The problem with our inexperience at test level in the batting lineup comes back to the point TopLeft made, our domestic cricket is a step below. The guys who score runs at Domestic level, Sinclair, Cumming, Bell, Papps, How are all incredibly experienced and have all captained their domestic sides, if even 2 of them had made the step up there would have been a better core of experience. Instead we pick guys like Flynn who undoubtedly have potential but have no real experience behind them, MacIntosh did but that tends to be the exception.
 
Downey why not Sinclair? He has had chances yeah, but so has Fulton. If you are picking the 6 best batsman in the country to be in that top 6 I would like to see you come up with an argument that says Fulton deserves to be there ahead of Skippy. Also Downey MacIntosh 31 in that 2nd innings was exactly what the game needed, his 31 and Elliots 20odd were so incredibly vital in that win.
 
MacMillan in his book also talks about the growing impact his diabetes was having in his cricket, so yeah he didn't get on with Bracewell/Charlesworth but I would also suggest we wouldnt have seen to much more of him (especially in the whites).
 
As to who the long term top 3 is, I think Guptill and Flynn at 1 and 3. Not sure about the 2nd opener, probably Waitling in the long term or this guy down here who is scoring big runs this season but in the meantime I would stick with MacIntosh. Taylor and Ryder have 4 and 5 sown up, then it depends on what you want to do with an all-rounder, do you move Vettori up to play an extra bowler? Lengthens the tail a little bit to much for my liking. This time last year I was advocating picking Williamson in the next year or 2 and asking Jesse to take on more bowling given that Williamson is worth 10 overs a day probably. However he hasn't produced so much of late and I hear he wasn't to impressive in India on the A tour. That leaves Franklin as the obvious allrounder but my feelings on him are relatively well known, only a test match bowler on a lawn when you have a bank of cloud above you, yet to see him produce with the bat at international level the way he has domestically.
 
So that takes me back to square one, with Ryder out I would stick with the same balance. Elliot is probably the best option at 6 if you can get overs out of him as long as BMac and DV score runs.
 
Healthy to have this debate after we won a test match though!
 
If we can sort our top 3 out and can have Ryder back and him Taylor and Bmac on form with this current bowling lineup I think with some luck we can push the Aussies in March. They will be onto another opener by then because Watson wont last to much longer, Siddle and Hilfenhaus don't frighten me neither does Hauritz. YF should spend T-Shirt money on getting Johnsons Mrs to have another fight in the press with him Mum and then he will spray it all over the shop and Bingo we win the series.
