Just off at 94 mins in a 0-0 draw.

Highlights
Eli two glorious chances to score. On rushing straight at the keeper. Then cleverly creates space for himself and zeroes in on goal only the Hearts keeper to block.

Celtic have 2 games in hand on Hearts and if they win both, would now go ahead of the Edinburgh side.

The first header is okay. Gets it on target with a bit of power and almost gets the spill.

The second is a heartbreaker. Creates that space and if he goes for a chipped finish he scores. Lovely work on the build up.

Currently 3rd on the table and a win would have had them 6 points behind Hearts with Celtic a point behind and with a game in hand.

Just certainly not looking over awed in the SPFL. Great stuff.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/12/20/all-whites-forward-eli-just-pleasantly-surprised-by-season-in-scotland/

New Zealand international Eli Just says his season with Scottish Premiership club Motherwell is exceeding his expectations.

Motherwell have climbed into fourth place on the table after an unbeaten run of nine games. They can gain more ground when they host 10th-placed Dundee on Sunday (NZT).

“I’ve been pleasantly surprised, and I think it exceeded my own expectations of what the season was going to be like,” Just told the BBC.

“But there’s a long way to go and I think the true test will be how we fare over the next few months to really see what the table will end up looking like.”

Just (25) was reunited with his former manager Jens Berthel Askou — they were together at Danish club Horsens — when he moved to Scotland ahead of the Premiership season.

The last time he played for Askou, they were in a relegation battle.

“The situation I was in with the manager last time I worked with him was very different from now.

“Obviously, I spoke to him a lot before I signed. But everything he spoke to me about has come true.”

A first win for Motherwell v Celtic in over 10 years!

Elijah picked off an errant pass from Kasper Schmeichel to help set up the second goal as well - Won't get the assist as his cutback took a big deflection, but by all accounts he was immense once more.

Motherwell are having a very good season and are proving very hard to beat. Seem to have finally found their feet after a run of five successive draws to start the Premiership season.

I grew up in Ngaio reading 6 month old copies of the Hamilton Advertiser shipped from Lanark to my mother. Hamilton Accies were my team of choice. But near neighbours Motherwell were their big brother. I had a soft spot for the other neighbours too - Larkhall Thistle, Cambuslang Rangers and Shotts Bon Accord. Locally only Stop Out could compete.

Match highlights. Eli heavily involved with a number of counter attacking chances.

Geez no joke. He’s rampant there.
Celtic defending…it’s so bad.
Must have had 3 shots on target and run another 2-3 counter attacks, as well as nipping in and getting the ball for the second goal as they tried to beat the press. Shows strength a couple of times as well to shake off defenders or win the ball. Huge game!

Lots of fond memories of Ngaio where my love of football started with Onslow. Was one of the annoying "railway brats"😁

Another top performance from Just as Motherwell win 2-0 against St Mirren and keep another clean sheet. Just grabbing another assist.

Coming top of the fans MOTM poll again also with fans praising his workrate, purposeful pressing and overall quality on the ball.

I hope Bazeley is keeping an eye on him and ensuring we try and play to his strengths. Arguably the form All White currently. Some talk in the BBC match report about interest from elsewhere but he’ll be staying for now.

Motherwell on a great run and could keep running Hearts close given the absolute state of both Old Firm clubs currently.

Classy from Eli.

To think less than 12 mths ago, he was playing for a middling team in the Austrian 2nd tier.

You can see why he was so desperate to leave Horsens 2 years ago and link with Motherwell coach Jens Askou in Sweden. Clearly they have a bromance of sorts going on.

Motherwell 4th are 2 pts off Celtic in 2nd.
3rd in the SPL qualifies for the the Europa League, with 4th & 5th into the UEFA Europa Conference League.

You would think Hearts and Celtic will grab two UCL qualifying spots (1st & 2nd) but Motherwell could overtake Rangers (3rd) and get into the Europa League??

If that happens I reckon Just would be best just to stay at Motherwell, for a 2nd season. Again importantly with Askou he has a coach that seems fit his style beautifully.

He’s going great. Being a little guy thought  the rough and tumble of the Scottish league and the intensity of the fixtures may not best move but he has proved me wrong,

Auckland will rise once more

Pack Count. This is a simple tally of the amount of defenders that a player progress the ball beyond during the game, either via vertical passing or by dribbling. Just does both of those things really well and, as you can see, he was almost double any other player in the match by that measurement...

If he's with a coach that really loves him, and gets the best out of him, maybe stay another season in the SPL. Especially if Motherwell qualify for Europe.

Then when Askou heads off somewhere else (to hopefully a higher level) just follow him there.

He's had 2 years prior to now - barely playing in Denmark, and then languishing in 2nd tier Austria.

Pretty sure the Hibs defender who the Motherwell scorer, fires past is part Kiwi Jack Iredale.

Motherwell stay 4th. Next a Scottish Cup tie verus Ross County.
