the idea that a south korean kid who lives in south korea and who isn't eligible prima facie would play for nz was enough for me

definitely not born in NZ. Played Onehunga Sports/ Wynrs 12, 13, 14 grade and was in Nike Cup squad 2015

But like, for reals, they'll all play for NZ.

I think some people are forgetting the appeal of playing international football for a smaller (but not so small) country - which is a huge draw card for players.

I agree that he may not currently qualify 100%, but given how long he lived here etc. there may be grounds for a waiver - which might be turned down, or it might be accepted.

Yes, his dad played for the NT, and he is playing for a massive club by Asian standards - but how do we know he's actually good enough? His dad is the coach at the end of the day. Not saying it's a case of nepotism, but let's face it, it's certainly good for the boy to be involved with the first team to gain experience and exposure.

But he may already know what his chances of making the Korean NT are likely to be - and should he come to the dark side, he will certainly have a lot of opportunities to play internationally for New Zealand, which isn't to be sniffed at.

Just applying some context. It's a long shot, but I for one am feeling hopeful.

He doesn't sound like the type of player that the FIFA rule is intended for.

I don't actually mind, as long as we don't get kicked out of a major tournament again, I will be happy. Had this attitude since we started having players playing for New Zealand with the name of Tzimopolous, Van den Broek, Yamamoto (Youth) and Shin (Youth).

Should all be Carruthers, Pearce and Linneker?(Wait that last one sounds a bit Germanic)

Come on- we are a relatively young island nation in a Pacific melting pot with a tonne of people moving around and having different links to our country.

Smeltz for example. Moss for another.

Rojas? Singh? Te Atawhai-Wihongi Hudson?

Names aren't a great indicator of national pride or identity in our case I'd say.

Maori names are uniquely NZ- though they share a Polynesian heritage and Mana for example, might be Hawaiian or Tahitian as much as Kiwi.

But I get what you are saying- we'll take anyone decent who's got a pair of boots. Fair enough.

But your nationality and how you identify is a tricky thing. What does it mean to be Kiwi? Have to trace yourself back to the ANZACs? The NZ company? The first canoes? Maybe having trudged to school (Past Mcdonalds, KFC etc) a few times, done some NCEA, kicked a ball around at lunchtime and had a NZ lager or drunk Mad Jacks or some such one weekend is about as good as any of us...

I think there's been similar cases waived before. The rule was designed to block (mostly) Middle Eastern countries from giving a bunch of Brazilians passports so they could play for the national side. If a young guy spends over 5 years here and gets citizenship and shifts away, then that is the sort of situation the waiver is for. He clearly wasn't brought here to be groomed to play football for the All Whites

Exactly - at the end of the day FAs have the right to apply for dispensations. As long as they do their due diligence before fielding a possibly ineligible player, the worst case scenario is FIFA saying no you can't play him.

His instagram' pretty dead (hjl__09) but his two last football-related posts are nice. Got 3 goals and 3 assists in a 9 goal win, then got 2 goals and an assist in the next game in a 5 goal win. Phwoar.

Lee Ho Jae may well have been at the stadium watching NZ vs. USA in the u-20 World Cup.

It was played at his club's ground in Incheon.

Wonder if it whet his appetite to play for NZ or if he thought "they are so bad, I would be embarrassed to play for them"?

Spoke to a Korean football expert about him. Here's what he had to say:

Hojae is the top scorer of the KFA Youth Cup and is a major force for Incheon Youth, one of the best sides in Korea in terms of U18. I reckon he will be called up this year (probably) and will feature for the Korean Youth National Team Definitely best talent Incheon has produced other than Jeong Wooyeong in Bayern Munich. I see him being called up if he keeps his form up.

Korea has mandatory military service, but I reckon Hojae will choose to represent Korea due to representation in the World Cup and the fact that he's ethnically Korean/lived in Korea for a long time. Koreans in general have STRAYA levels of patriotism... This isn't mentioning Danny Choi went back to ANZ due to failing to adjust to Korean football, but Hojae has adjusted very well and is on a totally different level. He has no reason to represent NZ maybe except if he wants to give it a try.

Unlucky for us, but it seems he's on his way to stardom. Oh well if he flops we'll be here to catch him I guess

Play for NZ and don't go to Military training... I know what one I'd rather do, especially if he sees his football career moving beyond Korea.

Got a scholarship at Korea University - their football team competes in the U-League, South Korea's national university league, and out of 83 teams Korea University's won the title the past two years

University football is massive in South Korea, and it's how the vast majority of players gain pro first-team contracts, whether national or overseas. Has been playing excellently in the U18 league by the sounds of it so seems like the move is deserved

Wonder if he was close with Appiah during his time with Incheon?

yeah so he's been called up to the South Korea U-22 national team in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics - probably time to rein this one in.

Awesome to see someone who was playing for Onehunga like 5 years ago do this well. Add it to the list of Kiwi products doing well for themselves overseas.

Given the mess that’s the Olympics right now, he might change his plans ala Fallon.

Signed a professional contract with Pohang Steelers in the K-League

Subbed on in the 76th minute of Pohang's K-League clash against Gwangju, down 2-1, and scores two goals in the dying minutes to give them a 3-2 win. His first goals of the season in his ninth game, mostly appearing as a late sub.

Came off the bench to play 18mins and score the equaliser vs league leaders Ulsan Hyundai. Pohang stay 3rd with two games remaining. With 56 points and second place Jeonbuk FC on 64 they can’t climb any higher, but their last two games are against 4th and 5th placed Incheon United and Gangwon FC, both of whom can just catch Pohang.

Ho-Jae seems to be going well in the K-League, even if he’s still just a late bench player. Cap him Danny, he might be our best striking option beyond Wood, Waine and Grieve.

If he's playing minutes at that level, he'd definitely be worth a look. Would he want to play for the AWs though? That's another question.

Spent 9 or 10 years of his childhood in NZ and came through at Onehunga Sports, but his dad played for Korea and he’s played at youth level for Korea.

I’m sure he’ll be prioritising playing for SK, but it’s a very competitive environment so there’s a chance he’ll go with us instead, especially with an all but guaranteed spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Ho-Jae seems to be loving life in Pohang this season. 3 goals and 1 assist in 249’ in the KLeague 1, and he grabs a brace in the FA Cup over night.

Still questions about his eligibility but damn would it be nice to have him in the AWs ranks, especially with Wood out for the upcoming friendlies.

Scored 6 goals in 34 (only 9 starts) K League games for Pohang Steelers, to date.
https://us.soccerway.com/players/ho-jae-lee/691439/

K League finishes in December. Pohang are also in the Korea FA Cup semis, plus the ACL. They are 3 wins from 3 games in their ACL group, which also contains Urawa Reds, Wuhan Three Towns and Vietnam's Hà Nội.
https://us.soccerway.com/international/asia/afc-champions-league/2023/group-stage/group-j/g23576/

Ho-Jae still seems uncapped by Sth Korea at any senior or age group level. He's 23 now, so I'm sure he'd consider the AWs an option if he was eligible.

International career
Lee joined the South Korean under-23 national team for the first time in September 2021, when he was invited by manager Hwang Sun-hong to take part in a training camp in Paju.

Personal life
He is the son of former professional footballer and manager
Lee Ki-hyung, who represented South Korea at full international level. He moved to New Zealand in 2007 when his father signed for Auckland City.

I recommend closing the other thread down.

New season underway in Sth Korea.
Ho-Jae Lee, has played 4 games for Pohang Steelers (1 start). No goals.

He got 8 goals (from 37 games) last season in the K League.
Also scored twice in AFC Champions League (ACL).
Pohang lost in the ACL Round of 16, to fellow K League team Jeonbuk Motors. Pohang with some revenge over Jeonbuk Motorsby winning Korean Cup final 4-2

https://us.soccerway.com/players/ho-jae-lee/691439/

Doesn't seem to have been picked for any Sth Korean age group teams??
Soccerway doesn't list any.

Misses eligibility for the Paris Olympics by 2.5 months. Born 14th October 2000.
Cut off date is born on or after 1st January 2001.

If he was eligible (IF), Bazeley could bring him in for the Nations Cup for a look. Cap tie him. Give the Woodsman a rest.

Better prospect than Luka Prelevic - who played the last Nations Cup in 2016 under Huddo!

No idea if he is eligible or wants to play for NZ, but he's playing consistently and scoring, at a higher level than likes of Mata & Greive.

Big unit. Soccerway list him at 192 cm & 84 kg.

Edit - for some context Jeonbuk Motors lost their ACL quarter final to another Korean team Ulsan over 2 legs (agg 2-1). Ulsan this month play Harry Kewell's Yokohama Marinos (Kewell replacing Kevin Muscat as coach) in the ACL semis.

The only ALM team in the ACL group stage Melb City, didn't get out of their pool.
K League had 3 teams all make R16.

K League has 2.5 spots (2 + playoff) in the new AFC Elite Champions League. The ALM has only 1.

The guy is playing at a good level.

A brace against Incheon takes Ho Jae up to 5 goals and 3 assists in 680’ so far this season.

He spent 8 years of his formative childhood in NZ, developed with Onehunga Sports and became a football player here. If Darren Bazeley isn’t on the phone with him, his agent, Lee Ki-hyung and whoever else needs to be in the loop then he needs to do something about that asap.

I don’t think Ho Jae will play for Korea’s senior team, they’re simply too strong, but he would hands down be our second best striker right now, and is a perfect replacement for Wood. Waineo would give him a run for his money but he’s LEVELS above the likes of Mata, Greive etc.

NZF would have to apply for an exemption for him cuz the 5+ years he spent in NZ were before the age of 18.

The question then becomes, does he have to still be playing in NZ when they apply for it?

I think NZF got Deklan Wynne's exemption sorted (after the Olympics disqualification) whilst he was playing in the States.

Probably not interested in the ALM, but would be a great pickup for Auckland FC, esp if classified as a local

You'd think with the looming WC carrot dangling, we'd start seeing people like him getting more and more interested in wearing the fern.

You'd think with the WC looming, that NZF would be proactively dangling the carrot in their faces, and wait for the "hawk tuah"!

Even if he was eligible to represent the All Whites, I'd find it very hard for this to ever become a reality. What we fail to see here is, if he ever decided to take up NZ Citizenship, he would have to give up his Korean citizenship status. As he has not fulfilled his military enlistment duties from what I can see in his TransferMarkt status, he could be considered to be evading his duties. Not only would this jeopardise his playing career in Korea, but potentially his ability to work and live in Korea in general.

That's a fair point raised above.

All this said, do we know if anybody has contacted him? Someone messaging Winston Reid on social media got him into the All Whites back in the day (or so the story went). Could be worth a go. I had a check on instagram and couldn't see a 'blue tick' account so maybe he doesn't have IG or goes by a slightly different name online.
