Injured or a sign that a transfer announcement is coming?

Did wonder if a sign to a January transfer! But google has revealed no new gossip on Thomas.

Not listed as injured on Soccerway, but of course Zwolle only played 3 days ago in Dutch Cup - so may just be having a rest.

Without him Zwolle are getting thumped. Currently down 0-4 vs Den Haag.

Eredivisie goes into 1 month winter break post this game.

Easily the biggest loss of the year in their first game without Ryan Thomas... if he's that infuential, there should be bigger clubs lining up to sign him in January.

More important things for Ryan recently. He became a dad on Christmas Eve. Congratulations to him and his partner and their baby girl.

Heard he's wanted by Ajax (to replace Hakim Ziyech) and Valencia (to replace Andreas Pereira, on loan from Man U)

(edit: Anderlecht are now seriously interested, I've also heard Monaco and an unnamed German club)

No more games for Zwolle until the 21st, so if a transfer's imminent he has no need to worry about on-field duties.

Monaco would be great because they are known for developing young players also Valencia as Spain would be a good league for him. Please no Anderlecht as that would be a step down.

Pity because Anderlecht are the club most heavily linked with him. Don't worry too much though, they have a proven record of producing quality young midfielders (Tielemans, Dendoncker, Praet) so if he does go there, trust them to do a good job developing him - probably won't be a long term thing for Thomas

Valencia would be ideal in my opinion. The Spanish or Dutch leagues are similar to his style of play. I would imagine the German club would be a no, as he just isn't the physical type of player. Anderlecht is a step down and Monaco would be really hit and miss.

I would say Ajax and Valencia are good options. Hopefully something comes out of it.

Football is a business, especially for the Calibre of team on mention - fringe European comp sides. The reason they buy promising 22-24 year olds is to develop them for sale at the start of their peak career window of 26-28. You expect to double or triple the commercial value of players between this periods (who knows given the crazy inflation at the moment!) When continued development has gone well

Doesn’t mean he won’t grow as a player then leave to bigger things, as almost every player in history has done at some point tbh

PEC-uitblinker wil seizoen afmaken: 'Goed gevoel belangrijker dan 10 miljoen'.

Today. Nationwide press coverage.

PEC Zwolle-luminary Ryan Thomas intends to finish this season in Zwolle: “a comfortable feeling is worth more than €10mio”. Chances are not slim Ryan Thomas will stay at PEC Zwolle until the summer, his daughter acting as a decisive factor.

Ryan Thomas about his daughter Lily-Mae: “My life has considerably changed. With everything I do, she’s become number one and my top priority. She’s leading in my ambition to complete the 2017/2018 season in Zwolle. I cannot see being seduced by another club at this stage. I’m pretty confident I’ll still be at PEC Zwolle come February".

Ryan Thomas realises he has outgrown PEC Zwolle’s level. “I am safe here but I should get out of my comfort zone. It’s time for a bigger club at a bigger stage. Actually, what I would really want is to be challenged again at pain level”.

He’s hoping to join an appealing competition but clearly he is not (yet) ready for the Premier League. He’d be blown away.

Ryan Thomas will not be lured by a pot of gold to a less appealing competition. “A club can offer me € 10mio per year, but a comfortable feeling means much more to me. At the moment I am indifferent to money. I’m only 23 years old and have enough years ahead of me to earn a good living. What counts now is the right choice in terms of 'competitive'“

Wow - how often do you hear stuff like this in football these days? Verde, a promising Italian player, just turned down Napoli to stay at Bologna citing pretty much the same reasons, and the press back home just can't get enough of it.

Back to Ryan, I think he's doing the right thing - he's still only 23 and Zwolle are a decent side...nothing wrong with sticking around. Who knows, he could even commit to the club for the long term - nothing wrong with that either. I'm sure the lifestyle in the Netherlands, the level of the competition and his salary (which would only increase from here on) would all be pretty good.

As a NZ football fan, I'd love to see Ryan take his talent as far as possible. A starting place in a top team in one of the world's biggest leagues would be great for him, and for the game in this country.

There's no doubt his next step will be to a bigger league - at the end of this season, not January window. Italy or Spain?

It is rare for us to be saying that about a Kiwi but yes, Italy or Spain would by far be best suited to Thomas over the Bundesliga or Prem. Would love to see him at Valencia or Sevilla in the next few seasons, or maybe Lazio. As for now I think Atalanta or Sampdoria would be a good fit. Think he could definitely start for Sampdoria and Atalanta already, they both have weaker midfields than the other teams

If you want him to play for a team of duds, maybe! I'm not sure he'd shine in Italy to be honest, as much as I'd like to see him play there. I think Spain or France would work better for him personally.

Valencia's my pick, a lot of their midfield is linked with moves away plus they got a few loanees :)

Wonder if he'd shine more in a weaker/promoted side? Being the controlling player in a weaker team like he is at Zwolle could be part of the reason he plays so well

Not as much of an Italian football expert as NZPower but here’s my take: they have a few very good players, like Felipe Anderson, Luis Alberto, Ciro Immobile and especially Milinković-Savić who is genuinely world class (and also happens to play Ryan Thomas’ position). However a lot of their squad simply is not up to Serie A standards, leaving a lot of holes. A lot of their squad are also duds like he said - older players whose careers never amounted to much. Also, take another look at his profile picture ;)

Ahhhh, yeah definitely out of my depth on this one. When I think of Lazio I think of Ciro and Milinković-Savić and Anderson, and not Lucas Leiva, or literally any pick of their bench/reserves

Ok I was being tongue in cheek as I'm a Roma fan. As much as it hurts (and gosh does it hurt!) to say, I actually agree with DJ - Thomas could do quite well there.

In the last few years Lazio have done extremely well with a fairly average squad - but they seem to get the mix right between classy and hard working players and always play as a unit. They've also had some good luck on the market, selling players well and recruiting fairly unknown players who turn out to be very good.

This being said, I also believe Thomas would absolutely dominate in Spain or even better in France. I think if he does want to step on to bigger and better things than Zwolle, he shouldn't go straight to a top team. A couple of years with the likes of Lazio or similar top-8 sides in Spain or France could turn him into a top player who could then start for a top team whilst in the prime of his career.

Would be great to see him in the bundesliga, that league has a decent history of producing young stars. Wherever he goes lets hope it's a smooth transition and that he can improve his game.

Bundesliga is such a strong league from top to bottom so I'd love to see a Kiwi playing in it but I'm not sure it should be his next move, too physical at this point. Dream scenario: Moves to a club like Montpellier or Nice or even Lyon. Game steps up further, and he kills it. Moves to Dortmund age 24, has a regularly comes off the bench in the first season but only starts cup games and midweek league games at first, before cementing himself in the starting team the second season. Third season he stars, is snapped up by Real Madrid and then wins the Balon D'or for the next 12 consecutive seasons before retiring at 38. At his farewell the Bernabeu is packed out and everybody weeps at the departure of the greatest footballer that has ever lived. So basically this will all happen

Great stuff from Zwolle but holy shark, Alkmaar in third is nuts. I've been guilty of neglecting the Eredivisie of late so I didn't realise they were up so high

Will be no repeat of Zwolle's & Thomas's heroic's in winning the Dutch Cup a few years ago. Knocked out in the quarters, as thrashed 4-1 by AZ.

Zwolle had keeper Boer sent off at 54 mins (2-1 down at that point). They do seem to really struggle whenever Thomas not playing.
