I'd be surprised if Winston considered the Nix, but I guess you never know. He'd be a great marquee for a new Auckland A League side. Not a long bow to say that being of indigenous (Maori) heritage he could have a stronger bond to NZ, than say a Pakeha kid who moved to Denmark at age 12 or whatever it was.
However since those 2010 interviews, he has gone and got married to an English lass and had his kids born there. Would his wife want to head downunder, a long way from her family, when Winnie won't be short of club options in Europe?
Certainly you couldn't question his commitment at the Olympics, playing that QF against Japan when obviously far from 100%, and appearing to aggravate that injury. I'm sure he would absolutely love to go to Qatar. Hopefully he finds a club, where he can play regularly but also doesn't pressure him to avoid any AWs games pre June 2022.
This article alludes that he may have already signed somewhere.

Reid sought a loan move in the early-season English transfer window but it did not eventuate.

The transfer window is now closed in Britain and in Europe’s major leagues until January, but there could be openings in Portugal, Russia or Turkey.
