We absolutely crashed out of the World Cup. We got battered 5-1 when we still had a chance to progress. You could maybe say that was unfair if we had only lost 2-0 or something
Absolute bollocks.
We had a draw and a game where we were leading.
France crashed out because they were expected to compete with Spain and got spanked. Brazil crashed out 7-1 to Germany in that fateful match.

Have the island nations been crashing out of qualifying for years?

Crashing out is being subpar against expectations.

That Belgium team went 2-1 against Spain and battered the higher rated (than us) US 4-1.

We were much more competitive than expected, but no, did not fair well against a top ten team. To nobody’s surprise.

What would have been a not crashing out score against Belgium? 2-0 with 7 % possession?
