Proposed changes to drinks laws.

Back home, there is less of a drinking in the house culture and people prefer to go to the pub and then maybe onto a club or whatever. Saying that, Scotland is hardly the example you want to follow, but there is a real culture of drinking just to get drunk here and I don't know how you solve that. When something is so ingrained in culture, it is difficult to get rid of through legislation alone.

Just curious. Where's home for you?

Rather than changing the age, how about cracking down on these mini groups of people who are clearly under 18 drinking in town on Courtney place on a Saturday night trying to fight people? The police don't do shi* to these people since their too scared to take them on.

18-20s are just as bad in town clarke. Thats why im for the drinking age being higher. Itll make it harder (not impossible) for a younger group to get alcohol. i.e cant just ask a 7th former at school for some etc...

Its gotten to the point where it NEEDS to be done. They havent proven since the lowering of the age that they are responsible enough,surely that is clear. Any law change is always going to be unfair on someone steve-o,so thats not really an argument either.

The problem is big. I have heard it said that about 10% of NZers have a problem with drink. That's a massive proportion.

Isnt the question about purchase age? The Law Commission wasn't talking about the drinking age.

Law Commission summary says -

[quote]88 We therefore recommend returning the minimum purchase age for alcohol to
20 years with no exceptions.

89 We recommend it should be an offence to sell or supply alcohol on licensed
premises to anyone under the age of 20, even if they are accompanied by a parent
or guardian. It should also be an offence for anyone under the age of 20 to drink
or possess alcohol in any public place. It is already an offence for those under

I wouldn't mind seeing them trying 20 at off licence and 18 at on licence first. There are a lot of 18 year olds still at school and can buy alcohol to be consumed by younger mates at parties, yes it happened when the limit was 20 but probably not as easy as it is now, and if there is an easy alternative to drink at a licensed premises kids might do that.

Alcohol-probably responsible for as much misery and sh*te as guns if not more.

If I could go back in time to when I was about 13 and smack myself in the face with a cricket bat and say "ffs don't drink" I would do it.
