Good move for him - can establish himself in the Danish second tier at one of the stronger clubs in that league with a good chance of promotion.

As you say, Viborg have been in the Superliga for three of the last four seaons, being relegated only last season.

Their league positions in recent decades:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viborg_FF#Recent_his...

Won the second tier in 2013 and 2015.

Bit of a yo-yo club over the last five seasons.

Were continuously in the top flight 1997 - 2008 (was called the "First Division" until rebranded the "Superliga" in 2006)

By the way, there's no "s" on the end of the name - it's just "Viborg"  - also known as "VFF"

Viborg  is the capital of Midtjylland ("Central") province and that name should ring a bell with Kiwi football supporters as the major club in the province is FC Midtjylland where Winston Reid played his football in Denmark, before what is still the club record transfer to West Ham for €4.26M in 2010.

The most famous product of Viborg's junior academy is current Denmark and Glasgow Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko, born in Viborg, who funnily enough made his senior pro debut as a sub for Winston Reid at FC Midtjylland in 2009.

Being knocked out in the first qualifying round by Sharkhole FC from Lativa is hardly European football?

'Also on the move is Nikko Boxall, brother of All Whites defender Michael, who has completed a switch from Finland’s KuPS to Danish club Viborg FF after a successful trial in November. Viborg play in the second-tier Superliga and Boxall is delighted to have joined them.

“I’ve been waiting for a while and now I’m just glad that everything has fallen into place,” he said. “I’m very proud and excited to get started and am looking forward to pulling my shirt over my head. We have an important half season ahead of us and the club’s ambitions fit me well. I will do everything I can to help the team back to where Viborg belongs.”'

Hasn't been updated much, but making good strides in Denmark.

Since arriving at Viborg, he's played every minute (5 games) they've won four and drawn one, and haven't conceded in the last four league matches. As a result they've shot right into contention for promotion to the Danish Superliga.

Still going good guns over in Denmark - 8 games and full 90 minute showings since the move from Finland, and has helped Viborg pick up 19 of the past 24 points up for grabs.

Had a bit of a slip up just over a week ago against Fremad Amager where Viborg were quietly thumped 3-0, but since then have had a 2-0 win over Frederica and a 3-0 win over Thisted.

Currently sit 3rd in the race for promotion, and after their next game against strugglers Nykøbing, they face the other four sides, back to back who are also in the race for promotion - Vejle 29/04 (4th), Vendsyssel 06/05 (2nd), Esbjerg 13/05 (1st) & HB Køge 17/05 (5th).

Viborg had an important 3-1 away win over promotion rivals Vendsyssel.

Viborg are currently 3rd, sitting in the last promotion playoff spot. They are 2 pts ahead of Vendsyssel (4th) with 3 regular season games to go.

Regular season finishes 20th May, then playoff games if Viborg finish in top 3.

Any playoff games may overlap AWs tourney in India. So Boxall’s AWs availability will be uncertain for next few weeks.

Big game for Viborg & Boxall tomorrow against Brabrand at home.

Viborg (53 pts GD +16) are currently very narrowly third on the table, just ahead of Vendsyssel (53 pts GD +15), by virtual of +1 GD!! Third & second on the table go into the promotion playoffs.

Brabrand are battling to avoid relegation, so unfortunately still have plenty to play for.

Vendsyssel travel to Fredericia who are mid table with nothing to play for.

Big couple of games.

Promotion playoff games if Viborg make it, may overlap AWs tourney in India.

Always drama on the last day of a regular season.

No playoffs or promotion for Viborg and Boxall. They could only manage a 3-3 draw, whilst Vendsyssel got a 3-1 win away.

Viborg conceded 3rd goal at 90 mins, so would have been a pretty despondent dressing room. Despite that late goal Brabrand were still relegated.

Danish leagues restart late July. Note Boxall's deal with Viborg was 2.5 years, so expires summer 2020.

Season kicks off in the Danish 1st Division. Good to see Nikko remaining an ever present in the Viborg lineup as they look to kick on from the disappointment of missing promotion last season. Viborg are at home to Nykøbing.

Good preseason for Viborg too, beating Superliga sides Aalborg BK (3-2), Hobro IK (3-1) as well as the relegated Silkeborg IF (3-0)

After a slow start to the season, Viborg pick up their first win of the Danish 1st Division with a 2-0 over Fremad Amager.

Nikko returned to the starting XI after being sent off (two yellows) in his sides loss to table topping HB Køge a couple of weeks ago.

Picked this up from Viborg FF twitter feed, Nikko (#5) looking happy as anything!

Scores his first goal for Viborg to put them 2-0 up after 15.

Fredericia have since pulled a goal back; 2-1 Viborg after half an hour.

Viborg finding the type of form over the last couple of weeks that had them towards the top end of the 1st Division last season. Here's hoping it continues.

Early days (still two thirds of the season to go) but these 2 teams look like being in a dog fight, for winning the league and getting the sole automatic promotion spot.

90 mins and a yellow for Boxall.

Viborg still head into the long 3 month Danish winter break, 4 points clear at the top of the table.

I guess Boxall junior will fit in a Xmas trip to NZ over the break. Keep his fitness up training with his big bro, who will similarly be avoiding the snow in Minnesota.

Viborg win at Hvidore 1-0.

Boxall 90 mins.

Silkeborg also won, so keep their one point lead with one round to go.

Both teams finish with home games. Viborg having the tougher game against 3rd placed Fremad Amager, who are gunning for the 2nd promotion playoff spot.

Silkeborg play mid table Nykøbing, who have nothing to play for.

So looks likely Viborg will go into promotion playoffs (2nd spot is at least guaranteed no matter what happens in last round) rather than automatic promotion.
