist anyway.

For sure the States also has some big crime & gun violence issues - but South Africa............in a different league.
