The often blasé Kiwi attitude to H&S. Stuck in 1970s 'she'll be right mate' days.

60 Minutes feature on the White Island tragedy.

The way those poor tourists (mostly Australian) were let down by NZ, from the moment they signed up for the tour, to waiting 2.5 hours for Rescue helicopters to be sent to Island, post the eruption, is a national disgrace. Tourists coming to Aotearoa deserve to be cared and looked after.

Why the equipped rescue choppers couldn't at least fly out of Whakatane towards WI, and then make their own onboard decision on landing or not is just insane. After all they are trained to be rescue pilots. I bet many of them were quieting fuming, when told to stay grounded.

Sending uninformed tourists out to the Island when it was already at alert level 2, was just utter greed chasing the tourist dollar. A then a BS Govt review is dragged out for a year (why so long), that will no doubt just sweep a pile of shark under a carpet. These poor people deserve a hell of a lot more. Shame on you Jacinda, tourist operator, Royal Caribbean & St Johns.
