Interesting article on Stuff today about Vettoris potency as a 4th innings bowler, been the case now for quite a while but almost the article no bugger was willing to write because you can't really criticise the guy given what he brings to the team.
Sure, he's no Murali or Warne in terms of running through a line up but he's taken 6 wickets this match (I think). Martin's taken none. We put an enormous amount of pressure on Vettori to save us, rather than expecting some of the others to stump up from time to time.
Yes, he's far and away our best player. But he's still only one of 11.
Yeah Martin has lost it but as a Spin bowler your main job is to take wickets in the 2nd innings and spin your team to victory. Can anyone honestly tell me the last time Dan did this?
I love the guy, he is by far the best we have but it is a weakness in his game, just saying...
Agreed that there's precious little other than that (especially against quality opposition).
While I also agree that it's a spinner's job to turn it in the 4th innings I think some allowances should be made since he's had to assume the job of most reliable and prolific run scorer of late. Plus he's due some credit for the wickets Southee took yesterday - traps well set, great captaincy.
All in all, I think it's a little simplistic to just look at the spin element.
