No way Watling will keep and open. It's too big of a work load. You can't expect a guy to come out and bat after a day and a half keeping.
True, but he only gets 10 overs rest batting at #7 anyway.

Yeah I knew it was a subs fault all along but it is pretty terrible in any case. A lot of people would have thought exactly that, not worth reading if you don't know who our players are. Geenty is probably quite pissed off about it I imagine.
I was looking at it today (In an ideal world)
1
2
3 Williamson
4 Taylor
5 Ryder
6 Watling
7 Vettori
8 Southee
9 Bracewell
10 Boult
11
Now where do you fit McCullum. Lets just ignore his 'I want to be an opener statement' for a moment.
Do you push everyone down a slot and put McCullum in at 6 and ask Ryder to shoulder some bowling (with Williamson part time spin?)
Do you leave him to open
Do you promote Watling to open and give the gloves to McCullum
Either way, Hesson has dug a hole and at the same time tossed McCullum, his captain anointed, under a bus. The talk back today was basically saying that if Taylor is being told to swallow his pride and get back into the team, then McCullum can do it too and that with the recent bating scores that he has, McCullum is struggling to hold his spot on runs alone.
Shambles is only the half of it.
Hasn't Hesson come out in the last twenty four hours and said:
1 - McCullum won't open
2 - Waitling will keep
Disagree with who ever said they are still set on the four quicks thing. From what has been said I think this will be the team
1) ? 2) Guptill 3) Williamson 4) Taylor 5) McCullum 6) Ryder 7) Waitling 8) Vettori 9) Southee 10) Bracewell 11) Boult
That is incredibly tough on Brownlie but if Ryder doesn't play then he takes that spot. I guess Fulton has the running for the other opening spot but there are probably a few guys playing for the spot in the next couple of rounds of Plunket Shield. If Vettori doesn't play then I would be tempted to pick Astle. Not sure he offers a whole heap less with the ball than Patel does.
McCullum needs to man-up and open. It is the best thing for the team at this point in time because we are loaded with middle-order batsmen. If he decides he 'wants' to drop down it's at the expense of another player and likely to be a player who has been performing.

This article seems to suggest that: McCullum will drop, Taylor will be back, Watling will stay #6 & Keep, Brownlie did enough to keep his spot, and Fulton will open. If you assume Taylor at 4, Brownlie 5 & Watling 6 then you have McCullum at 7 or 3, meaning we either would have only 3 seamers, Williamson opens, or Williamson is dropped.
No matter how this turns out I am going to be baffled by the batting order that lines up in the first test I think. Someone is going to miss out, especially if McCullum is in the middle order as well.
This whole thing is just absolutely mindboggling. I have no confidence that the best possible side will be picked, and every confidence that comprimises will be made to allow McCullum the middle order role he now wants. I have been pretty supportive of McCullum's shift to opening, and dropping the gloves, as if he says his body can't cope with test keeping, who am I to argue with him, and his opening record, for all his faults, is better than most we have had. However, if he does shift, I will be firmly in the camp that thinks he is after what is best for himself not for the team. Unfortunately that seems to be matched with a coach that seems to think that 'whatever is best for Brendan IS best for the team'.
Yep we'll find out whether "I want to do what's best for the team" is really what he's thinking when the next test side is named. If he opens, he's doing what's best for the team. If he drops down and pushes out an in-form/talented player he's doing what is best for him. That would mean we have to bring in Fulton who is not in our best 11 (long form) players.
We're all weary that with Hesson as coach McCullum could well be making his own decisions and Hesson does what suits McCullum. Hesson is off his head if it's his decision to move McCullum down. We have no one else who can open!
I listened to the first hour of Vietch on my commute home last night, he was going on about how he could release the 'new information' that came to light re Taylor and Hesson before that odd press conference with Moller and White where they didn't answer any questions. Did anyone hear what the information was? Was it interesting?

Oh dear...
It gets worse...
"White told Radio Sport the letter was Bond's opinion only and Hesson's job was safe.
He said he had spoken to Hesson, Carter and manager Mike Sandle who told him Bond's letter had "a number of inaccuracies" and it was important to note he was not in the meeting in Sri Lanka when Taylor was demoted.
"They've been in South Africa. Shane Bond has worked closely with him in a very challenging tour, they've cleared the air with a conversation. They're in a professional working relationship. I don't think that's an issue at all."
Seriously? WTF? This guy is totally out of his depth. How long can you stick your head in the sand before you realise that you're an ostrich.
Mike Hesson is a f'n liar. There is nothing else to say in this. How can he keep the support of NZ cricket? This is just ludicrous.
"I've found the content of these interviews distressing. I believe the coach has been dishonest in his assertion around the miscommunication of the captaincy split with Ross."
"At no time during my conversations with Mike Hesson, that mostly included Bob Carter and/or the manager was the captaincy spilt ever suggested."
Would love to hear the muppet Richard Boock's opinion on this now that Hesson is a proven liar. Is Taylor still a 'sook'?
David White's comments that 'Bond wasn't in the room' is an irrelevant nothing. Surely logic states that in any subsequent coaches meetings where changes to captaincy were discussed (I can't imagine that a change like that would only be discussed in one meeting and then left alone) that Hesson would have mentioned at some point he intended Taylor to be kept on as test captain. There is just spin upon lies and lies upon spin.
According to NZC (especially since Hesson was described as a great communicator) both Shane Bond and Ross Taylor must be idiots that can't understand plain english to misinterpret what was apparently made pretty clear that the split captaincy was the desired outcome.
I said this at the time, what has Mike Hesson won exactly? One T20 championship? I was pushing for someone like Bradburn, but anybody who comes in as coach is at a hiding to nothing. Although they would do a far better job than Hesson is.

Trouble is I don't think anyone would touch the job with a bargepole now.
If I was a coach and I had the option of a first-class side, maybe with the option of some T20 gigs (how many coaches are there in the IPL?), or taking on this rabble with the back office as it stands... well...
Especially given that NZC have burnt bridges with anyone who might look at taking it up purely on a patriotic level. Wright did that, and look how it turned out for him.
Jesse won't play for the black caps now either. His manager said yesterday that his comeback largely hinges on the team environment and that he would be unlikely to return unless it's anything but good for him. Good news for Wellington though I guess.
I'm just speculating here, but I'm not sure Jesse is keen on the BlackCaps at all. Obviously he gets a lot of criticism, some warranted, some not, and I'm just not sure he can deal with it. And if so, I have no problem with him just bashing it in all forms of domestic cricket and making money playing IPL etc.

Jesse Ryder wow.
Over 2. Jesse Ryder wow.
Over 3. Jesse Ryder wow, then gone.
Jesse Ryder: more runs in three overs than the entire Black Caps XI in an innings.
Australia 30/6. Go Sri Lanka!
Australia 30/6. Go Sri Lanka!
loving this aus game
Wellington firebirds into T20 final against Otago. Good stuff
Come on Sri Lanka, don't bottle it
This is hilarious, straya just dropped a catch and missed a run out opportunity.
And.... Elliott is playing.....
McCullum is worse than Dhoni at DRS. Awful, awful, awful judgement.
And.... Elliott is playing.....
McCullum was then informed DRS could not be called upon because there was no electricity. CSA said all relevant parties were informed that the technology could not be used until the problem had been rectified.
That's OK, with his record I am 100% certain it would have been crashing into middle stump.
I find it sad that I am more excited about the mickey mouse final this afternoon than I am about an NZ ODI series. I didn't even watch more than 20 overs last night, even though we were doing well. I just didn't care.
Is it sad that watching the Black Caps show some sort of courage during SA's innings cheered me up slightly?
Australia 222/9 (50 ov)
Sri Lanka 14/0 (3.2 ov)
Sri Lanka require another 209 runs with 10 wickets and 46.4 overs remaining
I'm as guilty of this as anyone else, but I love how quiet this thread has gone since we won! Credit to Franky for a top knock, lets do it again today fellas!
