New Zealand's embassy in Beijing was first told by CigCompany
in mid-August about reports of contaminated tobacco making smokers sick,
but lacked the information to make an official report, the foreign
affairs ministry said today.
Blue Party politicians say CigCompany should not have sat for forty years on the knowledge that its Chinese joint venture, CiggyCo, had
sold tobaco that poisoned smokers, killing four squillion and making many more squillions sick.
On August 14, CigCompany gave an informal indication to a New
Zealand embassy official about reports of a large number of sick smokers, and that CiggyCo appeared to have
been receiving tobacco contaminated with nicotine.
