That's nonsense. So keepers just stand really close to the near post and leave the rest of the goal completely free?
Jake Gleeson (GK Coach | Saint Mary's College)
more to do with angles, if he had covered his near stick the striker would have had very little to aim at. Only place he was ever scoring was at the near post. Come on thought you were a keeper in a previous life?
There is nothing wrong with his positioning though. There was a small gap at his near post that the striker happened to find (noting he went for power rather than placement). More often than not they wouldn’t. If he moves over so there is no gap, then it opens up the rest of the goal too much.
I still maintain he should have done better. Opinion on the second goal 2ndbest?
Would have been a cricket score if not for these:
Wow that defence is leaking like a Phoenix backline.
I still maintain he should have done better. Opinion on the second goal 2ndbest?
He made a couple of good saves, but as a keeper you just can't make that sort of mistakes, it's like loosing the match, or making it way more difficult to win it. Hope he recovers and gets back to his good perfomance.
Also, he made a mistake just like the one in the second goal against the Solomon Islands in the 3rd place playoff of the 2012 OFC Nations Cup. Not a good sign of his development as a GK. Minute 3:20

Yah that looked pretty average in the highlights. Tough but he does seem to excel at the top corner saves whereas getting down is a little harder for the big man
looking at those highlights from the solomons game.... very poor
miles davis' commentary the stand out

Thought I would relive the honiara nightmare all over t watch the new cale highlights, still disgusting 4 years later!
Gleeson in goal as Portland lose away to Dallas 1-2
http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/05/11/fc-dallas...
Looks like another busy match for Gleeson. He got good praise from commentators with one first half save.
Probably could have done bit better with the 2nd goal conceded from corner.
Glad Hudson left him out of OFC squad. Marinovic has played well in his AW appearances to date, to nail down no 1 spot for the moment.
Gleeson's base salary is US91K. More than I thought

Esp considering Ashley Cole only on $USD300K at LA Glaxy. Stevie G on $USD6M
Another loss for Portland midweek, as New York City (sister club of Man City & Melbourne City) poached a 2-1 win. Pirlo & David Villa (who scored) playing for New York City. You do get some quality (if aged) stars playing in MLS.
Quieter night it looks for Gleeson, but still conceded twice in a game that looks like Portland should have won, based on highlights -

It seems like the total wage bill is highly variable! How is Michael Bradley on the same base as lampard/Gerrard?
Nine/seven years younger. I would much rather Bradley at his peak than mid-late 30s Gerrard and Lampard who struggle to keep up with the pace of MLS.

In the States, alot.
In Europe, none, but who gives a shark about the MLS in Europe any way?
It's dumb that it's like that but that's the way it is

I suppose it's a bit like Kewell in Australia, big name local (ish as he is playing for Toronto) that is maybe just as well known (maybe even more so) than some of the big foreign contingent in the MLS (plus at a good age and domestic player). The guy has probably more caps for the States than the current AWs squad combined.
Edit: Or a Reid/Nelsen in NZ.
Gleeson in goal as Portland beat Vancouver 4-2 at home
http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/05/22/highlight...
Wrong footed by deflection with first goal conceded, and 2nd goal a penalty. They are only highlights he featured, as Timbers appear to have dominated the game easily
Can someone post a clip of him managing to kick the ball over the half way line? As I haven't seen this yet.
I paid special attention to this during the game vs. Vancouver on Monday on ESPN and he kicked the ball over halfway every time from his goal area.
On one occasion he kicked it from his own goal area to the edge of the opposition penalty box. That was some kick.
Looks like Gleeson has been working on his kicking recently.
Another strong all-round game from Jake in the 4-2 win.
Not much he could do about either Vancouver goal - first was a nasty late deflection off the player in front of him, the second a penalty.
Was cool seeing Gleeson in action for Portland and Steven Adams for Oklahoma City in the NBA finals on the same day on ESPN.
Probably the first time in history that Kiwis have featured in two major American leagues on TV on the same day.
Thanks Pete, I am pleased about that, because last time I watched him he couldn't do that which I found staggering for a pro player.
I knew distribution was meant to be important for a keeper, but didn't realise how important it was until I saw him play.
Anyway all power to him. He has obviously improved and hope he kicks on further. How far away is the regular keeper from coming back from injury?
Early July was the last report I saw
Nice. A whole month in that shop window is a good thing.

At least 2 quality saves from Gleeson. Could also agrue he provided the 'assist' for the Timbers goal, as his goal kick (that went well over halfway!), leads to defensive blunder by Chicago defender and goal poach to Portland.
Gleeson put in another good shift as portland win 1-0 with 10 men
Wonder if any lower quality MLS sides would be interested ?

One excellent save at his near post
Wonder if any lower quality MLS sides would be interested ?
i think he's in the running to contest their no.1 keeper when he comes back, the fan feedback certainly suggests it.
was in the mls team of the week http://www.timbers.com/post/2016/06/03/2016-team-week-wk-14-gleeson-ridgewell-and-chara-part-defensive-effort-win and is currently a nominee for save of the week
Have Cameron Knowles, Timbers assistant coach on The Kick Off with Glen Larmer tomorrow talking Jake and Copa. 6:40am TAB Trackside Radio

At least 2 quality saves from Gleeson.
However could have better with goal conceded from corner. Have both him and Marinovic overtaken Moss?
Gleeson continues to be starting keeper. Timbers beat Houston 3-2 at home.

Perhaps should have done better for 1st goal conceded, and let down by his defender with the 2nd goal.
