It's a real shame, obviously form wasn't great but Nelsen was doing a pretty decent job in comparison with former coaches. It sounds like it is the GM who should of got the boot if anyone was going to get sacked.
Ryan Nelsen (Unattached FC Coach)

I agree, but the thing is that TFC actually stands for "They Fire Coaches". Nelsen, I think, has actually been the longest serving coach we've had. One guy got only 10 games!
Not a surprise; only surprise is that it took this long to crap the bed again.

Ha! Ha! The ownership and the General Manager sound a right bunch of tossers. They're signing their own death warrant because now no decent coaches will want to work with them if they even whimsically sack successful ones - and I imagine the fans will be staying away in droves, especially if this new sucker they've appointed, the Academy coach Vanney proves unsuccessful.
Man, this Vanney seems a bit of a back-stabber (maybe he was hustling the club management for the job) and what a sophisticated modern coaching strategy he has:
'The 40-year-old Vanney vowed the biggest change under his tenure would be immediately clear.
“I think we need to change the energy, be more aggressive, be potentially less careful about making mistakes and looking to be more aggressive.
“Over the last several games, we’ve looked energy-less. I think our team is at its best when we’re out and we’re sprinting and we’re running and we’re getting after other teams.”
Must supply his own brown bags.
With the players Toronto had, expectations will be high and I don't think Nelsen met them. Their form was very patchy. Nelsen did well enough to get a gig somewhere else, I think. It seems a terrible time to sack him.

Toronto literally grabbed a shotgun and sprayed buck shot all over it's right foot - AGAIN
The timing of this is just mind blowing. Though, I should be used to it by now with TFC. They continue to surprise though. And not in a good way.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment are a joke. Toronto's hockey team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since the late 60's. Same owners. I thought Leiweke was ok, but as soon as he left, I got worried. He was only here for about a year. He really liked Ryan.
I'm not keen on Vanney, but that doesn't matter. He'll be gone in no time anyways. It's TFC after all.

Vanney is an American, but blame Canada, it is a Toronto team. :)
Though, I think that is a somewhat inaccurate representation of the American coaching psyche. Maybe in soccer it is a bit more accurate, but in pretty much all other sports they are the sorta the opposite, in my opinion. Basketball, football, baseball, etc., they always think they can out scheme and don't just let their players play. G
Nelsen was fairly similar to Vanney in attitude, anyways, another reason why the move is strange. Makes no sense.
Of course this also means that Oughton is out of a job too.

Entire coaching staff, except one (Jason Bent) are gone.
This article is much on target:

What a shambles. And only another 10 games to go in the regular season.
I know TFC have had a poor record in the MLS, and people are saying they should have done better with the squad they've built, but hell, have TFC ever been in a better position to make the finals series in their existence? They've still got 1-2 games on all teams in their conference too. Madness...
Wonder what the odds are of them making the playoffs now? Defoe apparently heading for the door too.
Of course this also means that Oughton is out of a job too.
Phoenix yoof manager perhaps?

I'm going to take the negative angle on this and its annoying me cause I seem to be doing that a lot lately.
I don't think Nelsen will score another gig for a while anywhere that counts. He got into Toronto cause of who he knew, he is a young manager with no experience that started at the very top and had no hours on the clock. He had a team with a massive payrole and talent that was doing ok, but not setting the world on fire, his wife is American so most likely located in Northern American for a while and knowing that he is a strong personality, whom is going to want to have that. In US sports, GMs say jump and coaches say how high. If you don't, you gas the coach unless you are a HoFer. What Nelsen said was largely spot on - you keep your shit in house, but also the GM had a point too that they should be getting more out of the talent they had. He is quite forth right and a man of convictions but even he should know that he should have pulled the GM aside away from the mic and said 'bro, WTF?'
Of course this also means that Oughton is out of a job too.

I wonder what he did right?
Bad timing or did TFC get wind he had applied to coach NZ again and waited to see the result before swinging the std NZ # 13 boot

Picked the winning side?

Some interesting info here today:

"All four Toronto trades this season were Nelsen moves, Attfield wrote, but were opposed on each occasion by Bezbatchenko.
"That Nelsen could force them through was testament to the level of faith that Leiweke had in the former New Zealand soccer captain".
Atffield said Nelsen "won over" Leiweke in extensive conversations about Toronto's long-term vision.
The Kiwi also "did more than most" to bring England striker Jermaine Defoe and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar to Canada, having played with them at Tottenham Hotspur and Queen's Park Rangers, respectively.
But Toronto's "recent slide" - 13 points out of 36 since early July - had "undermined Nelsen's power".
Attfield also said Nelsen's "zero head coaching experience" had been "exacerbated" by him choosing to hire "some close confidantes and allies", rather than "strong assistants with long coaching resumes".
Both Defoe and United States international Michael Bradley had "expressed dissatisfaction" with how training sessions were run in comparison with European leagues."
Defoe to sign with 'arry R. at QPR in January transfer window after MLS season is well finished according to UK media reports today.
Tony Smith at the Press in Chch (the Kiwi journalist who knows Ryan best) thinks he will now pursue a career in business - which he has talked about before. Ryan already is co-director of Roar Sports Marketing with his agent Hamish Millar and has continued an active part in the business. He also has a Political Science degree from Stanford.

"...few people have Nelsen's employment options.
His first task now will be helping his two kids settle into the new school year in Toronto. Then it'll be back to work, but in a business suit, not a track suit."
zero head coaching experience? He coach the All Whites FFS.
“Over the last several games, we’ve looked energy-less. I think our team is at its best when we’re out and we’re sprinting and we’re running and we’re getting after other teams.”
WTF does this mean?
Is that a North Americanism for an 'Arryism? "Just faaackin run araand a bit"?
Vanney - as a manger of a junior football team my advice is: "Score at least one more goal than the opposition."
Jesus wept!

Toronto Sun football correspondent Kurtis Larson joins the show to discuss Ryan Nelsen’s shock exit from Toronto FC.
http://www.radiolivesport.co.nz/Kurtis-Larson/tabid/454/articleID/20126/Default.aspx
To bring up an old post, maybe Ryan was a little naive and not fully prepared for this position.
He has no qualifications but it doesn't matter because he once read a book on football tactics and he has been thinking about coaching a lot.
Besides, he's Ryan-fucking-Nelsen, so all you haterz can just back the fuck up.
And definitely don't listen to the whinging of any of those pussy Canucks who think appointing Ryan Nelsen sends a poor message that you don't need qualifications to be a head coach.
And with the amount TFC are spending (Bradley was also purchased for $10m from Roma on top of his salary), it does increase expectations.
Next week on In The Zone we talk to Ryan's assistant Duncan Oughton...tune in.
That really was an awesome post by me that Bullion's dredged up there. Absolute quality hyper-linking. You can all dream of ever achieving such outstanding levels of citation.
I hope toronto FC lost the rest of there games. Useless Barstards! Ryan is the man. Canadian football sucks
I don't know enough about the MLS to know whether Ryan has done a good job or not, but that franchise is an absolute nightmare! The number of people involved, and the chipping off in public, not cool
It sounds to me that most Toronto FC fans were pretty underwhelmed with Nelsen's coaching and they had good reason to be. I think they are even more underwhelmed with the way their franchise is being managed. I really don't think Nelsen was hard done by here.
Rubbish he was hard done by hard! forgoodness sake they were forth on the table. Does that justify a sacking from the coaching staff all bar one. nah. sorry Canada football is useless!!!
He was hard done by by being hired in the first place.
I thought he did well to keep the job as long as he did given the amount they spent on very handy players. The results did not justify that, particularly given they by all accounts played rather dour football.
Rubbish he was hard done by hard! forgoodness sake they were forth on the table. Does that justify a sacking from the coaching staff all bar one. nah. sorry Canada football is useless!!!
They were 9th out of 19 in MLS having spent more than any other team. They were also crap last year. You can argue about the timing of the decision but I don't think those results lived up to anyone's expectations.
Make that 12th out of 19. Lost 2-0 against Philadelphia Union this morning. By all accounts, pretty dreary stuff.
Spiralling down the table now, haven't won in their last 5 matches, and haven't scored a goal in their last 3.
Even for the amount of money they had spent (and are continuing to spend in salaries etc) you've still got to question the timing of this all. No problem with the club management wanting to become a star club or super club (as I've seen bandied about a couple of places). But after the existence TFC have endured, you'd think progress in the right direction may start off by just getting into the finals series? They were closer than they've ever been, and they're about to fuck it all up.
I think Toronto spent lots but still don't have the best team in the comp. I agree as of late had not been so good but had defiantly been doing good enough
Injuries have been hurting TFC in the past couple months, Caldwell in particular has been a massive loss. There just isn't the depth they need to compete with the top teams. They have made some good trades during the season trying to add to the depth but it takes awhile to develop a squad. Imo Bradley has been rather underwhelming since coming back from the World Cup, he doesn't seem to care as much.
Nelsen style was very much like Popovic, defend first and hit on the counter. That doesn't really win fans unless you get results. Over the season they started being more attacking and lost the structure at the back and it cost them a few games.
