Newcastle Jets coach Mark Milligan is backing in-form midfielder Lachlan Bayliss to claim a spot in New Zealand’s FIFA Men’s World Cup squad.
The New Zealand U-23 international has been in impressive form for the Jets, scoring four goals and claiming two assists in his last five men’s A-League games.
“I know the (New Zealand) national team’s paying attention and having a look, and we’ve spoken about this from day one,” Milligan said.
Bayliss (23) is one of a number of young Jets players who are attracting transfer interest from overseas clubs.
“I want them to be ambitious. I want them to have lofty goals for themselves, whether that’s national team or throughout their career down the track.”
Milligan said Bayliss was “putting his best foot forward” for the chance to go to a World Cup.
A-League pundit Daniel McBreen agrees, telling the latest episode of the Total A-Leagues show: “He’s taken the bull by the horns and what a great time with a World Cup coming on, (and) going out of contract. Everyone will perform well then,” he said.
Born in Darwin, Bayliss qualifies to represent both Australia and New Zealand through his father, who was born in New Zealand.
He has committed to New Zealand internationally and has already represented the country at U-23 level, including three appearances during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
