Cats killing billions of animals in the US

More support for Gareth...

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Humans kill animals. I think we should do one over china and create a no child policy.

Wow.

Does the SPCA really release stray cats back into urban environments?  If so does it do that for any other unwanted animal?

To paraphrase the SPCA guy, 'that is a complete fabrication, we don't release unwanted cats into the wild, we release unwanted cats into the city, which is completely different'.  LOL.

My English Cat loves the Wedding Present which is playing at full volume whilst I'm doing the washing up/cleaning the lounge. Even though he's from Lancashire!

Look, he is just putting forward current scientific evidence that shows domestic cats threaten the survival of native species of New Zealand:
If you don't agree with the findings, undertake your own scientific research to see if it can refute the claims - improve the current scientific understanding on the issue.

This argument has been made many times in the past (http://tvnz.co.nz/close-up/thursday-may-17-4892662/video?vid=4892861). Morgan is a bit more 'colourful' than others that have made this point in the past and his use of hyperbole has seen the issue get traction, hopefully resulting in reasoned debate.

Ok, what can be done to mitigate the negative affect domestic cats, and cats in general, have on New Zealand's native species?

Gareth is a social scientist at best.  His area of expertise is in the dark art of pseudo-science known as economics.
Between all the hyperbole I don't find his comments about moggies out of line (and I do like pussies - I used to own one in my student days.  Before I ran out of grant money and got really hungry...).  However I wouldn't trust Dr Gazza to splice my genes or accelerate my particles.

That's a totally legitimate position to hold: that we should not waist time, effort or money on protecting any species.

I don't hold that position.

But as Morgan points out Cats are cruel and unforgiving and my Lancaster Cat is completely "Shirest" and won't tolerate anyone born in Yorkshire. Even someone as spectacular as David Gedge. There is no way on Earth I could talk my cat into being anywhere near the Sanfransico Bathhouse on Saturday 23rd  to see the mighty The Wedding Present live, even though he loves their music.

Just come back  from the vets and read a good article. This zoologist based in the Hutt studied his cats hunting habits over 18 years and came to the conclusion that his cat actually benefited Native Bird life by keeping the rodent population down, the rodents do more damage than cats He also stated letting your cat out at night actually helped also as birds are not active but rodents are, increasing the likelihood that cats will hunt rodents.

Very small sample size. Other studies with larger sample sizes have come to different conclusions: http://sciblogs.co.nz/politecol/?tag=cat

Yeah my own experiences back his up however. My cats have bought in very few birds in but quickly wiped out the rabbit population and usually bring in mice and the odd rat.

I think the damage cats do would be more pronounced on rodent free reserves.

I see Morgan has been cat bothering again.

Fair point about if we got rid of cats what would happen to rodents from Celia. I guess we'd just have to live with tons of poison baits.

My cats hunt very little but when they do they bring everything back into the house. I'd say through observation my cats catch:

50% Skinks - 15 or so a year, sadly most I save which is bad as one of the buggers crawled into my hot water cylinder and another fried the circuit board in my burglar alarm costing me a small fortune, the bastards.

20% Assorted bugs.

20% Rodents, mostly mice, the odd rat - good works lads!

9.5% Assorted leaves, bits of string, ladies underwear, etc

0.5% Birds - that's a lot less than one bird a year. In statistics that's called fuck all.

My point? Morgan go and sort the fucking club out and stop messing with my cats that do a very valuable job for me. You don't advocate the removal of sheep or other working dogs so leave my cats alone.
