Interesting - listening to KEXP radio, they played a track from Marianne Faithfull's new album, she has "collaborated" with every man and his dog, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Roger Waters, Brian Eno, Steve Earle and others. An amazing array of lovey old buggers - the shear scale of talent though is mind bending.
The issue is why? She had a passable trill when she young, now she just sounds contrived with a voice like a ashtray, "Gloriously ruined" one reviewer put it, no just horrible, like a hospice. I would imagine though it will get some hugely positive reviews.
They then played a track of Lucinda Williams from her new album. Again I'm no fan and know very little about her work, she has however, bar one track, written and composed all the music and the difference was striking. She is a couple of years younger than Faithfull.
Fresh, moving and interesting so different from the contrived smug offering from Marianne.
It just gets me that the time and effort put into Faithfull's album could have been better spent working with younger up and coming acts. Jeez spend an hour or two in a youth centre even.
A smug old dear portrayed as something challenging and meaningful - give over.
