The general consensus amonst all fans this year is that Reid has been excellent.  Tompkins has been better, but after generally looking like someone who won a raffle to be a professional footballer last season, Reid has been top notch this time round.  If you want begrudging, I will admit that that BFS has been a massive part in Reid's improvement.  There - you happy now?

He would have been probably 3rd choice when he came back as Tompkins has been excellent this season (when played at centre back) and Faye was just monstering people for fun until he got injured.  Collins was also doing ok, but football is all about timing, and Reid came back from injury at just the right time.  As it stands, he will most likely get a run out at Wembley where his prowess from 1.5 yards (as displayed last night) will be most useful.

in fairness he was thrown in the deep end against aston villa by avram grant on opening day last season

he was no accidental signing; the hammers had been tracking him for some time before the world cup

Are you sure about that Reg?  I thought that it came from Ricki who was mates with Avram, from coaching courses.  Word I heard from a few people was the the job Ricki held out for post WC was a coach under Avram at W Ham - was offered the job but then it got vetoed higher up the chain.  Seems Ryan may have had something to do with him not getting the job (was contacted for a view and gave a firm no).  That I certainly have from a v strong source

Alot of rumours Nelsen and Ricki are not great with each other... Nelsen effectively taking over at the WC.

I have not heard of too many other players voicing their displeasure at Ricki's style and / or ability so why is Nelsen so anti (or so it seems / commented on) Ricki.

I would be very keen to see a point chart of the hammers to compare the amount of points averaged by West Ham when he's playing as opposed to not, and goals for and against etc.

You've been trying to fan this same fire ever since the World Cup.

Why don't you stump up with some actual facts for once instead of vague generalisations on the theme of "Ryan hates Ricki"?

You can start by naming your source.

I would imagine that it would take a lot for Ryan to say this (this is the guy who stood up for Elliot when asked if he was premiership quality)

I don't think JD would make this comment unless he was 100 per cent confident in his source.

All is obviously not rosy with the all whites if the captain doesn't rate the coach AucklandPhoenix2012-04-25 16:12:44

Regardless of the Ricki bashing, I'm sure there will be some people on here that are great with stats who will know the answer. I am sure that RH is the most successful ever AW coach.

Seemed to me like their scouting department screwed up big time, his fee would have probably quadrupled after the World Cup. So either they were tracking him but weren't keen until the World Cup, or they signed him based on 3 games

Point two is up to you and jd

Point three would also be correct if you agree with him

Ryan's cousin who was MC at his wedding (i.e. they are close).  2 phoenix players.  One ex-All White.

A significant group of the players don't rate Ricki.  Does it surprise you that a guy with years of premier league experience doesn't rate the methods of an A-League long-ball merchant?

I'm not naming names.  It's up to you whether you think I'm credible or not.

How did Winston's thread turn into a lets bag Ricki coaching thread? Maybe it needs it's own thread.  What do you want to get out of this JD,  Ricki to be sacked as All Whites coach?

I'm curious to know who the nix players are, at a guess Nick Ward and possibly Dani Sanchez don't rate him.   Dura, Ifill and Manny surely wouldn't have re-signed if they didn't rate Ricki.

Back to Winston, good on him for getting the goal and another good contribution to the last game v Hull.

So you're saying that Ryan Nelsen's cousin says that Ryan gave Ricki a bad reference for a West Ham job that he had been offered, which contributed to Ricki not actually getting the job.

OK good. That's at least something approaching verifiable information i.e. a reporter could at least ring Ryan's cousin and get it on record.

As for the two Phoenix players and one ex-All White, unless you name them, then no, I don't think that gives your allegations any more credibility.

It would also help if you could contextualise your allegations a little more.

When you say "a significant group of the players don't rate Ricki", which group of players do you mean? All Whites? Phoenix? Both?

Also, they "don't rate Ricki" in terms of what? International level?, Premier League? (that seems to be what you are saying in regards to Nelsen), A-League?

To be honest, international players not rating their coach would hardly be big news, and I can easily believe that Ryan Nelsen could have said that he honestly didn't think that Ricki was up to Premier League level. If that's the case, though, then Ryan must also think that a lot of other current Premier League managers and coaches aren't up to it because there is some right dross there.

P.S. move this discussion into the Sack Ricki thread or somewhere else if you want.

it's common for a significant portion of players in any team to not like the coach

this has also been the case with the all whites over the years

it has been reported that nelsen had beef with herbert for contributing to the removal of mick waitt as coach

i haven't read anything since that had nelsen 'bagging' ricki, what i have read is nelsen attributing the success of the all whites at the world cup to other factors, without specifically excluding ricki

back to winston, an agent i know told me he was being watched by several independent scouts, working on behalf of agents deployed by several clubs including west ham

The story before the WC (when he was captaining a team in European competition) was that he was being watched by Serie A clubs, which makes you think the English clubs were aware of him.

Reid was in running for "Hammer of the Year" and "Goal of the Season" in the annual West Ham Players Awards on 30/4/12.

Lost out in both categories but his goal v Millwill in Feb. voted one of the three best:

Fantastic result. Let's just hope that the hammers don't go on a spending spree buying defenders and our Winnie holds his spot next year. Last year of his contract so if he can hold his own next year it should give him some good options for the future

It was the home side that made the brighter start, as Freddie Sears’ early cross was dealt with by Winston Reid, before Anthony Wordsworth’s effort forced Jussi Jaaskelainen to punch away.

The hammers were always going to sign another good cb. Shouldn't be any surprise for Reid. Still good chance he will get first crack alongside tomkins. Any premier league side is going to have more than a couple of decent CBs, and it's a long season.
