Kiwi Players Elsewhere

Other Kiwis in European lower leagues

Agree with both - as mentioned elsewhere, Serie C can be totally shark (average players, shambolic owners and clubs going bankrupt right left and center), but it's still the third tier in Italy. Lots of ageing pros, youngsters on loan and just all-round good players who for a reason or another haven't been able to reach the upper echelons, ply their trade there and the level can be very good.

If he plays regularly there, he will definitely develop quickly - having seen him play only a handful of times, it is hard to predict how far he will go. He certainly has good genes and isn't afraid to work hard...let's see how he goes.

I'll definitely be following his progress up close, especially while he is in Italy.

Another 90' for Niko Kirwan, in AC Mestre's 1-1 draw at home with Gubbio.

According to this, he played as LB in a 4-4-2 formation. In their last game, he was deployed as a CD in a 3-5-2, so it seems he is playing mainly at the back (used to be a CM with TeeDubs IIRC) and is showing he is fit and versatile.

Mestre now have 5 points from 3 games.

Bad day for Niko Kirwan on the weekend who gave away an 86' penalty to give Fermana a golden chance to break the deadlock.

Fermana scored and won the match 1-0, with Kirwan subbed off on the 90' mark.

Hopefully Niko bounces back and maintains his spot in the starting XI next week.

You joking right? We had a thread for Marinovic who was playing in the depths of German football for a long time, this is the third tier of Italian football, I would go as far as saying that some of the better Serie C club could take down middle of the table A-League clubs any day..

Can't find a thread for him, but former All White Liam Graham has joined Auckland City after leaving League One's Chesterfield.

Wish him well. I enjoyed watching him for Suburbs in national league last season, and Springs in the winter. I felt he was worthy of an All Whites look in on that form, considering some picked who were not playing as well.

Niko Kirwan retained his place in the AC Mestre starting line up after giving away a pen in the dying minutes of the game last week.

Interestingly, he was employed as a LM in a 4-3-3 (he has been deployed as CB and LB already this season).

Niko played 75' and then came off.

Late pen heartbreak was reversed this week with Mestre awarded a pen in the 94' and scoring the 2-1 with the last kick of the game to win it.

Actually he didn't start, he came ON in the 74th minute..

You know - you're right!

I did wonder that but the graphics got me. He is shown in the starting line up here and has a green arrow pointing out...which obviously means came on, but looks like what you would normally use for subbed off.

So I stand corrected, he lost his place in the starting line up - and was moved out of defense.

Also found some highlights of the game - Mestre's first goal was a real peach.

And you can see Niko celebrate the winning goal.

Anyone playing at a level where five subs are allowed shouldn't have their own thread tbh

They just changed the rules this season as an experiment.

It's still the third league (and fully professional, unlike where some current AWs ply their trade currently) of a fairly large European country called Italy. You might have heard of them doing OK in the WC once or twice and not doing too badly in Europe either.

3rd tier in Italy is split regionally I think. As such, I reckon this is the right thread at this stage.

And almost beat New Zealand once.

So Steven Old plays 4th tier football and he has his own thread. Niko shouldn't because he is playing 3rd tier which is split into regions?

Why are there arbitrary rules for what players get their own threads? If someone wants to create and maintain a thread for an overseas player, who cares?

Two promotions and Kirwan's defending against Higuain and Dybala. One and he's playing against legendary teams such as Palermo, Parma, Empoli and Perugia. Already a regular in the same division as Vicenza, the old club of Jesse Edge and Liam Graham (who both never got a shout with the club), and the same league as Parma last year.

Not a bad level at all, especially considering that it's fully professional and at a higher level than some of the national team.

The continuing international adventures of Chris James:

http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/newsarticle/60038

"Chris James has joined newly-promoted Finnish second-tier outfit Kotkan Tyovaen Palloilijat. It is the latest chapter in a nomadic career for the midfielder, who played in England, Finland, Australia, France and America before a brief spell in New Zealand with Eastern Suburbs this season. He has not taken long to make an impact in his new surroundings, finding the net on his debut in a 6-1 win over PEPO Lappeenranta. The 30-year-old got on the end of a flowing team move to clinically smash home from the edge of the area."

Moses Dyer has signed for Floro in the Norwegian second tier.

Probably deserves his own thread here in Kiwis Overseas.

Mods: move his existing thread from the "Handy Prem" section here:

Moses Dyer signed for Floro on level 2 in Norway. Bottom team per now, finished mid table last season. The difficult second season for a promoted team.
