Gdansk may not be that bad after all. Trust that Crocombe has found a leafy pretty part of South London to lay down his head each night.

The Origin of "The Posh"
  • Pat Tirrell's Comment:
  • In 1921, Fletton United's player/manager Pat Tirrell announced he was seeking "posh players for a posh new team". "Posh" in this context simply meant "good" or high-quality.

  • Derogatory Use:
  • The press began using "Posh" in a derogatory way to describe the team, which was a far cry from the original meaning of the word.

  • Adoption by Fans:
  • When the Fletton side later reformed as Peterborough and Fletton United in 1923, the nickname persisted. When a new club, now known as Peterborough United, formed in 1934 after the previous club went bankrupt, the supporters greeted them with chants of "Up The Posh!".

  • From Derogatory to Official
  • A Permanent Moniker:
  • The fans' chanting transformed the term from an insult into a widely accepted nickname that has stayed with the club ever since.

  • The Nickname Today:
  • Today, "The Posh" is a well-known and integral part of the club's identity and tradition.
