He's born in England, so I imagine he could still have some family ties over there too. It'll be interesting to see how many of these rumours have any base in reality

After impressing against Peru, Everton, Wolverhampton and Leicester are all said to be vying for his services.

Garbett still has three years to run on his contract with Torino, but he’s already talking about Italy in the past tense.

"I don't know what my future holds, but Torino is there and, ultimately, I've enjoyed my time there at Torino."

Can't help but think all this interest is actually for their u23 team. He's aging out if the Torino youth side and hasn't really been close to making it on the pitch for the first team. And its hard to think a EPL team would be interested in someone who has only made a handful of appearances in the top Swedish Division.

My prediction is that he'll get a youth contract but his dad/agent/pr team will claim it's a 'first team contract and X club will look to incorporate him into the first team squad once he gets settles'. Just like what was claimed when he went to Torino.

Yeah there could be some agent spin. There were some Everton 'rumours' even when he was mostly a bench player at struggling Falkenbergs in Sweden.

But he made the bench for one Serie A Torino game, and he looked really impressive against Peru. So who knows. But I'd prefer he stayed in Italy. Serie B or lower Serie A team loan deal.

Not top level at the moment but as a long suffering West Brom fan I’d take him in a heart beat. I imagine there’s quite a few Championship teams crying out for some creativity in the midfield and Garbett strikes me as tenacious enough to handle the rough and tumble of the English second tier.

I doubt he would sign for anything but a senior team, if he goes.
Let's not forget he's been one of the best players in Italy's top youth division and is a mainstay of the All Whites. Someone's due to take a punt on him.
Unfortunately Serie A is terrible for youth development so unless he gets loaned out to a newly promoted team or a top Serie B one he's probably more likely to be successful (for now) in a continental European league or similar (eg Belgium, Holland or even the Championship)

His name is being bandied about in multiple newspaper articles... so it's a rumour that has legs...

even if these teams weren't looking at him to start with they might be now, going, well who is this kid we are supposedly interested in. Other clubs might also have a little look now too.

Any speculation is surely good speculation.

Think he needs to be playing every week. Not sure if England is the right place, but maybe he wants to go there. But if he’s not playing top flight, needs to be loaned out to a second league level team. Is he better than Singh? Remember Singh was playing 2.Bundesliga this year. But I hope he has created even more chat by the end of the week.

Has he actually been tearing it up in the youth league? I'm curious as I've only seen him play for the AWs so only got that and what i read here.

Are there players stats for that league?

Good luck to him where ever he goes. Hes got a bright future ahead!

Yes he has. I've watched a bunch of games and read the majority of the match reports. He has played 27 games in the youth league and scored 2 goals. 3 games and one goal in the Cup.
Torino finished 12/18 do they didn't have a great season but he's been head and shoulders above most of his team mates. Unfortunately the competition is very strong to get into Serie A so he will be disappointed with a single bench appearance.
It's all up in the air for now. I think he has 3 more years with Torino and with OFC + WC play off he will have a good chance to put himself out there.
There was a recent article that mentioned him as one of the youngsters who might be promoted to the first team next year.
Or Torino might just loan him to Serie B or similar. I think they won't sell him on for a while, especially if he goes to the WC as his price is set to increase and he will still be on fairly low coin so they could make a tidy profit on the player or (hopefully) add him to the first team and actually use him

Happy to see him stay in Italy. Wonder how close he really is, to being a regular in their Serie A, match day squad.

Or would a loan deal to a Serie B club for a season be the next step?
Of course was a stand out for AWs against Peru.

Two of their CMs that played a lot of games have finished their loans, so unless they sign them or sign another CM this window there will be space for Garbett to compete for.

From what I can see last year (12 mths ago nearly), he signed a 2 year contract with an option for a third. But he signed with their U19 team. Presumably this is now a senior team deal.

I can confirm the news. Interestingly it says the Torino head coach holds him in high esteem. From memory he only brought him into the squad for one game last season.
Torino are trying to get Nandez from Cagliari and are apparently looking for a starting CM.
So I'd say they will evaluate Matt during preseason and then decide if he can stay with the first team or go out on loan. Still, fantastic opportunity for him to stamp his mark.

From Flying Kiwis.

Matty Garbett has only been at Torino for a year but that hasn’t prevented them offering him a new long term deal already. Garbett impressed for the Primavera (U19) team last season with 3 goals and 2 assists from 30 appearances (mostly from midfield) and twice worked his way onto the bench for the Serie A squad late in the season. He’s also coming off a few big games for the All Whites and
as has been well established he’s got a very busy agency behind him willing to circulate transfer rumours in a hurry.

Nonetheless there are a couple of curious details here. The main one is that when Garbett joined Torino last August it was reported that he’d signed a four-year deal until the 2024-25 campaign. Meaning that he appears to have signed an extension that’s actually one year shorter than what he was otherwise on, making it no form of extension at all. A contract contraction?

To be fair, the official club announcement didn’t specify a contract length at all and given he was immediately assigned to the U19 team the four year thing might’ve simply been fake news. You don’t really give four year deals to players in an age-capped team, do you? Could be that the extra years were a club option that’s now been triggered, could be it was misreported, could be that he’s simply signed on better terms for one year less. Regardless, any new contract is a fresh commitment so happy days as Garbs tries to earn that Serie A debut.

Torino are in a slippery place at the moment so that opportunity could come relatively quickly. Club captain and star striker Andrea Belotti is leaving on a free transfer after seven seasons and 113 goals in 251 games for the club. Not only is he a key player leaving but they won’t even get a transfer fee with which to reinvest in his replacement. They do at least seem set to cash in on Brazilian defender Gleison Bremer. That helps. They’ve already brought in a few cheap-ish additions already and are a team that tends to feature a number of loan players.

Maybe that helps Garbett sneak up the pecking order... although the most likely next step, given that he’s now too old for the Primavera team, would be a loan deal probably to a Serie B club. A common move for clubs before they loan a bloke out is to give them a new contract so as to reinforce those pathways. Does make you wonder. Sounds like he will get his chance to impress during preseason activities first though.

Up Next: Got some preseason games beginning the week after next

Lets all hope there is a Kiwi Serie A derby this season! They are scheduled to meet early October.

Hopefully neither club prevent Libby or Garbett coming downunder for the Socceroos friendlies. Hay did say that he found the Italian clubs the most tricky to deal with, re player availability.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/129182385/torinos-matt-garbett-aiming-to-be-the-next-all-white-to-play-in-italys-serie-a

“I’m going back as a first team player,” Garbett said. “I’m a full first team squad member. I’m not involved with the Primavera squad this year.

“This year Torino are going to be pushing for European spots so obviously it’s going to be a bit harder to break into that team but it all depends on how I do in pre-season.

“They’ll be taking a look at me and seeing how I go. But who knows what their plan is for me, I might go out on loan for six months and come back.

“I don’t know what I’m going to be doing yet but I’m definitely going back for pre-season when I get back and then we head over to Austria to do some pre-season there.”

Garbett came close to a Serie A debut last season, invited to train with the first team for the final four months of the campaign after impressing for Torino’s under-19 squad.

He made two appearances as an unused substitute for the first team, watching from the sidelines against AC Milan and Lazio.

“When I signed I knew I was going to be going up [to train with the first team] it was just more a matter of time and when the time was right.

“The AC Milan game, I was on the bench in that game first and it was the first time we could fill out the stadium. We were playing at home and we had about 5,000 AC Milan fans and about 25,000 Torino fans, and the atmosphere was unbelievable.

“Walking through the tunnel you’d see the sporting director of AC Milan, Paolo Maldini, you’d see Zlatan Ibrahimovic and all of the big time players.

“The second game was against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and there were about 40,000 people there. You had the slight hope that you might get on but just being involved and warming up was good, you know?

“The coach could easily put 22 in the squad instead of 23 but him involving me just gave me the confidence and I know I impressed him through training.”

Growing up in Wellington, Garbett played countless matches against Cacace when he was at the Ole Football Academy and the Empoli left-back at the Wellington Phoenix Academy.

The All Whites team-mates swapped shirts from their first seasons in Italy and Garbett said it would be awesome if they got to share the pitch together in one of Europe’s top five leagues in the near future.

“I’m tight with him so it’s so good to see him doing well. It’s not often a player comes in just like that into Serie A and starts playing that many games, usually it takes time to settle but he’s gone in and started about 5-6 games.

“He’s setting a pathway for other football players from New Zealand and showing that we can actually do it and play in one of the top leagues.

“I’d love to actually play him. We’ve switched shirts already. He’s given me an Empoli shirt and I’ve given him a Torino shirt, but it would be great to come up against him.”

Garbett recently signed a new contract which
had some confusing aspects to it however seemed to signal his graduation from the Primavera (U19) team to senior football. Likely out on loan first but we’ll see how that goes. He’s at least got the short term to stake his case as he joins Torino in preseason... and he got onto the park at the first time of asking. Subbed on in a 3-1 friendly defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt at around about the 78 minute mark.

He replaced Simone Edera on the right side of a front three. Had a few nice touches, particularly some of his first time passing. Plenty of movement and some strong pressing. Drifting around, getting involved. It was only a dozen or so minutes of a cameo but positive visions there with several more friendlies to get through before their first Coppa Italia match in early August.

From this article it sounds like he has done fairly well in pre-season and featured in two games (I thought it was one). Bodes well for the upcoming season. Also Torino don't seem to be doing too well on the transfer market so they might want to keep him around for depth. Could be a really good opportunity for him

So if he’s now on the outer why didn’t he take up with the three or four   EPL teams that were apparently chasing him as per previous reports on this forum. Or was this some ruse by his management team to try and boost his profile.
