Apart from kinda crazy places like Afghanistan, Christchurch. Live in Burnham (half hour out of Christchurch) for 3 years and worked in the city, I LOATHE ChCh. Never have I encountered such out and out sexism and racism. It's like an old boys club, or some weird country club where it's all about who you know and where you went to school - seriously one of the most common questions I got asked upon meeting new people in ChCh. It's a city that just has no soul. It's boring, and thoroughly meh. I'm much happier living in Palmy (9kn out actually lol) than ChCh.

They're both flat and there's nothing to do.

I've just seen you're rego date, so you may not understand what I'm referencing. Earlier this year a thread was started asking me to produce stats proving Christchurch had a bigger racism problem than the rest of the country because I said what you've said above this (admittedly I said it a little more....bluntly). Unfortunately such a survey hasn't been taken and so I was told that without proof I was wrong, despite living in the hell hole for 18 years and experiencing similar things to what you have mentioned above...

I must admit that as a stanuch ex-fighter I'd rather walk through cannons creek or flaxmere thn through chch city central at night. And I'm an ayran looking bonde but still find the chch young skinheads intimidating... they have that group mentality where they set ea other off but wd be easily torn apart if one on one

Just because you're poor doesn't mean you would want to live in the hell hole of the South Pacific.

Klan population at one point was estimated at roughly 4 million (or was it 6million?  Not sure) and that's just one white supremist group.  Get them altogether and they would be able to scrape 50 million if you add the closet racists to the pile.

I was both impressed and surprised by the number of Asian businesses in Christchurch.  I don't really care where I live if I have transport to leave.  I've either lived in or like a number of places that people have named the worst. 

this is a tricky discussion since most's people's dislike of chch seems based around supposed racism and as i'm not a person of any type of colour other than white with surfer tan tints I'm hard pressed to judge that angle.

As a chick there are places overseas I wdnt even visit. I'd end up in prison if jumped on a train in India and some guy grabbed my ass. I once ended up visiting the Soi Cowboy district of Bangkok (long story) during the day and man it was so incredibly scummy and the housing conditions so revolting round there that I can totally understand why a thai women might learn demeaning pingpong ball tricks to try and escape

But not to Christchurch though as they'd just end up in the Avon.

I met a cpl who were Bangkok born and bred. but another good thing about chch as opposed to cities like Bangkok is you dont choke on thick exhaust the minute you step out the door
