Another good source of cat/rat warfare is Robert E Howard's accounts from his childhood and includes his observations of the brutal life farm cats lead. I grew up near a farm and hung around a few others, (nothing like pretending farm machinery as a space ship*), and saw a few horrific cat deaths.


*Kids don't try this at home. You've all become so risk aversive that just looking at a combine harvester will result in you exploding.
