There's a former All White from Christchurch still managing a prominent team in North American football:

Aaran Lines has just completed his sixth season coaching Western New York Flash (known until 2011 as Buffalo Flash). He has been hugely successful, winning the US national women's title with them twice and was regular season winner and runner-up in the final last year, W-League (second tier) winner in 2010.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_New_York_Flas...

Aaran won "the Women's Professional Soccer title in 2011 and the Women's Premier Soccer League Elitechampionship in 2012. The Flash reached the inaugural National Women's Soccer League Championship during the 2013 season, but fell to the Portland Thorns FC while searching for their fourth-straight title." They finished seventh in the nine team National Women's Soccer League this year (second season of the league in its latest incarnation - it's been through several different names and formats in recent years)

This would make him the most successful NZ professional club football manager overseas in history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaran_Lines#Coaching_...

"In 2009 Lines accepted a coaching position with the expansion W-League [second tier of US women's national league] franchise Buffalo Flash. Lines led the Buffalo Flash to an impressive 10–3–3 record in their inaugural season and a trip to the second round of the playoffs. In only his second year of coaching in 2010, he led the squad to an undefeated season and a W-League Championship defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3–1 in Santa Clarita, CA. Lines was named the Fieldturf 2010 Coach of the Year after the club's outstanding season. The WNY Flash joined Women’s Professional Soccer as an expansion club in September 2010, directly following their decisive W-League Championship, and Lines led a squad featuring five time FIFA World Player of the Year Marta, Christine Sinclair and young superstar Alex Morgan to the 2011 WPS title. In 2013 the WNY Flash were announced as one of eight franchises selected by US Soccer to compete in the NWSL. Lines lead the Flash with FIFA World Player of the Year Abby Wambach and two time Olympic gold medalist Carli Lloyd to the silverware winning the regular season shield on the last day of the regular season with a record of 9-4-8. In the semi-final playoff game the Flash went on to beat Sky Blue 2-0 and again host a championship game at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester,NY. The Flash lost 2-0 to Alex Morgan's Portland Thorns in front of over 8,000 fans with former Flash star Christine Sinclair scoring the decisive second goal to secure the first NWSL Championship to the Portland Thorns."

It's the ultimate family affair in world football.

This is pretty unique:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_New_York_Flas...

"The franchise is owned by the Sahlen family, who run a meat packing company in Buffalo. Joe Sahlen is the owner. His daughter,Alex Sahlen, is the team President and a defender on the team.Former New Zealand international Aaran Lines, Alex Sahlen's husband, is the head coach and general manager."

Looking at the Football Ferns, they have a lot of players in the top women's leagues around the world now and many uncapped players they can draw on if necessary who play at a good level for US universities, Aussie clubs outside the W-League etc.

I bet that Rosie White (Liverpool) and Laura Merrin (Everton) have lots of fun with their Merseyside rivalry.

In the latest transfers in recent weeks, Betsy Hassett has signed for Werder Bremen from Amazon in Norway, Kirsty Yallop has returned to Sweden, signing for Mallbackens IF on the conclusion of the Aussie W-League at Brisbane Roar, while captain Abby Erceg has returned to her new US club Western New York Flash (coached by former All White Aaron Lines from Christchurch) from a brief spell at AS Elfen Saitama in Japan.

To be fair, it was a british paper that did the story, our media has just reported it.

If the Sun ran an article saying that Tyler Boyd was the hottest football player on the planet with some photos of him wearing his togs taken off his face book account, it would likely be reported here as well.

Thanks for the heads up. Had never heard of her before.

Playing in a decent enough league (though not one of the best in Europe) but for a poor side.

They were hammered 8-0 by my side Charlton Athletic Ladies at home this season, routed 7-0 by Blackburn in the Cup.

Apparently Missen is a midfield enforcer, not shy of "going through" the opposition as the interviewer says.

Interview with Rosie (definite Kiwi accent):

Played in the historic Women's Premier League match against Spurs in February, the first time the Hammers Ladies had ever played at Upton Park. Took until the final months before the stadium is demolished before they were ever allowed to play there. About 1700 showed up (a very good crowd for women's football in Britain). Won 1-0.

They usually play at a small local ground where they're lucky to get a couple of hundred spectators.

Two of Canterbury's Football Ferns have signed with European clubs:

The team Aimee Phillips just signed for in Serbia (Spartak Subotica) have won all 11 league games this season, scoring 72 goals and conceding 0. At one point in October they had three consecutive wins of at least 10-0. Should be fun. #FlyingKiwis

Defender Meikayla Moore (21) has signed with FC Koln in the Frauen Bundesliga to join up with Ferns striker Amber Hearn.

Koln certainly need Moore's defensive skills, having shipped 21 goals in their last three league games to lie perilously close to the relegation spots in the 12 team league:

English women's football - possibly the most confusing worldwide in terms of the names and structure they give their leagues.

So you thought (as I did) that the "English Women's Premier League" would be the top league?

Oh, no, it's way more complicated than that due to the many chops and changes they've had in recent years....

With five Kiwis playing professionally in England, here's an explanation of the structure:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_football_i...

"The national league system in women's football in England is currently operated by The FA, with the Women's Super League at the top. For its first three seasons (2011–2013), the WSL was operated on a licence system with no promotion or relegation, similar to the system used in rugby league's Super League. The WSL replaced the FA Women's Premier League at the top of the system.[27] Its ten teams also compete for the Continental Cup.[28]

Beneath the WSL there are ten teams in WSL2 (women's equivalent of the Championship in men's football)

Beneath that is the Women's Premier League which is divided into six leagues over two divisions: the FA Women's Premier League Northern Division and the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division sits above four Division One leagues. Teams in these two divisions compete in the Premier League Cup.

Below the Premier League are eight regional leagues. Below the regional leagues are the county leagues."

Kiwis Playing Professionally in England:

Amongst those ten teams at the top are Reading and Everton. Reading who have Anna Green in their ranks and Everton who have Olivia Chance. Two kiwis there playing at the top and while there are none in WSL2, the WPL Southern will feature Kiwis Beth Weller (Charlton) and Rosie Missen (West Ham) with Laura Merrin (Fylde Ladies) playing in the WPL North.

For the first time this season, to align with men's profesional football, the WSL started in late September, while the WPL kicked off in August.

January 6: ANNA GREEN – READING & OLIVIA CHANCE – EVERTON (ENGLISH SUPER LEAGUE)

http://theniche-cache.com/football/2018/1/9/flying...

"Slowly but surely we’re getting back into all these things and the English Super League resumed this weekend too. Not much to say for Anna Green who was an unused sub as Reading were beaten 5-2 by first-placed Manchester City. They did pull it back to 2-2 but then Izzy Christiansen scored almost immediately and it didn’t get any closer.

Everton also lost but they did at least give Liv Chance a dozen or so minutes to impress at the end as they pushed for a leveller. Bristol City had taken a 2-0 lead thanks to teenaged forward Lauren Hemp (England’s Young Player of the Year for 2017) but Courtney Sweetman-Kirk could’ve equalised in the middle there and after Georgia Brougham pulled a scrappy one back they gave it a good go at the comeback. Didn’t happen though, Bristol City leapfrogging the Toffess on the ladder instead."

REBEKAH STOTT – MELBOURNE CITY (AUSTRALIAN W-LEAGUE) - playing in two of the world's top women's leagues every year - hugely influential defender for the Aussie champions currently & changing clubs in her US career:

"It’s an international break in most women’s leagues, but you know the FFA feels about international breaks so Melbourne City still played Brisbane Roar on Sunday, the teams cancelling each other out for a 0-0 draw. Enough to keep City fourth for now although Canberra United have a game in hand so it’s a perilous position to be in. Stotty remains one of four players to have played every minute for MCI this season, just continuing to lead the way as usual....

But regarding her parallel career back in the USA in the NWSL, Rebekah Stott’s been traded from Seattle Reign to Sky Blue FC. Half her damn team in Melly City are from the Reign so that’s bound to be a little weird, though Sky Blue won’t exactly be a step back. Neither team made the playoffs last season, Seattle finishing one point ahead, so they were more or less even."
