Gourdie live in London. Good to see he gets a nice wee trip out of his brilliant reporting. Can someone elaborate on how they said Ricki Herbert was a main factor in Reid signing with West Ham?

I've stuck to this because you're using your own ignorance as the norm and using it to argue a ridiculous point. Like I said: solid performances for a decent club in a decent league and in European competitions, been on the radar of Italian clubs (Palermo and Fiorentina) since at least 2009, and has now followed the logical progression to the bigger league that many Danish players from the Danish league have followed over the last 20 years. But obviously since Steve-O never bothered to follow any of this, it clearly never happened.

Meteoric rise. Hah. Meteoric rise is when you move from Georgian second division to the Premiership in the space of a season. Not a move that was being anticipated for about a year.

I apologise sincerely for not scanning the squads of the Danish league for players that were born in New Zealand and were 'on the radar' of other teams.

As for the interviewer who said he was a nobody...I think it would've made more sense to have said 'a relative unknown'...

Although clearly you always knew he was bound for stardom so that phrase wouldn't work for you either.

You don't need to scan the Danish league for players born in New Zealand, unless you've been living under a rock for the past year. It's been pretty common knowledge that Winston Reid was born in New Zealand as many people on here especially have been tracking his career as he was in a decent league and eligible for the All Whites.

Well I had never heard of him until Herbert called him up and I've not been living under a rock either. Common knowledge amonst whom? I read the sports section of the news (here and abroad, online) pretty much every day and never heard a single peep about Reid until not long before the World Cup?

I suspect that the overwhelming majority of EPL/West Ham fans had never heard of him either until he scored THAT goal.

This is a pointless argument really - you guys had heard of him because you follow the fortunes of Kiwi pro's more closely than anyone else would...I'm just saying that where is going, he is an unknown quantity and most will have seen him play 3 times MAX.

edit - I've also just looked up on the Danish League - it is currently the 16th best ranked league in Europe, up from 19th the season before, and the average league attendance was 8300! I think you are overestimating the quality of that league to be honest, as well as underestimating the step up Reid is taking. Time will tell, but I hope he does well.

edit 2 - league seems to be up to 12th for 2011...so, it's an improving league, but when he's been there it's not been hugely highly ranked.

Here's a thread of West Ham fans who sound like they've been living under the same rock as me - http://www.kumb.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=124498&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

You can't base the players on crowd attendance. We signed Jade North as our Australian marquee from a team he only managed six appearances in, and their stadium capacity is 7500. Just look at the Danish national team, the players who are currently in their league. They're much better players than in New Zealand.

Steve-O clearly I know nothing about you, but are you from New Zealand? Because comparing yourself to an English based english fan who doesn't follow New Zealand football or leagues below the Premiership or the other top four leagues wouldn't know who he is. I get that. But the majority of the people on this New Zealand based forum are New Zealanders, who follow New Zealand football and their players. Players in a higher league. There was interest from Serie A clubs, so the managerial staff at Palermo know who Winston Reid is. Scandinavian football followers know who is he, they know his talent.Luis Garcia2010-08-07 16:01:53

I think attendance figures in a league generally says something about the relative quality of that league, no? Maybe not 100% of the time but still.

I am not from New Zealand, no. I've been here a couple of years or so now so that's the perspective I am coming from.

Yes I am not denying there may have been interest from Italy, but the people there who heard of him are professional scouts/managers whose job it is to unearth players!

As I've said, you guys may have known of him previously, but you are a very niche audience looking at the big picture, and not in terms of simply this forum.

I don't think attendance is a big deal when comparing a league.

I could always use the rugby card, we know how poor their attendances unless it's a test match, final or Ranfurly shield game. Yet all the New Zealand teams are some of the strongest in the world.

And in Scandinavian countries with a similar population to New Zealand there is just simply not enough people for huge stadiums, except in the big cities, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm etc.

Two current rising stars to come out of Scandinavian leagues are..
FC Midtjyland's home stadium only seats 11500. But they can still develop a decent player in Simon Kjaer. Norwegian club Molde FK only have 11000 too, they sold Mame Diouf to Man Utd

The average Norwegian attendance in 2008 was just a shade over 9000. They're not huge crowds.

I think the main point is based on their current UEFA ranking the Danish league is behind all the main leagues in Europe. But still above Austria, Switzerland, Czech, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Serbia, Scotland.

If a Phoenix player was to sign with a team in Denmark it'd be a big deal for us.

Come on, Rugby is completely different and you know it. In any case, there were 20,000 at the game in Invercargill today...although Ranfurly Shield. New Zealand has the strongest rugby teams because it's basically the only country in the entire world where Union is the no.1 sport.

I'm not sure how you can deny that the best leagues get the highest attendances, generally speaking.

2 players is not exactly a huge deal is it though? The Scandanavian leagues are not great leagues...not denying in any way that there are some decent players that come out of it though...there's always SOME decent players to come out of even the worst leagues!

Depends on what leagues we're talking about - Danish is pretty good for a country that size, Norwegian OK but no more than that, Swedish's gone backwards in the last 10-15 years, Finnish never great to start with. The Danish league has thrown out a whole heap of players playing around Europe in the top leagues in the past 20 years, if you can't see that, that's your problem really.

As for using the attendances to argue the strength of the league - jeez, you do realise that Denmark only has 5.5 million people? How may people do you expect to turn up at the stadiums that only hold 10-15,000 people? There's no argument there at all really.

There's no argument anywhere here actually. One person says its a meteoric rise, another says its not.  2 opinions taking up a lot of space.

However you measure it, it is a great step for Reid, will be following him with interest. Will be good to be watching the Hammers again, did watch them many years ago.

Yes I know Denmark is only small but an average attendance of 8300 is still not a lot.

Any way, it doesn't matter, he's no longer in the Danish league so lets leave it at that.

From West Ham official site:

Winston Reid had a watching brief against Deportivo after the centre-back trained for the first time before the match. Grant is looking forward to seeing him in action over the next five days before deciding whether to throw him in against Villa. "He has big potential for the Premier League, he has physical quality and technical quality. He is very young so he can only get better.

Flicking through the Knees Up Mother Brown forum it looks as though most fans would have him on the bench but there are a fair few who would start him too. Obviously its just fans opinions and counts for nothing but his signing seems to have been fairly well received

Official Site of the Premier League Match Preview has an predicted starting line up of Upson and Gabbidon as the Center Backs. I know Reid wouldn't be the first choice here, but I thought that Gabbidon would have been last in the pecking order?
