Joe didnt win the MAC Herman trophy but he's had a great season & now onto more good things for him in the future

Shame but the other guy did pretty amazing as well. Bell had a great season, seems really onto it and hopefully can only go from strength to strength from here. Fingers crossed for big things.

I didn't realize he has dual NZ/UK citizenship.. This is huge as it opens the doors to Europe.

Sounds like he also has his head firmly screwed on his shoulders which helps too.
Good luck to him. Very keen to see what his next move will be even if it's only going back to finish his degree

Will Brexit change that eligibility?

Yes, but 92 league clubs in England, plus there's Scotland.

Then there's a possibility for internationals to apply for work permits some places if they have played in 75% of their country's games in the last 2 years. At least, there used to be rules like that, and there are plenty of non-Europeans playing in Europe.

Think it may have had a minimum game requirement too, so maybe in 15-20 years or so he'll have the 10 appearance required at current rate we play them.

Interesting choice if he does go back there.
Norwegian top flight is a good step up from college football but you do wonder where else he could have ended up that would have been good for his development.
Interestingly Vikings only have 3 foreigners on their books, one guy from Iceland, two Kosovari, one born and raised in Norway and the the other born in Belgium but grew up in Norway and in fact represented them at junior level.

Bell must be highly motivated that Norway is the right place for him so let's get behind him and follow his progress

Might have been told he would be signed as a starter / definite first-team player which may have influenced him.

First team minutes, overplaying in a reserve team for a bigger club?

Based on what we have seen/read about him, no doubt any decision he makes will be well considered and I look forward to seeing how he progresses.

Yep, he was guaranteed a starting role when they approached him (twice) after the U20 World Cup. Always knew he was going to Viking when the college season ended

Exactly.

Everything we read about Bell is that he is an intelligent, smart young man. Whilst the Norwegian 1st tier may not sound that exciting, it is probably an almost gtee of first team minutes that swayed it. I'm sure Vikings will know that they are hopefully just a starting point for Bell's pro career.

Bell probably had a few options, but I note one US pundit with their Mock MLS Super Draft, had Bell going to Beckham's new side Inter Miami FC at no 1 pick. Given MLS will be very keen to have Inter Miami as a success in the Florida market where they have failed before, I imagine lots of visa player concessions for the new club, ie probably allowed to sign more Latino/visa players than existing MLS clubs. So Bell could well have just been a squad/USL feeder player there at best.

"Under the FIFA Regulations, when a player registers as a professional for the first time in a country other than the one where he did his training, the club with which he registers is responsible for paying Training Compensation to every club that contributed to his training, starting from the season of his 12th birthday through the season of his 21st birthday."

FIFA decides how much the compensation is then?

Ferrymead Bays (and Wellington United and potentially others?) would be due US$2000 each, so far as I can tell. Whether they get that is another matter.

There's a formula for working it out. The Phoenix should get some money too.

Good move. Starting in a smaller league where the pressure isn't too high will allow him to grow at his own pace, then he can move onto a bigger club. Really enjoy his play style and look forward to seeing how he goes.

As some of Wood's clubs found out, what's mandated by Fifa doesn't always make its way into their bank accounts.

In all this, remember Joe is going to a small European league. $ will not be big.

As a first step though, playing regularly, in a professional league, where English is not the first language, with a chance of Europa qualification, and presumably the ok to play in the Olympics, is a very very good thing. The levels of discomfort will be exactly the challenge this kid needs and will rise to, I’m sure.

He'll have a few challenges in Stavanger, but the language barrier won't be a major one.

If most of his team mates don't write the English better than Royz for example I'll be shocked.

And yes hopefully he has negotiated a release for the Olympics. August 2020 in Tokyo, will be a bit close to the latter/pointer stages of the Norway football season.

clubs should be hoping to cash in on his big money transfer in 18 months. Clubs will be excited by him based on Olympics and monitor for 6 months and then sign in the next window.

Lock it in.

It'll also be Europa League qualifying time for Viking. And more chance of him being spotted by a bigger club there than at the Olympics.

This guy has Bell as No 1 in his Mock Draft, going to Beckham's new MLS side Inter Miami. But then goes on to say Bell probably has options in Europe, plus he turned down a Generation Adidas contract.

http://www.draftutopia.com/2020mlsmockdraft.html

Neither Virginia midfielder Joe Bell or Virginia forward Daryl Dike signed their Generation Adidas offers on Monday, but if Bell or Dike joins Generation Adidas as a last minute addition, then that will probably be the top pick in the 2020 MLS Super Draft. Bell has duel citizenship in England and New Zealand since he was born in England and played High School in New Zealand. He also played soccer overseas in Germany and Ireland. There are 58 different pro teams in those four countries compared to the 26 teams in Major League Soccer. There is also the possibility that Virginia's duo comes back to school to finish what they started in 2019 when the fall arrives in 2020.

The 6-0 180 lb Joe Bell can line up at left wing, right wing, attacking midfielder, defensive midfielder, left back, center back, or right back with his versatility. Basically Bell is a guy you can plug anywhere at midfielder or defense on the backline. Bell has 7 goals, 4 assists, and 18 points in 2019.

Bell is a fantastic dribbler who can recognize where teammates are with his awareness on both ends. He also mirrors players and does a great job defending. Virginia has 14 shutouts in 2019 and this is largely due to Joe Bell, his leadership, and his relentless work ethic that his teammates at Virginia admire about him.

Inter Miami C.F. already has made some moves on the backline at center back. They have a duo of Roman Torres from the Seattle Sounders MLS Cup teams and A.J. DeLagarza who played with David Beckham on the Los Angeles Galaxy before Beckham became owner of Inter Miami C.F. You also got Grant Lillard for depth at center back. Now you add Joe Bell to this group as your starting defensive midfielder to compliment those veteran center backs along with a future starting center back in Lillard.

He also has Billingsley at no 18, going to Minnesota (2nd page of the link).

Minnesota goes with the best player on the board at 18. The 6-2 180 lb Noah Billingsley helped UC Santa Barbara record 12 shutouts as a center back in 2019.

Interestingly this pundit who got Billingsley correct, had Bell at no 1 pick if he had chosen the MLS.

Summary of Vikings pre season to date (in Norweigan)

I trawled through some Google translation of Norweigan to English which is s fun: someone is the waiter king and someone suffered a bit of damage in the driveway!

Also this...

...We take a brief summary of the training matches so far this winter, and also look at the team lineup for tonight's match. Halfway into the driveway Half of winter training games are completed - six out of twelve. When we look at the accounts, we see that so far there have been three wins, one draw and two losses. Goal Difference: 13-11.

Nine players have been involved in all training matches; Adrian Pereira, Viljar Vevatne, Herman Haugen, Kristoffer Løkberg, Joe Bell, Ylldren Ibrahimaj, Even Østensen, Zymer Bytqi and Tommy Høiland. A total of 27 players have been tested.

TRAINING MATCHES OF THE YEAR:

Viking - Swarovski Tirol (East) 3-1,
La Manga Viking - LASK Linz (East) 0-1,
La Manga Viking - Arendal 1-1,
SR-Bank Arena Viking - Jerv 3-2,
SR-Bank Arena Viking - Stabæk 1-3,
SR-Bank Arena Viking - Chayka (Rus) 5-3, La Quinta

The latest game (1 March)

(Viking - Tromsø 1-1) A wonderful score from Viljar Vevatne sent Viking in the lead, despite having hardly created a goal. But just before the end, the zero also smoked this time.

.... In short It wasn't all over the world to write home about the first 40 minutes of the Marbella Football Center on Sunday night.

Changed ten men Only Viljar Vevatne was from the team that started against Chayka on Friday when the settlement against Tromsø was kicked off. The other ten were replaced, giving the following starting students:

Erik Arnebrott in goal. Sondre Bjørshol, Runar Hove, Viljar Vevatne and Rolf Daniel Vikstøl in defense. In the middle we found Jo Bell as an anchor, and Johnny Furdal and Sebastian Sebulonsen as runners-up. On top: Harald Nilsen Tangen on the right, Even East in the middle and back in dark blue for the first time since 2015: Yann-Erik de Lanlay on the left.

The fact that so many exchanges were made was decided even before the settlement against Chayka, as there was a relatively short time between the two matches.

Game Facts Training Camp, Marebella Football Center, Spain Sunday, March 1 at. 18.00 Viking - Tromsø 1-1 (0-0) Chances: 2-5 Corner: 3-7 Yellow card: Sebastian Sebulonsen

Think the Marebella Football Center (Spain), is where the AWs played Canada in 2018.

A venue option for Bahrain and/or Oman????

Must be plenty of faxes/emails happening at Albany, at the moment.

Tough times ahead in Norway.

No specific word on Viking FK or it's players - I'm guessing it's a nationwide thing in terms of players being stood down or 'laid off', but he's on a three year deal so should be in line for some sort of government assistance.

And from Google - "On 7 May, the Norwegian government allowed the league to start on 16 June with full training starting immediately."

Sounds like Denmark & Sweden are also looking to start up their leagues in June.
