Those of us following English football in the early 1980's will remember Watford's legendary promotion run under Taylor from fourth division to first division in five years 1978-1982.

Capped by playing three friendlies straight after promotion to the first division against the All Whites in NZ in their preparation for the '82 World Cup finals.

We were lucky to see stars like a teenage John Barnes and Luther Blissett in the flesh.

Watford returned to England to finish second behind Liverpool in their first season in the top flight, with Blissett the league's top goalscorer. They made it to the third round of the '83-'84 UEFA Cup and were beaten finalist in the 1984 FA Cup Final..

Watford's veteran Scottish fullback Keith Pritchett liked it so much here in NZ that he immigrated in 1984 where he found success as player-coach of  Waitakere and went on to be All Whites manager 1996-97. Pritchett's son James, born in Watford shortly after the team returned from NZ, went on to play for NZ.

Former Christchurch United striker Richard Hill was signed by Graham Taylor from Northampton Town for a Fourth Division record fee of £258,000 in 1986 after scoring 33 goals in one season.

I have a picture of Keth Pritchett in a QPR Jersey.

Keith is 3rd from the right back row. The copy I have is autographed by Phil Parkes.

How the man should be remembered!

Villa v Wolves will be emotional this weekend. As will Watford's fixture.

Rose above the English press quite well tbh. Very dignified. One or two managers today could learn a thing or two from him.

RIP.

Three for me, and two for them.

Some touching tributes, clearly a well-liked and respected man, which will always trump any sense of underachievement surrounding his managerial career (Watford obviously excepted).

Marvellous show: the egg whisk, the flying helmet, the fallen Madonna with the big boobies...

I was in London in about 1987 and went and saw the Allo Allo stage show which featured the whole cast from the television show. I bought a badge that said "I have seen the fallen Madonna with the big boobies".

I also got highly flustered when Yvette and Helga both appeared in different scenes in lingerie. It was a different time

Their leader hasn't been making rainfall decisions in the last two days, I doubt they would get better in one to one negotiations.
