https://www.euronews.net/2011/12/26/israeli-ultra-orthodox-jews-harass-8-year-old-girl-over-dress/This is disgusting. Gender segregation advocated by ultra orthodox Jewish men in Isreal. It's not surprising that the West has not spoken up. We're all to quick to critisize Islam when it comes to the treatment of muslim women. when/if we critisize the Isreal/Jews we would be acused of being anti-semetic & Holocaust deniers. I wouldn't be surprised if this post gets censored.
In all fairness - this is very much a small group, whose actions have resulted in strong condemnation from all levels of society - including government and Rabbis. Arrests have been made, rallies held...The problem is the actions of extremists. They do not represent all of Judaism nor all of Israel (nor all haredi, for that matter). Just as the actions of radical Muslims do not represent all of Islam. Over-generalized, unfair criticism of ANY group based on the actions of a few is unfair. As for the West not speaking up - I've seen the spitting incident mentioned several times by non-Israeli, non-Jewish sources. You're certainly not the first Kiwi I've seen decrying this.I agree that the attempts to enforce haredi standards on non-haredi citizens are wrong. I also agree that Islam tends to be demonized too easily. However, by suggesting this Israel and/or Judaism isn't being criticized enough over this is both incorrect and itself a form of demonization. That's not, of course, to say you're anti-semitic (a term that gets thrown around too much, albeit also dismissed too readily) or a holocaust denier (yeah... this only really gets used against holocaust deniers, rather than any alleged Judeophobe). Just try to keep perspective of who are committing the wrongs here. Criticize the extremists, not the state that they live in.
Started to reply but couldn't seem to word it properly so stopped. Glad someone managed.
