First concert was John Farnham & Billy Joel at Athletic Park in 1977 or 78??

Saw George Thorogood twice at the Old Town Hall over the years.

Worst concert was Dire Straits at Athletic park in 1985, was ruined  by 27 sythesisers linked together & over powering Knophler's guitar.

Best by a country mile - Pink Floyd, Sydney entertainment Center in January 1988. About a week after Western Springs. The Center had mirrors on the ceiling so when the lazers hit them, they bounced back into the crowd. Having the 5 speaker console set up indoors gave it true sound surround and probably a world first 5.1 sound system.

Only concert I missed that I had tickets to, was The Plasmatics at the Shepherds Bush Odeon in the mid 80's. The local council canned the show because they were going to blow a car bonnet off a car on stage and had a chainsaw wired up to the sound system.

I'd have loved to have seen The Who in the mid 70's, Queen, Deep Purple MKIII, The Eagles, Meatloaf in concert.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

ahhhhhhhhh the 80's

Don't you mean "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! The 80's" When does the KLF revival start?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Another gig I'll never forget was the double bill of Toots and The Maytals and Burning Spear from a few years ago.

Toots is the Elvis of reggae and rocked everyone silly, then Burning Spear came out and laid down some seriously bass heavy reggae choons. It was ganjalicious.

First concert was Dire Straits at Athletic Park in 85....

AC/DC there in 91 was a blur....spent time at the medical tent with a badly cut eye and a fractured cheekbone....but left them and woke the following morning on my couch with a cushion stuck to my bloodied and open eye wound.....off to the hospital for 5 stitches....

Red Hot Chilli Peppers at Wgtn Winter Show Buildings in 92

Best ever was Pink Floyd at Earls Court in 94.....mindblowing and single most amazing entertainment night of my life....

Beastie Boys at the Astoria London in 94

Cypress Hill at Brixton Academy in 94

Supergroove at the London Astoria in 95

Massive Attack at the Royal Albert Hall in 98

Groove Armada at Brixton Academy in 99

Roskilde Music Festival outside Copenhagen in Denmark for four days in 97 seeing Prodigy, Smashing Pumpkins, Suede, David Byrne, Silverchair, Radiohead, Nick Cave, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Motley Crue, Live, Isaac Hayes, John Fogerty, Beck, Wu Tang Clan, Supergrass, Steriogram, Sneaker Pimps, Primus, Reef, Pavement, Ian Dury and the Blockheads.....and the Otara Millionares Club....

The Berlin Love Parade in 97

Zurich Street Parade in 98

Dance Valley Festival outside Amsterdam in 99

Sooooo many great musical memories.....

Are you sure you weren't having a momentary lapse LG and you were actually at home lying on your cot?

nope, for once I'm being serious, they had small mirrors to redirect the beams back into the audience. It also gave off the effect of more lazers than there really was which was about 20+ anyway. Each Floyd Droid (As they were known) had two banks of 4 lazers per unit and there 3 or 4 of them alone.

So the Floyd fans had an excuse for stumbling around looking dazed that night

I had a wall length wardrobe like that (mirrors), lasers would have been dangerous!!?
Interested that you'd seen Billy Joel.  In 81 (Logan Campbell Centre) he did a couple of lesser known songs, 10 minute sets with saxophones, unbelievable live versions of Until the Night and Captain Jack.

1st concert for me was Simple Minds at Wellington town hall with Dance Exponents as support band. Was about 1987?

One that sticks out was Split Enz in Palmy North 1992. First and only time I have been at the very front. Tim Finn leaned forward and shook my hand.

Best concert is a tie between U2 at Mt Smart Nov 2006 (Saturday concert) and The Foo Fighters at Vector Arena in May of this year.

Carcass in 1992. My ear drums still haven't recovered.

My first was an all dayer in Bradford's Queens HAll for the princly sum of about $5 in about 1989.

Lawnmower Deth
Intense Degree
Electro Hippies
Some Death Metal outfit
Carcass headlining (cos Micky Napalm Death was still in Europe, so Bill Steer and his two buddies decided to give it a go)

Sadly Carcass sucked. The sound system made reek of putrefaction sound good quality! Fortunately I did see them in Liverpool around 1994 and they were stunning.

Best is very dificult, but seeing Snuff for the first time supported by Leatherface was a stunning introduction to Punk Rock's finest talent, made all the more memoable by the fact that we had to spend 2 hours in casualty cos a friend's shoulder was dislocated as we,ahem, danced.

Green Day in the Hull Adelphi in 91 was also pretty special, as it was very up close and personal long before the days of drugs (well, hard ones) and celebrity culture.

Anyone remember Australia's Hard-ons? Also saw them at the Adelphi around the same time: absolutely incredibly powerful sound live.

hammond gamble did a great version of "long distance love" (little feat) at the raglan hotel (or the hotel that's in Raglan) sometime in the mid eighties

ah yeah, now it's coming back to me

Mahana at Nambassa (2nd stage) 1978 - if anyone on this board saw that performance i'd love to know (they had to play a number again for the encore- but they were brilliant!)

and at the Hillcrest '79-'84 saw a few good kiwi bands there!!!!

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

The Clash, Logan Campbell Centre 1982
Buzzcocks, Powerstation 1989
Ramones, Powerstation 1990
Hepcat, Warped Tour, Coromandel 1998.

And not the best gig, but the best experience, From The Jam last year at Sky City. Was close to tears.

I was sober cos I had to drive home. I'd had 22 Jacks staying with me for a couple of days before the gig and had to get one of them back to Ak that night. CJ Ramone was on bass for them on that tour as a fill in, not many people know that.

Yeah, I was sober as well, my mate and I decided when it wrapped up to try and make Hamilton in time for New Years, did it with 15 minutes to spare.

It was a crackijng day, and as you say Hepcat the highlight.

The year before at Avondale was good as well - Royal Crown Revue.

I traded a "My Three Sons" baseball cap that I had for Greg Lee of Hepcat's stage shirt, which was well cool. Sadly, I left it in Chicago with my ex.
I didn't see the one at Avondale, well miffed, as the Bosstones were playing. Sales Conference in Hamilton or something equally lame.
