He has a year of study left to complete, but the University of Virignia lets athletes return to finish their scholarship at any stage of their career. He is 99.99% turning pro now.
Given he has three clubs (well, two and the MLS draft) after his services, that he's become an All Whites starter anyway, that he's in line to potentially captain his country at an Olympics, and that he's clearly continued to develop as player, it seems to have worked well for him (*for him* being key).
