Possible proud moment for Declan coming up.

If Rio Ave beat their Bosnian opponent Borac Banja Luka in Europa League Round 2 qualifying, they will play Boyd's Besiktas in the 3rd round qualifying.

Rio Ave with a 2-0 win in Bosnia over Borac Banja Luka. So yes next week in the Europa League, Besiktas v Rio Ave in Turkey.

No Pijnaker in match day squad.

Makes the bench for Rio Ave's first game of the new Portuguese season, at Tondela (where Boyd spent a season on loan).

Some symmetry with Rio Ave playing Besiktas later this week!

1-1 draw. Japanese guy came on for Rio Ave at 86 mins, and scored in stoppage time.

Looks like ahead of Pijnaker for the moment is a regular CB pairing (a Croat & a Brazilian) from last season. Looks like they played 30 odd games together last season, when they finished 5th.

good to see him straight on to the bench.

Not in match day squad as Rio Ave travel to Istanbul (Beşiktaş) in the Europa League.

Only a 7 man bench, whilst looks like Portuguese League has up to 9 on the pine.

Boyd starting for Beşiktaş.

Rio Ave through on pens after ET in Istanbul. 1-1 at end of NT & ET.

Boyd subbed off at 84 mins, with Beşiktaş up 1-0, but Rio Ave equalised a minute later.

They get a big date with AC Milan at home in the play-off next week.

Didn't make match day squad this week for Rio Ave, in Primeira Liga.

They are playing Boyd's old club Vitoria Guimaraes today. 0-0 at HT.

And yes midweek they will be off to Milan, in the Europa League.

Rio Ave are hosting the game. In Europa League this season all qualifiers, including the play-off, are one-off ties, so being at home gives them a better chance at causing an upset. Milan didn't have it easy in the previous qualifying round, won 3-2 against Bodo/Glimt from Norway (who are having a fabulous domestic season btw).

Rio Ave were on the cusp of an upset - leading 2-1 well into extra time stoppage time when they conceded the equaliser from the penalty spot. An epic penalty shootout ensued with AC Milan winning 9-8 after 12 series (Kjaer scored twice for Milan in the shoot out, with the second proving to be the winner).

Pijnaker not in the squad for the game though.

Incredible penalty shootout it was too!

Pijinaker not required in a 0-0 draw.

FYI - Boavista's starting 11, not one Portuguese player. 3 Brazilians plus an Angolan though.

Angel Gomes? English born, Angolan father who played youth level football for Portugal.

Probably a bit of a stretch though. ?

Looks like he got a full 90 for the reserves as they came away with a 2-1 victory against Tirsense in Santo Tirso.

Note that he's listed under the initial starting XI as Nando ?

Tirsense 1 - 2 Rio Ave II

Unused sub in a 3-0 win.

Rio Ave shoot up to 9th. Though plenty of teams below them with a game in hand. Very tight amongst all those lower/middle table sides. Teams 7th to 18th (last) separated by only 5 points.

FYI - Boyd's old Portuguese clubs - Vitoria are 5th & Tondela 13th.

On the bench as Rio Ave (10th) grab a valuable 1-1 draw at league leaders Sporting (35 pts).

FYI Benficia (3rd) & Porto (2nd) play against each later today both on 31 pts.

Unused sub in a 1-2 home loss to Santa Clara (8th)

Rio Ave (12th), and only 2 points above the relegation playoff spot.

Pijnaker now been on the bench 5 times, but yet to get any playing time in Primeira Liga.

On the bench again as Rio Ave (13th) draw 0-0 with Nacional (9th)

Looks like Rio Ave's Guinea-Bissau midfielder Pelé (who was with Reading last season), missed a 96th min pen.

Rio Ave down to 10 men from the 29th min. Was a defender sent off, so chance Pijnaker comes onto the bench next game maybe.

Has still been getting minutes with Rio Ave II over the past couple of weeks.
Full 90 in both 1-0 & 5-0 wins over Berço and Mondinense respectively.

Not in match day squad as Rio Ave (10th) lose 0-2 to Gil Vicente (9th).

RA conceded both goals after a send off at 73 mins. A midfielder so probably won't help Pijnaker's chances of making the next match day squad.

Not in match day squad as Rio Ave (12th) draw 3-3 at Boavista (15th). Rio with a late 93rd min equaliser.

Must have been some afters, with the reserve Rio GK got sent off at 94 mins.

Not in match day squad as Rio Ave (13th) lose 1-0 at Marítimo (16th).
Rio Ave only 2 points above relegation playoff spot (Martimo), with 6 games left.

I guess if they got relegated to 2nd tier, increased chance Pijnaker would get some playing time. But if they stay up, maybe is an opportunity for Pijnaker to get a loan deal to a 2nd tier club. Segunda Liga (Portuguese 2nd division) is where Tyler Boyd started out in Europe after all.

Looks like Rio Ave II (where I think Nando has been playing), will be staying in the 3rd tier (which given it has many regional leagues ain't likely a high standard) next season.

Some exposure at Tokyo likely good for him. From memory his Rio Ave deal is a long 4 year one.
