Apparently had a pretty good game. Strange isn't it, different club completely different player, good on him.
Good start - listed as a right half though - still 3 nil win must have done something right
Cheeps, You are having a laugh son!!
Watch a lot of the SPL then? If not, how would you know exactly how average the likes of Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen etc are.

Phoenix could arguably be considered below-average. Just look at the TAB odds/ preseason prdcitions. But yes, I would say, that within the context of their league, the nix are average. Which is probably a better achievement than any previous NZ franchise.

Saw Hearts play just the other day, and thought they were one of the worst professional sides I have seen in a while. Absolutely terrible.

Didn't see the Hearts game so can't comment on that.
I've got a friend from Glasgow who's visiting Australia and saw the Victory game the other week. His opinion was that it was about the standard of the Scottish 1st Division. Not sure whether I'd agree with that but it's all subjective. What's average in one league might not be average in another. Futile argument.

Other than Celtic/Rangers the SPL seems very, very poor. But it is difficult to measure one vs another. I think a few friendlies are in order. Melbourne vs Hibs and Phoenix vs Motherwell.
Steven McGarry has walked into the starting line up at Perth but couldn't get a game at Motherwell - think it's close but the SPL is still the stronger league. A Hearts or Aberdeen would win the A League I reckon.
Cheers for that ,relief at last!!

Having watched a lot of SPL this season I disagree.
Yes Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Aberdeen are as good as the majority of the A-League teams (if fact probably better than). But the rest would be propping up the bottom of the A-League.
I believe the Phoenix would be pushing for a Euro spot if it was in Scotland.
Back to ridiculous comparisons again.
No dig just a 2am post. The A-League definitely wouldn't touch the Championship, and from what I've seen of Leeds, Norwich and Charlton this season, half of the League 1 teams, but I do think that the standard of the A-League is better then alot of expats, either on holiday or living in Aussie/NZ give it credit for.

SPL is way better than the A-League/MLS.
Its closer to the Championship than the MLS etc.
Plus potential for Celtic Rangers to notice etc.

Bar for Rangers and Celtic, alot of the SPL teams are distinctively average.

It's pretty clear that there's a general persausion towards Celtic and Rangers being stand-out teams in that league. Ergo, by definition, all the other teams (presuming no outliers) form an average/ a shorter range.

and using the same definiton, the Wellington Phoenix are distinctly average?
Touchme. No idea. Playing in a top league in Europe and still bagging on his team.
If Killen is playing such 'distinctly average' teams every week(provided he gets on) then why is he New Zealands top striker? Bag him for not choosing to play conference or play for an ALeague team where he can play the Phoenix or Perth.
Actually i do watch a reasonalbe amount of the SPL. Comes with knowing a bunch of scotts Jag, and yes the level is not that high. Hibernian had a very good season a couple of years back but have since lost a few of their star players.
The A League is not a great league, i have not claimed it to be, but outside of the top two in the SPL, the level is not brilliant. Also, i can see the A League getting progressively stronger as players like Culina etc come over here, whereas until the $$ monopoly the big two have in the SPL is over, things will remain the same, a dour predictable two horse race.

Sad but true, Phil. Sad but true. Onwards and upwards tho'.

Indeed. Only way to escape the 'average' tag is through some wins. ;)
Old had a poor game today, left in the dressing room at half time

Old played full 90 minutes v Rangers last night. nil all draw at Kilmarnock. he had to play at right back, rather than in the middle, but sounds like he did a pretty good job marking Gary Naysmith.
Old played the full 90 yesterday (Saturday) in Killies 2-1 win against St. Johnstone
How many appearances and goals (lol) does Old have for Killie? I had a look on wiki and it said 5 but I think that's wrong as I read an article which made it sound as if Old had been playing heaps of games this season.
I've been watching a lot of SPL highlights this year and I'm pretty underwhelmed. Scottish sides have been very poor in European competition (both Champs League and UEFA cup) and the general view seems to be a bit pessimistic. At the moment even Rangers and Celtic seem to be competing with mid level championship sides for talent.
The suggestion that the A-League is equal with the scottish first division to me seems ridiculous. Although it is always difficult to predict as the standard of players at the top of the A-League compared to the bottom is wide apart.
Steven Old to play against CELTIC FC this weekend, currently playing in europe and 1st in the SPL. Still can't make the All Whites.. Beats me.
Who are Mulligan and Scott playing this weekend? (Won't be playing and Waikato fc).
touche, agreed there.
Cheaper to have Mulligan in the squad.
And he isn't thaaat bad.
And he isn't thaaat bad.
Celtic 3 - Kilmarnock 0.
No Old or Killen.
Old hasn't played for a while in the top side that I've seen - is he injured?
They must have worked out he is rubbish. Mulligan in disguise
Killie have just sacked their manager. I wonder how a new coach coming in will affect Old's chances of getting into/staying in the team
Having a look at Killie results, they actually tended to be better when Old was playing... something in that?
probaly not, but it wouldn't hurt him to mention it.
Old last appeared for Killie in the 2-1 away win over St Johnstone on Dec 5th when he was subbed midway through the second half. He hasn't appeared in the squad since, so assume he must be injured. This report on that match has two nice photos featuring Steven:
Former NSL player (from the days of the Kingz) Danny Invincible has come into the team in Stephen's place.
Interesting piece of trivia for collectors of Kiwi soccer memorabilia:
Steven's individual "SPL Super Strikes Trading Game Card" (Panini Series) is available on ebay in the UK. Each card bears a nice colour picture of the player:
You would be able to find Chris Killen's too for this season (or previous) if you look around. Try ebay.co.uk or amazon.co.uk for individual cards or packs.

Sub on in the 64th minute. They lost 1-0 to Aberdeen and sit one point above relegation

How can you compare the standard of A league teams against those in the SPL? They don't play each other. You've said that the top 4 teams in the SPL are better than those in the A League and then say that the rest would be propping up the bottom of the A League. If they are playing every week against teams who are, in your own words, better than A League standard, then how can you make that comparison?
Also strange, given that you have "watched a lot of SPL this season" that you choose Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Aberdeen as the teams to watch. Currently Dundee United and Hibs are sitting in 3rd and 4th place behind The Ugly Sisters. Hearts are 5th (8 points behind Hibs) and Aberdeen are sitting in 7th place at the moment.
Odd as it may seem, I know a fairly large number of people from both Scotland and England, who have recently spent time in Aus and watched A League games, who think that the standard of the A League is sh*te. One described it as a "Mickey Mouse" league in which most of the games are pretty "tedious". Those aren't opinions I necessarily agree with.
Why this obsession with comparing the A League with the SPL or the Championship? Why can't we just enjoy it for what it is?
By the way, this isn't a rant about any perceived criticism of the SPL as I, along with certain other membrs of this forum, have a fairly realistic idea of how good or bad the SPL actually is.

Unused sub in a 4-4 thriller with Dundee United. They sit 2 points above the relegation zone (i.e. last place) and have played one more game. Nervous times.

I wouldn't disagree with that.
One comment I made to a mate was that Melbourne got 18,000 on a Tuesday night against us. Not bad for a "Mickey Mouse" league!
