Ha, that's funny as. I'd never actually read the first few pages. Mate there is some anti-cyclist bleating there!!
I love how this thread starting out hating on cyclists and has now become a place for us to chit-chat...
Collecetd some great gravel rash pok marks on fore arms and palms of the hands today. Bloody rain.

Mind not on the job really, only myself to blame.
More pissed about hole in jacket elbow tbh!
Flying down a hill on the skyline ridge, took the slippery, muddy central line (mistake!), applied back break too hard, fishtailed and stomach surfed across mud onto gravel part of track. No gloves, as I find i overheat massively unless it is below zero.
I went for a run at around 04:45 today, was a bit cold.
My God you're a brave man! No money in the world would've got me out of the house at that time this morning.
Yes there is. You just get to it from 4:00 AM, not as a prelude to 06:00 AM
This.
I'm sure HN's friend has experienced a fair few of those...
4:00 yes. He's usually home by 04:45.
By the way, sorry for not getting back to you yesterday, but, ahem, domestic duties got in the way.

Wow, that's crazy committed. Much respect.
I went for a run at around 04:45 today, was a bit cold. Also cycled in on my 16km commute. Two pairs of gloves and ground efffect hydrofoil socks did'nt really keep the cold out but I survived. Apart from the nice wind burn across my face.

FT - there is a fine line between heroism and madness!
Lunchtime sortie up to the skyline ridge. Makara hills and Sounds lacking snow, but I had to get through 6inches of the stuff on the ridge top. Disc Brakesburning red on the way down (being a bit cautious after Friday's mishap)
Just bought myself my first road bike the other week. Finally time to get off my bum. Forgot how crap I was at riding a bike though

Bought a Scott 2011 S50. Got it for like $1100, down from $1400. Nothing fancy but seems to do the job. Been around the Bays a couple of times but that's it so far. Might go exploring once weather lightens up.

Does Denmark have many hills?
Don't know but there's lots of Danes there, especially apricot ones.

When buying a bike the things I look for is firstly what am I going to use it for?
Secondly which Bikeshop? Which shop do you intend to get it from? I've had good and bad advice from bike shops around the Wellington Area. What is their after care like? Do they seem interested in selling you a bike? Do they seem to know what they are talking about?
Thirdly fit, make sure you test ride it, and not just for a quick 5 minutes either, take it out jump off a few curbs, mash it up for a good 20 minutes. I usually take the wife along so she can be a hostage to stop the LBS thinking I've stolen the bike.

Yeah not seen Michael here for a while, I'm really pleased he started this thread and gave us a home. ForteanTimes2011-08-05 12:18:54

nasty, you wearing gloves? What happened?

Sometimes there is nothing you can do. I've done this and weirdly smiling about it thinking about the times I've done this.
I've fishtailed twice big time over the last 3 days and they say bicycles can't aquaplane! (I'm joking).
I get claustrophobic with gloves which I reckon is similar to what you feel/get. Both winter and summer gloves and I spend a lot of time trying on gloves that feel ok but none do. However picking gravel out of my hands really got me over the whole glove thing.
So I pick a day and go around every bike shop within biking car distance try on gloves and the ones that feel best I buy and then buy several pairs - try this honest it worked
Sage like advice, I am sure...and it might loosen Torpedo 7's grip on me!HarryHotspur2011-08-13 14:58:16
So who's going to brave the snow today then?
Not me! I like biking, but...
Did see a few hardy souls on the way to work though (and a few joggers as well).

All good.
I caught the last 40 before it turned really ugly, and the hail occured between my SUnday League game and arrival at petone.By the way, sorry for not getting back to you yesterday, but, ahem, domestic duties got in the way.
Get a room you two
Yeah but I have to shift a few pounds for the new Nix Stripey.
Campylobacter is quite good for that as a quicker alternative.

Amen to the disc brakes. I've no granny gears on my Salsa but it does have disc brakes, which have far better stopping power in this weather.
Still, managed to have a minor crash when the bike slid out on me after hitting black ice. There is nothing you can do with black ice as as soon as you are riding over it you've gone. Just have to remember not to try and break your fall with putting your hand out, my shoulder/upper arm took the brunt today.

Interesting article on falling numbers of people learning to drive in the UK.
Cycle like the Danes to cut Carbon Emsissions says study.

fair point, but hey them hills give us He-Man-like buttocks, which are awesome.
To be fair, it sounds like it could be a tourist - rental car + shouting in a foreign language.
Considering getting back into Mountain biking again, any suggestions for a mountain bike under $1000, as my old bike has had it and don't think its worth getting fixed.

I wrote that a couple of years ago. I'd add that the bike shop for me is as important almost as the bike itself particularly if you are not going to be doing bike-wrenching work yourself.
I like Burkes in town, Penny's not so much and Capital Cycles is good but usually quite high end.
Also your old bike, the old saying goes your first bike tellls you what you want/need in your second bike. So what did you like and not like about the old dinger?
Most big brand bikes Trek and Giant will have very similarly-specced bikes for around the same price. I'd pick x4 bike shops, figure out what you want to do with your biking, (this will involve some a bit of googling), go to the bike shop see what they say. Test ride and make your picks, come home and re-google some reviews.
The more you can spend, the better the bike. people spend f all on bikes and wonder why they are heavy and boring to ride. Better bikes tend to last also. Trademe is good but 2nd hand bikes can be overpriced here in NZ.
I had a couple of $1000 entry level Scott mountain bikes and found them lovely.
Try Bicycle.co.nz. 95% online (cheaper than Torpedo 7), but open 2 or 3 days a week if you can get to Seaview. Also, the small outfit in Te Aro might be worth a punt, if only to avoid CBD parking charges.HarryHotspur2012-03-04 13:51:46
Saw a cyclist on Cambridge Tce having a fag while riding! Doesn't that defeat the purpose? It's like going for a run & buying a packet of ciggies from the corner dairy along the way.

Nah I used to do this when I smoked. One of life's little pleasures. Obviously you can't cycle fast or you destroy your lungs.
