Surely it'd help, you'd get your eye in etc, the only problems could be risk of injury or logistical problems (if the nets are too far away).

It does happen at grounds where the facilities are available.  can't do it when you are possibly in shortly (which rules out the NZ team doing it at the moment!) , but I remember watching a test 10 years or so ago on a trip to Auckland, and players in the middle order were having a net session out the back at the number 2 ground, so it does happen.  I guess the other issue is the availability of net bowlers.  At the time before going out to bat the point is more about getting into picking up the ball from the hand and getting moving and bat to ball, so throw downs suffice.
