A-League media rights discussion
here's a novel idea DLB - care about football!
we want choice, we want justice for football in this country, we want fans outside tv 3 's coverage (which isn't as wide as TV1's) to be able to watch our NIX!!
we don't want to sit back and let TV1 treat football fans as second class citizens (largely ignoring us until Beckham hype)
if tv3 can cover football reasonably well, what the hell is tv1's excuse?
What happened to the TV3 4-4-2 online show with Gourdie, Hampton and Louis the ref?? Nothing since November..
stumbled upon this ep http://www.3news.co.nz/sport/4-4-2-episode-27---all-whites-hudson-chatham-cup-and-referrals-2014090910#axzz3bzeRM7Ue
TV3 NEWS AXED
Mediaworks have announced the axing of TV3 News to be replaced by a 6 pm current affairs show drawing on multi-media sources.
Very much sounds like a cost-saving exercise so that hey don't have to pay proper journalists and have their own news department any more.
Wonder if blokes like Andrew Gourdie will still have a job?
News release here:
That is very sad news for football. It will fudge our metrics even more.
surely sports news is the most important in NZ? *fingers crossed*
That is very sad news for football. It will fudge our metrics even more.
Depends actually, it sounds like they might draw a lot of their news from various social media. It may not have rugby dominated sports departments dictating what goes into the news (although the likes of Gourdie and Hamster have been very good at pushing football).
FFA chairman Steven Lowy says broadcasting A-League on free-to-air a must.
He is playing down the money but also saying their is very strong interest from FTA, and also saying FFA are looking at Optus and beIn sport
I guess somewhere in this mix will be the NZ coverage at some stage. This is also from the Chairman not the CEO which to me says the deal could be close ... lets hope so anyway would just love to be on a commercial FTA broadcaster.
More news from the Fin Review
Says among other things after the grand final they will go into negotiation mode.
Football Federation Australia chairman Steven Lowy has laid down a marker for the organisation's upcoming broadcast rights negotiations, insisting that large, commercial free-to-air coverage is a must for the sport.
From the above Fin Review article the team working on the negotiations looks impressive.
In February, the FFA hired London-based strategic adviser Oliver & Ohlbaum to report on potential bidders for the rights, the different ways they could be packaged and their potential value.
The FFA has had a board sub-committee of Lowy and FFA directors Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, Commonwealth Bank's Group executive of institutional banking and markets, and Crispin Murray, the head of BT Funds Management, working on the rights, and an advisory group including Melbourne City director Simon Pearce and Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow.
"We will approach it in a very businesslike fashion," Lowy said.

Ability test #1: give them a map and see if they can locate New Zealand.
Then I start reading any further news on that.
Mainland FC you just got your licence extended, you will be part of the next media deal, I am sure without any proof or direct knowledge that FFA are talking to broadcasters in NZ ...
I know you may feel FFA are the great evil, but IMO for a new league just finishing 11 seasons, considering the level of competition In Australia, with AFL & NRL in Australia & RU in NZ... add the turmoil that was the old NSL in Australia, which was inept, corrupt, inward looking, constantly blaming others and struggling to get any media.
It seems I am foolish advising what the Chairman, broad and CEO are doing pertaining to the A-League main media revenue income stream would be of some interest...
Just another bit of incompetence by FFA that this year the A-League was broadcast in 84 countries building status hopefully..
There are 84 countries with broadcast agreements covering A-League matches as well as a global streaming deal with www.livesport.tv that means all 135 regular season matches and 6 Hyundai A-League 2016 Finals Series can be watched on line.
Under FFA’s distribution arrangements with World Sports Group (WSG), full live match broadcasts are available in the USA, China, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, Singapore and Myanmar. Other major markets across Asia and Africa have delayed coverage and extensive highlights packages.

Been home all day got a medical thing to do bored so for what its worth ...
The A-League is ready for a commercial FTA station the schedule is relatively simple.
MV V SFC 3 games
MV V City 3 Games … CB 6
MV V AU 3 games ….CB 9
SFC V WSW 3 games … CB 12
WSW V AU 2 games …. CB 14
WSW V City 3 games … CB 17
Roar V SFC
Roar V WSW
Roar V City
Roar V Perth … 4 games … CB 21
SFC V City … 2 games .. CB 23
New V CCM .. 1 games … CB 24
WSW V New
WSW V CCM
WSW V Perth …. 3 games … CB 27
So far 27 games add the finals 5 games, add final 3 matches in the FFA Cup, add 16 i.e. 8 each Socceroo and Matilda matches.
That’s 52 matches including 16 internationals, 5 A-League finals, 3 FA cup finals, 17 derby A-League matches and 10 A-League matches with ratings teams.
The issues pertaining to allowing the above on FTA are to be negotiated with Fox. Fox currently want this schedule for itself. The next is the night, Fox want Saturday night which is what both 9 & 10 want.
What is also interesting is if we go back to prior to the last media deal. Fox wanted FTA exposure so there ratings would lift essentially saying they want Football across FTA to help them.
My back of the envelope cal’s and assumptions. With the lost of the EPL the Saturday night thing may be far more negotiable than in the past. The ratings normally Commercial FTA rates between 3 & 4 times that of Fox so even on the terrible SBS ratings of the past year then 250 to 300 K would be expected for the above schedule of A-League rounds, finals and international matches I have 23 matches my guess is across all 23 an average of a million.
So 27 matches between 250 & 300 K and 21 matches around a million… that as my uncle Leo would say is a SH*T easy sale.

I am neither being paranoidal, nor I want to dampen your enthusiasm. However, you as well as I surely know that it was the media broadcasting rights allocation in NZ that caused a lot of the noise from Gallop and from FOX commentators late last year.
FFA rightly remembered that it was them who negotiated lousy broadcasting deal via SKY TV in New Zealand, giving them peanuts from SKY TV screening games here, and they promptly decided to use the expiring license opportunity to try and replace us with a local (AUS) team which would be covered by the FOX deal, not the SKY TV deal.
Of course it would be great to see A-League games, or at least game packages, on FTA TV in New Zealand. It could be as simple as asking SKY TV to provide some sort of a coverage as above on their own FTA channel (Prime TV) here in NZ, since they (Sky TV) already get the footage anyway. However, I remain cautious when it comes to sense of "coverage entitlement" when one is a supporter of non-EPL football in NZ.
Couple of articles about the new media deal and expansion and Pro & Reg
Must be off season...
If Football Federation Australia wish to increase the TV rights revenue stream from the A-League the best way is to ensure more "product": more matches and a longer season.
Reasonably long article with a statement by Steven Lowy
http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2016/05/06/...
In his most considered statements about expanding the A-League since taking on the sport's top job last November, Lowy said he wants to grow the competition, but is more focused on making the league viable.
"Nine teams in Australia is not enough," Lowy said.
"It's not enough for us to penetrate the commercial opportunities ... it's not enough for us to properly compete against AFL, rugby league, rugby union and cricket."
Then comes the but.
Lowy said "pockets" of opportunity in the white-hot competitive sporting market existed for football, but they would need to be "carefully nurtured" over the long-term.
Well played to whoever put up the Ipswich link...
Optus enters the fray for A-League, Socceroos broadcast rights
Optus is pursuing broadcast rights for the A-League and a number of Socceroos matches to bolster its football offering as it faces criticism for limiting its English Premier League coverage to its own customers.

Mods have copied a bit .. no where all because it can be very difficult to load...
Essentially its an update from the Australian Financial Review of what could happen on FTA this season a suggestion FFA are working at getting ot off SBS and on to a commercial FTA...
Moving the league on from the public broadcaster a year ahead of schedule would hinge on negotiations for the rights from 2017 onwards being brought forward and put subscription rights holder Fox Sports, which has first and last rights, in the box seat.
It is unlikely that a commercial free-to-air broadcaster would want to take on the rights for the final year of the current contract without having secured the next deal.
Additionally, Fox Sports, which holds the rights and would need to sanction a Saturday night game, the preferred match, moving to free-to-air in the current deal, would be unlikely to do so without signing a new long-term contract.
It is still early days with the FFA engaging with a number of interested parties and beginning official negotiations in late April, as first revealed by Fairfax Media.
The FFA is keen to move the one free-to-air game, which is on SBS on Friday nights, to a new commercial partner, with Ten on the record as keenly interested – however price will be an important factor.
It is understood Ten are keen on a Saturday game.

I read this awhile back :
Wellington needs to work with the FFA to improve the broadcast rights situation in New Zealand as another benchmark in their 10-year licence extension.
“There’s all sorts of parties coming into play in the Australian market and the same is happening here in New Zealand, with third parties coming in, so who knows where it’s going to end up,” Dome said.
So I emailed Lightbox sports and they said this:
We have neither been bought out or approached by Welnix about the A-League.We are now broadcasting Rugby and Rugby League throughout 23 countries in Asia, as well as continuing to broadcast the LPGA and PGA TOUR in NZ.
Regards,
I guess that only leaves Vodafone TV or that Neon thing??
Football - Real fans, real passion
Football - 90 minutes of passion
Football - In NZ - Fans get screwed over without any thought or consideration.

I guess that shows that Lightbox are ignorant about the market. Welnix cannot discuss A-League broadcasts rights, it has to be via A-League. But fair enough, maybe it is WelNix media relations representative (if such person exists) that needs to pick up a phone.

Just curious but what do you guys think the rights value to FFA should be if it went to a direct to consumer model like PLP for A-League rights in NZ.
I pay nothing now other than my sky subscription so in my opinion it should stay that way

That's certainly some people's view, others might just cut sky and want to subscribe direct to the A-League and I guess what I'm curious about is how much revenue they think this could generate.
The thing is you're not going to grow the audience by having a direct subscription model, you want to be where people will watch the team on a whim or while channel surfing. You need to remove friction - and that means either Sky or FreeView atm.
The goal needs to be improving ratings and then using that to improve revenue, if you move to a platform where revenue improves but not ratings then you will just plateau there.
My preference would be a free to air channel playing the Pheonix games and Sky or online playing the rest of the A-League.
Sorry Ryan, too forward thinking and progressive for SKY to approve something like that. Excellent idea though.

not sure why it's SKY's call - if FFA and Welnix think this is the answer then it needs to be a part of negotiations next time (to whomever is interested in purchasing it). I would imagine that this would lead in the short term to a reduced amount of broadcast income for FFA with the hope like Ryan says of growing the viewership numbers for an improved payment in the future.
It's not like SKY or any business would release content/product they had paid for to the public for free if they didn't have to.
I emailed BeIN sports pacific.
I asked when will BeIN sports be available in NZ via net etc. They said"
beIN SPORTS is not available in New Zealand right now, however this will be available soon via spark".
I ask this year or next they said"
We do not hold the rights to broadcast in New Zealand this year. Unfortunately we do not have this information."
Followed by"
Once confirmed it will be posted on our social media (Facebook, twitter..) or website".

Clever, looking forward to your break down on how this effects the Nix.... being an Asian competition with a huge addition to its revenue base and with both China and today India and lets not forget the Middle East spending budgets ... how this will if at all effect the Nix...

Why exactly would the Nix care about a USD 180M deal? It's about as relevant to us as the Honduran league getting USD 180M. Other than the transfer market, the Nix do not have an avenue to compete against the Asian teams as far as I am aware.
CCM and the other Oz clubs on the other hand... so I think it's more important that you come up with a hypothesis on how it affects your own club.
like to but I am not clever...whereas srgh.Jeff is ... An both our teams are in and Asian competition competition for quality players will be harder.
From 442 seems SBS will not be bidding for the next Socceroo rights and we will be with Fox , a FTA commercial and other things and a bumper deal is hoped.
